I’ve decided to post my Do-It-Yourself solution to the C500 / SMT5600 dust problem on my website. You can find it here:
http://www.digimission.com/?page_id=25
I’ve tested it so far for 2 months+ and I’m still dust free. When I got my phone new I had dust after only 1 week! I wanted to test it for a bit longer just to be sure it works before I post it but there seems to be a lot of concern and talk about the dust issue lately. Anyone have a broken phone for a torture test?!
The disassembly instructions are on my website as well. And the fix is very simple; the hardest part is opening the phone. Enjoy!

Hi specialized,
Nice job on your 'how to' site. I am a new SMT5600 owner and have not seen this dust issue yet. I am a jeans pocket cell phone person, so I suspect that this issue is waiting in my future. Any ideas or preventative advice for those that do not yet need to do surgery?

Anyone had any joy getting this tape in the UK? I can't find it anywhere, including staples.

You can try using a cell phone case for your SMT5600. Krussell Case and the Silicone Jacket are popular options.

WOW! My I-mate SP3 is now a dust free zone. Some tips -
I used a small flathead screwdriver instead of the T5 / T6 torx - worked a treat.
The double sided tape can be found in B&Q ( I "borrowed" some from my workplace)
I experienced no cosmetic damage, and I'm not patient! Just go for it, don't be scared. As long as you haven't got elephant fingers you'll be fine.
Thanks very very much, I'm a happy bunny now!

Hm I just can't open it!
I have take away the top black cover and I have taken away all 6 screws, but I can only open it at the top, until the Camera and the Volume-Button, but I can't go further down with my card...
What am I doing wrong?!

You may need to use a little more force to slide the card down. You should be able to slide the card all along the side of the phone. PM me if you need any further advice!

Specialised,
Your documentation looks great however I'm having the same issue. I've been trying to find the black tab inside the hole and I just can't seem to visualize where it's located inside there and how big it is. Am I supposed to push down towards the front face of the phone on the tab or down and forward towards the power button. Let me know if it's not too much bother. Thanks again.

You can try using a flash light to look through the hole to pinpoint the tabs. Its forward towards the power button.

my question is does anyone know where I can get a new housing for my 5600? It doesn't have to be a 5600 housing, it could be any version of this type of phone. I just wan't a new housing as in mine is kinda scratched up and such ( how I bought it
)
Thanks if anyone knows...

I believe eBay is your best bet; you can also take apart a dummy phone for the housing.

awesome, I actually searched ebay right after I posted that and bought one...woo
I plan on trying to get my 5600 replaced through Cingular first, so hopefully that will happen and I won't even have to use it but if not at least I have it...
And I just ordered one of the cradles from the link in your sig specialized...

Great guide! Just finished giving my c500 a clean up. Had a bit trouble separating the 2 halves but finally did it and got a bit puzzled looking for the 2 screws under the aerial. Turns out I never had the screws to start with, nice one HTC... Anyone know if the 2 at the bottom are the same length? I might move one so I have screws in opposite corners instead.

i get to step six, i have unscrewed my philips screw from the PCB but, i think i was too eager with my credit card bit as ive pulled the black orange fascia away from the grey chassis, these originally were glued together!
im pulling the pcb from the left and side and its not bringing the screen with it, its just the PCB, is this right? any more detailed tips after step 6?

It sounds like you have a loose LCD ribbon. Behind the LCD screen there is a connector for the ribbon. Flip up the dark grey tab on the connector to loosen the ribbon. Push the ribbon back in, close the tab to secure the ribbon.
If you choose to open your phone please do so carefully.

I'll add to the record of having a similar problem - only my screen went white without me ever taking it apart. I've had the phone for a month and a week which means my only option was to have Cingular send out a new phone. This wasn't an option since I had a plane flight the next day and needed a phone for my trip. After reading the above, I went for broke and took my phone apart and tried to reseat the connector. I powered the phone with it apart and still found a totally white screen. I tried reseating things a couple times and nothing worked. I then cried for a little bit and then reassembled the phone. With it fully assembled it powered up and is now working again! Not sure what happened, but I'm happy since it's working. Not sure if this will really help anyone, but someone might give what I did a try should they encounter the SMT5600 white screen of death.

I too have the same problem of the white screen, just like yours mine just went white one day. I have tried opening up my phone, but i dont know what the connecter is supposed to look like, if anyone could explain it in a little more detail that would be great.
