MPX200 - Hard reset / Original Orange firmware?

Hey,

I performed a hard reset on my phone in preparation for selling it on ebay; unfortunately it will now not get past the Orange splash screen, despite me trying to hard reset it again.

A couple of other topics have suggested flashing the phone with the original firmware; is this correct? If so, where can I get this firmware (and flashing tool) - a lot of searching this morning hasn't really yielded any information ;)

cheers

I would recommend repeating the hard reset procedure again until it works.

I had the same problem after buying a second hand MPx200. Took me a lot of tries but it worked eventually.

OK, will give that a try. Just to check I'm doing it right, hold down blue action button and hit power, then hit yes to 'Master reset?', correct?

Roughly how many times did you have to do it before your phone worked, out of interest?

Yep that's correct.

Well I lost count as it took me several days to get it right. I'd guess at 25 and I've heard other members taking a similar number of attempts.

The original Orange firmware for the phone is not available for download legally.

It can take a long time to start up once the hard reset has finished. How long are you leaving it before deciding it's "stuck"? If it's less than 30 minutes then you're not being patient enough! ;)

Just curious, perhaps someone with a contact at Microsoft can ask a few general questions, but if you have a rom embedded in hardware such as a phone, is the actual physical flash rom also your licence for the software? If so, and you own the hardware, are you not entitled to backup the software or hold a backup of the software even if the backup is made by circumventing the protection? So using this chaps problem as an example, wouldn't he be justified in obtaining the software to run on his hardware by whatever means as long as the software was identical to that originally provided?

I can understand the problems with hacked / illegal roms eg 2003 on an mpx200, but unless manufacturers / airtime providors provide firmware downloads on their own sites or supply a firmware on CD with the device at time of purchase then IMO an illegal download would be justified to recover a device that would otherwise be BER.

Any thoughts?

In most cases backing up software is a myth that a lot of people use to justify their actions (and ebay auctions).

Most EULA will not allow you to make a copy of the software.

The normal solution is to return the phone to a service center for repair

as they are licenced to do so.

But if you can boot the phone without signing / viewing any EULA how could they hold you to it anyway?....

All I can find with a quick google search for 'smartphone eula' is other people asking for the smartphone eula

Edit

I've found one in the motorola mpx 220 upgrade wizard, copy posted here.

You have to have the phone already though, else why would you download a firmware update for it, so again, you have possession + use of the original software on the phone without agreeing to an EULA.

/Edit

If I were to damage or lose my Win XP CD I would expect to be able to obtain the media again for a nominal fee but AFAIK only HTC will reflash phones, and even then it's at a high cost in comparison to the work they actually do.

At a local service centre I deal with ( JWE / Convergent in Pocklington ) who are authorised moto repair agents, can't flash my mpx220 to fix a ( minor, known bug) earpiece issue as they don't have the software but I can find a download of a foreign rom on the net and install at my own risk.....meanwhile at the same premises, a symbian smartphone that has f/w issues - £10 while you wait flash if out of warranty, free if within - which my unit was, and no quibbles afterwards about burning me the self extracting .exe to reflash others with similar issues - their charge is only for the labour componant, you're not paying for the newer software.

And take RiM - every firmware you could ever want for every device from every providor is on their site if you look hard enough - and there are more blackberry varients than there are smartphones if we include different service providors.

Handspring / palmone host their device's firmware online, so how difficult would it be for microsoft to host a central repository of firmware downloads for all ms smartphones?

I realise you could argue that as they are not the manufacturer of the devices they are not responsible for support ( but without reading the EULA for the phone who knows?) , but if you run windowsupdate from a dell you don't get redirected to dell.co.uk.

Oh well, wishful thinking over, back to reality eh?...
