Palm Tungsten and C500 - driving me crazy!

Ok...

so, I have a new C500. I have bluetooth working. I have GPRS working, I have synchs with lotus notes using onebridge (organised through work).

I can browse the web on the phone, it connects with GPRS.

I can use the phone as a modem for my laptop using USB link, that gives a GPRS modem OK.

So I have most of the settings...

But (and this is a big painful one for me!)

Palm Tungsten + C500 is a no-go.

There is no compatible phone (phone like update doesnt contain a driver for this phone). So, I have followed various instructions for Bluetooth Modem connect.

So I dial *99# using the palm network connection over bluetooth to modem (with the device I am correctly paired with over bluetooth). This dials (the two arrows appear in the bar on the phone) .. and it just sits there.. and nothing happens on the palm (it says signing on) for ever and then times out.

Over and over.

I've tried a lot of different settings (per various web sites, some in French that I managed to translate!).

Has *anyone* managed to get a palm to dialup a GPRS (or in fact any other number) using bluetooth? If so *how*?

Please please please.. if you can help I shall be a happy Smartphone user. Otherwise I will have to stop using it ;) (my palm connection is important to me).

Many thanks!

Well yes! I did it today after spending 15 mins on the phone with Orange Wirefree support (dial 156, then 4 & 2) - they were very good but you need your SPV and another phone for them to call you back on). I'm using a Tungsten T.

I will try to describe the settings (assuming you have paired the two devices):

In prefs - connection -select new - call it 'Orange GPRS'

CONNECT TO: PC

VIA: Bluetooth

DEVICE:

Then select 'details' & set speed to 57,600, flow ctl to automatic.

Press OK, OK, Done to get back to prefs.

prefs - network - new:

service - call it say 'orangeGPRS'

user name: user

password: pass

connection: Orange GPRS

Select details

Connection type: PPP

Idle timeout: Never

Query DNS: Checked

IP Address automatic: Checked,

Script (this is a bit tricky to follow - you are selecting the item on the left - Send, etc- from a drop down list and adding text on the right, where required):

Send: AT&F

Send CR

Send AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","orangeinternet"

Send

Send

Send CR

Send ATD*99#

Send CR

Wait for CONNECT

End

Press OK twice,

Press connect ------ and it worked for me. ;)

Screen should say initializing, signing on, established (from memory). Phone should show two horizontal arrows on the signal strenght indicator where the G for GPRS usually sits.

HTH & good luck...

Excellent! That worked. I am so glad you took the time to type that up for me, it's good to still be able to use the palm with gprs when I want to :D

It doesnt seem too good at persisting the link (it drops a bit too easily), but at least it works at all!

You're welcome - having got it working, I thought it would be useful to post the details. They're suppoed to be on the Orange web site but I couldn't find them.

It's early days yet but I haven't had any problems with link droppping - I did find that I couldn't connect at one stage but rebooting the phone sorted that out.

I am in a v. poor signal area and was using the Palm for half an hour or so last night without a problem..

Just to update this - the link works pretty well - but I do find that ocassionally it fails to work. Sometimes it's a phone problem (Pocket IE won't connect either) and restarting it or taking it in and out of flight mode sorts it out.

Other times I've had to delete the phone and rediscover it to get it to work again.

A bit inconvenient but streets ahaead of using the phone on it's own..

Now, has anyone managed to get dialer to work via Bluetooth?? It might just be an init string problem, but mine tries for a while and gives up with an error message

i'm tying to use these settings on my SPV c500 and a Tapwave Zodiac2 (Palm OS 5.?) - but the palm will not allow me use the ''my spv c500'' as my DEVICE when I select CONNECT TO: PC as it knows that the spv is not a PC but a phone.

I tried using all the other settings given but substituting PC for PHONE and MODEM but I cannot connect.

Can anyone help me?

TIA

Ok, it's takena year to get a response, but you need to

  1. make sure your c500 is in bluetooth Discoverable mode (not just 'on')
  2. on the palm choose CONNECT To: PHONE
  3. find the bluetooth device
  4. change back to CONNECT To: PC
You should then be able to find the phone, and also make it work.
