Using SPV as a IR modem for a Pocket PC

Anyone tried setting up the SPV as a modem for another Pocket PC (in my case a Jornada 545) using IR?

I know I can use the IR port from my laptop so I'm happy that the phone IR port is working, but I can't get a connection from the Pocket PC even through I've set up an IRDA modem.

Thanks

so far only over gprs and using

+cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet","",0,0

Tried that - I'm dialling *99# or *99***1# as per some of the documents I've seen around the web but no joy. There is a connection to the phone over IR since I can get it to call me by changing the number to my number but I can't get GPRS access

Tap on Start

Tap on settings

Tap on the connection icon

Tap on Dialing location tab

Tap on Dialing Patterns and make sure it has only the letter G in every field

Press Ok

Tap on the connection tab

Under the top drop down Menu Tap Modify

Tap on new

Give a name to the connection : i.e.

ORANGE GPRS

On the modem drop down menu select Generic IRDA

your network requires DNS, but they are not necessary.

Anyhow

Tap Advanced and then the Name Servers tab

Select “Use specific server address” (this will activate the grid)

Enter according to your network provider the correct settings:

Orange DNS 195.035.131.194

Alt DNS 195.035.131.195

Press next

Fill ONLY the telephone number field with *99#

Press Next

Untick the “Wait for dial tone” checkbox

On the extra init string enter

+cgdcont=1,"IP","orangeinternet","",0,0

Press Finish

Press Ok

Activate IRDA modem on the phone and align it with your PDA

press connect on the ipaq

if you want enter

username: orange

password: multimedia

put a tick to save the password

cross your fingers

press ok/connect

Thanks very much - I've finally managed to make a connection :D

It seems to have a tendency to drop out after a few minutes but

that might be just down to the fact I seem to be getting a low signal

at the minute.

The only thing I hadn't done was add the DNS settings - seems to handle this fine on my laptop, but obviously the jornada has a problem or two in this area.

Thanks again

Hi,

Been having problems, and it looked like a lack of init strings was the problem, so I tried it one last time, before adding them, and guess what? it worked fine.

This leaves me wondering, therefore, what init strings are for, what they do, and what problems I could run into by not having them??

Thanks.

that particular init string tells the modem to look for the access point on orangeinternet, and to automatically search for the IP address and connection speed.

the access point is important because that's where all the data you download when connected to the internet comes from.

withouth it, you shouldn't be able to maintain the connection open or you shouldn't be able to download anything.

on same handset it is possible to enter the apn on the phone.

unfortunately, afawk, when you enter that string on the phone it doesn't seem to like that much.

we got it to work that way as well but it never worked reliably or maybe we just failed to understand what's the key setting that makes it work
