Keylock M500

Errr ok - this might sound a bit n00bish to some of you, but I received my M500 on Saturday and have been battling trying to work out how on earth you are supposed to lock the keys on it.

I've found the "Button Lock" option and have that set to "Lock all buttons except Power Button" when the "device is off".

And I think I've turned off the device. A short press of the "power" button on the side seems to turn the device off completely (media player stops playing, etc..) and a long press just dims the screen.

However, in both of these states, if I hit the green "make a call" button twice, it dials the last number (currently just Orange customer services so it's free!).

Also, if I hit the "voice dialling" button, it'll start up the voice dialling app.

Is there anyway to stop all this?

I've set it up to ask for a password after 15 minutes of not being used - but there has to be a better solution - I hope!

OK - I've found the problem - or is it solution...?

It appears that if you have bluetooth running, the keylock does not work. However, with BT turned off, it works fine :/

Only found it this morning as I've had BT on all weekend, when connected to my PC

*sigh*

when i "lock all buttons except power button" it does just that... nothing else works at all.

EDIT: just checked this with bluetooth active and it is still totally locked

EDIT EDIT: ooh k, yes, it does do those things but it does them without switching the screen on. strange bug.... anyone know if the crops up with the jam?

Does the same on my JAM, if BT is off and i turn the device off, i can press any buttons and nothing happens, but if BT is on, i turn the device off, but the calender, call etc. buttons still work :?

Glad it's not just me then...

And yeah - I should've said about the screen still staying switched off - apologies about that!

Can't understand how something so obvious was missed during the testing for the OS (as that's where it would seem to be going by the fact that it's present in more than one brand of handset).

I found it within about 5 minutes of playing with the handset as keylocks are something that I just don't trust until I've proven to myself that they work. And especially as many people are likely to be driving with BT headsets and will want to shut the phone down as they don't want to make any calls, but will want to have it alive to answer incoming calls. Can just imagine the phone voice-dialling the first name it recognises from the radio

EDIT: Just wondering - does the same thing happen on an M2000 (for example) or is it limited to just these models? Anyone with an M2000 able to test this?

I have had a similar problem with mine (which I got yesterday).

I just assumed that you hit the powere button and that was key locked. By the sounds of it this ain't the case. I haven't seen anything in the manual about it either.

My other problem is that the last called on my phone doesn't seem to change. Its been stuck on teh sam name even though I've called other people since?... Any ideas why that happened.

Other then that i have no major problems. I haven't used a smart phone for a really really really long time so I am just trying to work things out with it.

Just out of interest do I need to unlock it so that certain applications can work on it?.....and how do I change the background and ring tones etc?

cheers

Afraid I still havent got it. Seems that no matter how I try to turn it off it still rings unless I actually remove the battery! Says in manual a long press to turn off phone and single press to turn off pda function. Both result in the phone still ringing!

you can't switch it off, not completely. it needs to stay active to keep from loosing data. if you set it to 'flight mode' then press the button on the side to switch it of, that will stop calls, thats the closest you can come to actually turning it off

Blimey! Guess I thought that with all that technology on board an on/off button wouldnt be that hard. But see what you mean and thanks for that.

Odd...

It's a definite problem for myself and for others :s

With Blue Tooth enabled, I make a short press of the "Power" button - the screen switches off and I would expect keys to be locked at this point.

However, if I press the green "Make a call" button twice, then the last number I called is dialled without the screen coming to life. Another short press of the power button turns the screen on with the dialler showing the call progress.

Does it every single time if Blue Tooth is enabled - 100% reproducible :s

Nope, can't get it to turn on to any press by any button other than power. Pushing green twice does nothing either. All this will BT on. I have ROM v1.03.

ROM Date: 01/06/05

*sigh* looks like Orange have done it again... Updated the software and managed to screw it up :s

Could it be that this is intended functionality?

It sounds like it only does all this if Bluetooth is enabled. Could this be in order to allow voice control and last number redial without turning the screen on, if a headset is connected?

Edit - Actually, I've just tried this on my M500 and it doesn't work. I turned on bluetooth, pressed the side button to turn the screen off, and then tried the voice button and the dial button (green phone). Neither do anything.

Have those that are having the problem executed the "trick" to prevent the Orange software being installed from the Extended Storage folder? I'm sure there are both bluetooth and keylock things in there... (eg: the action engine, bthusb_patch, autolock?)

Yeah, that pretty much answers my question Hax :)

The "trick": If you hard reset the device, walk through the calibration process, then soft reset before the installation process starts, you can avoid having all the Orange software installed. You can then opt to install various bits and bobs from the extended storage folder (for example PhonePad, Photo Contacts, etc).

At some point I must do a list of what each app does, unless someone beats me to it.

I keep seeing references to a "voice button" on the M500 - which one is it? Or have you allocated a button to the voice dial software?

EDIT - Never mind, I've found it - it's the Record button on the left hand edge. So how come it fires up Voice Dial, when it is clearly set to activate the Record software in the settings?

And another thing - anyone found out if you can remap the volume slider on the left to do the same thing a scroll wheel does on other Pocket PCs?

I have the same thing, and it's not just making a call either. If I turn the device off (short press - keylock, no screen, etc) I can press the contact button, turn it back on, and it's on the contacts page. It appears to disable the screen and nothing else on mine. Very worrying if I want to carry it in a pocket.

Also: I'm unable to remap the record button to anything other than voice dial. Is this just me or is it stuck on that for anybody else?

  • 2 weeks later...

I can confirm the same issue with my S100 Rom 1.11.00 WWE

Bluetooth on, press power button. While screen off press any other buttons and the screens are activated.

Works fine without the bluetooth enabled.

I rarely use bluetooth so did not come accross this sooner
