Although there is no official build, RealPlayer works great on SmartPhones. Videos look rubbish and the backlight doesn't stay on, but it works with audio very nicely.

Do not ask how to download streams here.  Google will help you find how to download streaming audio for offline use
It works a treat with audio files from the BBC, and that's one of the biggest collections of regularly updated realmedia.

I know its possible to convert to wma or mp3 but I'm too lazy for that

1) Go to this page on Real.com, fill in your details and choose the PocketPC version (the alternative being symbian)

2)  On the next page choose RealPlayer for Pocket PC 1.1 Preview Release, and you'll download RealOnePlayerPPC11PR.exe

3) Begin the install, but don't click next when the first screen appears

4) Go to Start->Run and type %TMP% and when you press enter, your temp folder will open

5) Find the subfolder called ~rnsetup which is where the install program will have decompressed itself.

6) Open the file REALPLAYER.CAB (my computer opens it in Winzip)

7) Use Winzip to extract all the files from the cab somewhere (e.g. c:\realplayertemp)

8) Rename the following files:
REALPL~1.002 -> RealPlayer.exe
000000gx.001 -> gx.dll
00gecko2.003 -> gecko2.dll
000sipro.007 -> sipro.dll
0000rv20.004 -> rv20.dll
0000rv30.005 -> rv30.dll
0000rv40.006 -> rv40.dll

9) Delete all the other files

10) Copy all those files that you renamed from c:\realplayertemp to the phone

11) Run RealPlayer.EXE on the phone, using SmartExplorer (or equivalent) and click yes to all the warnings.

In running the EXE it will associate .ra and .rm files so you'll be able to click on them and they'll open in realplayer in the future.
Test that you can open a .ra or .rm file in SmartExplorer or File Manager.

If you got an error message saying "file or url not found" follow these steps
  • Open up smartexplorer
  • go to File->Open->Manage File types...
  • scroll down to .ra if it is not on the list then you can add it by going to File->Open->Open With... choosing realplayer and Always open with this app
  • Menu->Edit file type
  • ensure that the "command to execute" is something like "\storage card\program files\real\realplayer.exe" "%1"
  • you need the quotes around the %1
  • do the same for .rm and .ram
[Update 270208]
Newer smartphones have the default rtsp handler associated with Windows Media Player so stations like this one won't open

Open the registry and go to
HKCR\rtsp\Shell\Open\Command
change the Default value from wmplayer to something like this
"\Storage Card\Program Files\real\RealPlayer.exe" %1

Top Tips
use FakeCursor or sphelper to control the buttons.

RealPlayer is a bit intolerant of the volume keys on the phone so try to set the volume. It is worst when listening to a live stream because when interrupted it resumes with the original volume.  Pushing the volume buttons with FakeCursor or sphelper works better..

Neither FakeCursor nor sphelper can drag the progress bar to reposition the time bar so i wrote this tool

smartphone friendly version of bbc's listen again pagel

hope this guide is of use to someone.

er...thanks

I too am a heavy user of TCPMP/betaplayer for all my mp3, wma and movies but I get an awful lot of stuff that I listen to from the various BBC radio websites.

Converting from ra to mp3 takes time and effort and you're always going to lose some quality by re-encoding.  I like to be able to download my files directly to my sd card and for them to just work without any extra messing about.

What did you try? What didn't work?
do you have a .ra or .rm file to test it with?
When you click on the .ra file in smartexplorer or file manager, what happens?

Dear sir,
I've tried your method, but it didn't work, too.
When I clicked on the .rm or .ra file, it hanged.
The screen shows the RealPlayer's picture.
But it didn't work at all.
Sometimes it shows "file or url not found" and sometimes it shows only
a black screen.
Could you tell us how to solve?
Thanks very much!

here's something to try to fix the for the "file or url not found" problem

Open up smartexplorer

go to File->Open->Manage File types...

scroll down to .ra

Menu->Edit file type

ensure that the "command to execute" is something like

"\storage card\program files\real\realplayer.exe" "%1"

you need the quotes around the %1

do the same for .rm

please let me know if that helps

Dear sir,
   Thanks. I added " " in %1. It worked.
But the screen was a little "shift".
I think maybe the .rm file I played was too large.
When I find some proper .rm files and play it well.
I'll report it again.

Hiya,
I do not find it very good for playing .rm files, the video always looks shifted, and the backlight does not stay on.
For audio files, it seems to have no problem (I have been using it a very long time)

glad I could help

I'm using version 2.0.2 of smartexplorer.  Go to the menu and then Edit->About SmartExplorer to find out what version you have.

If it doesn't work you could always just edit the registry:

1) Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ra and read the default value (mine says rafile)

2) Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\rafile(or whatever you read in step1)\Shell\Open\Command

3) Edit the Default entry

4) ensure that the value is something like "\storage card\program files\real\realplayer.exe" "%1"

5) do the same for .rm

I just downloaded the newest version of smart explorer, still no go, shows all blank when i go to manage file type. As for editing the registry, I have mobile registry editor but don't have any values like the ones you mentioned.

OK try this
  • select a .ra file in smartexplorer,
  • hit file->Open->Open With...
  • Menu->Add to list
  • browse to realplayer.exe
  • push done and come back to the Open With... screen
  • choose realplayer and push 5 (to always open with this app)
  • push open
  • The file type properties dialog opens
  • select the "command to execute" text and scroll to the end
  • add quotes around the %1 to make it "%1"
  • push Done

Hey!

I have installed just like it was said here, and it is ok! I mean, I have the files in my mobile, and I can even open the program in my mobile, but... it kind of freezes after it is opened. It doesn't work at all!
I am using a mpx220.

Any clue?
