Mike I won't be here to help if you *do* follow this advice, but I suspect you will get farther quicker if you post your existing settings so others can check them for you. Also there is usually a list of the required settings for the various GPRS stuff kicking about here or elsewhere...

Try searching! People love that. I don't, particularly.

settings repository is here

there's another smartphone based guide here- orange aren't so big they would use more than one set of settings, I doubt.

Also, you didn't exactly say what the problem was, or what you were doing to create it...? :)

Edit: PS found Scarborough quite pleasant!

Thanks for your reply. It has taken a long time to get back to you as i got married on saturday and it has been a mad week.

The settings that came on the device didnt work so i have followed the following proceedure off O's web site and also had the proceedure talked through by OCS.

Setting up the data account

On the handset, tap on Start and then Settings.

Tap on the Connections tab.

Tap on the Connections icon.

Tap on the Advanced tab.

Tap on Select Networks.

Under the first drop down box, tap on New…

In the Enter a name for these settings: field, enter Orange WAP GPRS

Tap on the Modem tab.

Tap on New…

In the Enter a name for the connection: field, enter Orange WAP GPRS

Tap on the Select a modem drop-down list and select Cellular Line (GPRS).

Tap on Next.

In the Access point name: field, enter orangewap

Tap on Next.

In the User name: field, enter . Otherwise leave this field blank.

In the Password: field, enter . Otherwise leave this field blank.

Tap on Finish.

Tap on the Proxy Settings tab.

Select the This network connects to the Internet option.

Select the This network uses a proxy sever to connect to the Internet option.

Tap on Advanced…

Under WAP, in the Server field, enter 192.168.071.035

Tap on ok four times.

Tap on x to close the Settings screen.

In the GPRS Section it says:

i am using PAP authentication and Class 10 slot but i'm not sure about all this as i have never seen it before. i've tried changing these settings but i always get the same message. "the answering modem has disconnected"

Can anyone help?

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike,

I've also had strange problems with gprs - it'll connect once after a reset or being disconnected from the network then doesn't connect again. I take it you've tried resets?

I've had the same problems with GPRS - the only way I found to get it working was a reset, but I don't want to do this everytime I want to use GPRS!!!

Has anybody got a M500 that works properly with GPRS?

Mine has been fine.. up until yesterday when I installed the WiFi drivers.

Since then I get occassional failures to connect, which seem to be cured by a Soft Reset

I haven't seen a pattern yet (I haven't been looking for one) but if I spot one I'll post

I've found switching flight mode on then off again makes the GPRS start working. Saves a reset.

there is a long thread about this running at XDA developers site... i haven't got the time to find it and post the link but it has loads of pages of various fixes and ROM bodges to overcome it but no 'proper' fix...

when i get home, i'll edit this post wth the link...unless someone beats me to it...

EDIT: here's the first page of a 9 pager going thru various attempts but i dont thinka rock solid answer has been found...

I've been having this problem too, and now I think about it, its only been happening since I installed my Safecom wifi card, but I can't be absolutely sure. I have found that I can keep connecting after a soft reset until I make a phone call. After that it wont connect. The animated gprs icon freezes then I get the same error message. Have other users with this problem got wifi?

I have had to do a hard reset 3 times now to get GPRS working again. I have found that if I do either of the following, GPRS no longer works:

- Gone into the GPRS settings but not actually changed anything!!

- Selected 'show task bar icon' in the GPRS monitoring options.

After I have done this, nothing I do including entering the correct settings gets the GPRS back (although haven't tried switching the 'flight mode' on and off) so for now am not going to even touch any GPRS menu.

I got the "answering modem not reponding" message at the weekend - of course is was the first occasion I really needed GPRS to download an email with directions! I'd done a hard reset/soft reset hack the day before just to see what happened. Then another hard reset to reload the orange software and a full restore from my desktop. I can't see why that would cause a problem but I guess it must have done.

In order to fix the GPRS I had to do a backup using the xbackup software on the M500, another hard reset and then a restore via xbackup. That seemed to work but it's not exactly convenient! I don't think this is an exclusive problem to the Orange version though - I've seen several posts about the Imate JAM which have the same problem.

Ah. Maybe there is more than one symptom.

I've had a failure to connect as well as the answering modem problem ... at different times obviously.

the answering modem problem only happened once but a single soft reset cured it after removing the wifi card.

Strangely, i've been using it more lately and haven't seen it for several days.

It does feel like a wifi problem, but maybe its related to how quickly you use gprs after removing the card?

i'm guessing here in case you didn't notice!

I looked at the xda-dev site thread on this, followed the instructions to remove caller ID and installed an older version of caller ID. So far its been fine. Seems to be a worldwide problem and affects all HTC magician and blue angel handsets.

When it affected mine, a soft reset sorted it until I made a phone call. I haven't had to hard reset this phone yet, it seems fairly stable....touch wood!

I had noticed that caller ID wasn't correctly ID'ing callers when I had the Gprs problem.

I have a problem with the GPRS on my M500. I can only connect once. If I want to re-use GPRS I have to either reboot the phone or turn on and off the Flight Mode.

This is a known bug that Orange are 'Working On'! :S

OK here's the fix for a M500 on Orange (no side effects afterwards and everything working fine)

1. Download the older version of caller-id from:

ftp://xda:[email protected]/Blue...ID_1.20_WWE.CAB

and transfer it over to your device. Any directory is OK. I used ActiveSync to put it into the My Documents folder.

2. Remove the file IA_CD-Startup.exe from \Windows\Startup on your device.

3. Rename iacontacts.dll to something else (e.g. old-iacontacts.dll). This file is in the \Windows directory of your device but is hidden. However you can rename it using your PC. Open Windows explorer, and navigate to Mobile Device>My PocketPC>Windows.

4. Rename displayCID.dll to something else (e.g. old-displayCID.dll). Access it via your PC the same as for the previous step.

5. Soft reset

6. Run the CAB file on the device - just tap on it.

7. Soft reset.

That should do it.

No CallerID here either, haven't had since Day 1 with my phone

However I haven't had this problem for AGES now, and I've been using GPRS/WiFi/GPRS extensively

I too was experiencing GPRS connection issues with my Orange m500.

Typically, it would work initially & then fail next time I wanted to connect until I power cycled the unit.

I changed my GPRS settings from PAP to CHAP & never looked back.

I don't know the dif between PAP & CHAP (insert own comment here!!!!), but can confirm that my CHAP is certainly working a treat now. :)
