Missed call icon for Unknown caller screwy

OK, this is hard to explain so bear with me

Our office numbers at work do not send their CallerID number, so they always appear as "Unknown".

When somebody from the office calls me and I reject or don't answer the call my M500 shows the little speech bubble on the top bar (which I think means there is a Voicemail and a missed call), but when I tap it I get the popup window that would show the callers name/number and it's just full of "boxes" and it disappears by itself after under a second.

I have to go into the phone app, look at the Call History, which then removes the "speech bubble" icon and the voicemail icon then shows.

Hard to explain so I've added some screenshots

Anyone know a way to stop this?

Maybe adding an Unknown caller contact or something?

Worst case I can turn off the notification, but I might miss calls then.

Have now discovered that this is happening even with known numbers

Still looking for an answer - I've got loads installed so Hard Reset isn't my favourite solution!

OK, this is odd, what seems to happen is

1) When the call gets rejected I get the missed call icon (A phone handset with an exclamation mark),

2) Then when the person leaves a message it gets replaced/covered with the voicemail indicator (A tape spool icon)

3) Then a few seconds later this gets replaced/covered with the speech bubble icon.

I've tried different settings in Sounds and Notifications, but I don't know any way to control these indicators.

Yeah, I get the same sort of thing happening. Don't have as much detail to provide as Chucky.egg, but when the speech bubble appears and I click it an expanded area flashes up and disappears straight away, not enough time to see what's in it.

Like Chucky says, going to Call History removes the speech bubble and replaces it with the Voicemail tape icon.

Strange behaviour indeed. Just wondering if its to do with not installing one of the Orange cab files after the Bigstorage hack.

Cheers

I just want to add that I have the excellent SPB Pocket Plus (like Chucky), but I can't see that causing a problem.

Ah, that's useful ... Thanks

I did the Hard/Soft Reset trick, not the BigStorage, but sounds like you're right - it's likely to be some Orange app that does it.

Still odd though. Is this the default behavior for WM2003SE?

Anyway... if I get time tomorrow I'll backup and try installing the other junk to see if something/combination fixes it.

The external roms contain patches for the os. This is why I don't mess with mine. If the experts have that much trouble putting together a decent rom what hope have we got?!

my S100 does kinda the same - not the funky number notification - the speech bubble when too many icons need to be displayed in the top bar...

tapping it does give a breakdown of the stuff needing attention but each icon does the right action when tapped.. Odd that the Orange ROM behaves differently - i'd have thought that action was further in the OS than what got affected by the operator conditioning...

I'm using the Jam (and on O2), and haven't used it for voice for a while, but IIRC the speach bubble when tapped would show something like - you have x missed calls, and x new text messages. The text message would be the O2 text saying you have a new voice mail message.

Could it be a problem related to Orange using the spool for new voicemail instead of a standard text?

Just a thought, HTH,

Pete.

Well, I reckon you guys are on to something. As Chucky says it is odd if this is the default WM2003SE behaviour but I can also believe that a patch is needed to make this work correctly.

I really don't have time to install and test the cab files I left out so I'd appreciate it if anyone has an idea to which it could be. And if you have any joy Chucky please let me know.

Cheers all.

OK, how about this then...

The attached screenshot is what I now get if the caller shows their number and leave a voicemail!

[edit]

This turns out to be the last part of a fairly long note attached to one of my contacts. NOT the contact who called me though.

....wacky stuff...... :|

I still get nothing except the dialogue panel which on my M500 disappears in flash. I may reload the original ROM at the weekend and see what happens then.

Cheers

I've put a call in to Orange and given them this URL (they won't give out an email address I can send screen shots to)

Hopefully will get some suggestions in the next couple of days

If this problem is caused by preventing the installation of extended rom files then I'd have to suggest it's of your own doing and I don't see Orange being able to help.

The extended rom was never meant to be optional!

No, you could well be right, but it's worth asking the question of them (I think)

The only way to prove it is to Hard Reset, reinstall everything I've got installed and see what happens. Trouble is that with the Extended_ROM and all my extra apps there probably won't be room left to load the phone app, let alone anything else.

The trouble is, in my admittedly limited experience, Orange don't always come back with a knowledgeable suggestion/solution/advice, and at the mere hint of any 3rd party apps they throw in the towel.

I'm hoping that PocketPC support is better than Smartphone support.

Just been reinstalling the Orange junk (forgot to take a backup first! doh! ) and that doesn't seem to have fixed it either.

Now I'm really confused.

OK, so I think it maybe to do with a Today screen plugin. I had the speech bubble appear again this evening and the first time I tapped it a bar below appeared with the message envelope and battery icons. After the first tap it didn't come back and I got the same dialogue panel which just disappeared in a flash.

I decided to open the Notes application and then tap the speech bubble and would you believe it the bar reappeared showing the message envelope and battery icons.

So, when the M500 is not on the Today screen the speech bubble functions correctly (I think!). I have SPB GPRS Monitor, SPB Pocket Plus and SBSH PocketWeather plugins installed.

I'd add that this minor problem is a small price to pay for the extra space gained from the BigStorage hack. Saying that I'd like to get it sorted. If I get the chance this weekend I'll install all the cabs from the Extended ROM and see what happens.

Cheers

I was about to post that I have a theory, but I'll check Funster's idea too...

I'm using Spb PocketPlus, Spb Diary, Spb GPRS Monitor v2.

My theory was that it's the IA CAller ID app, which won't install properly because the iacontacts.dll is always in use (even in Safe Mode).

Managed to install Caller ID and that hasn't fixed it either.

To install Caller ID without installing the whole External_ROM you need to rename:

\Windows\iacontacts.dll

\Windows\displaycid.dll

\Windows\ContactsSDK.dll

Then run the CAB file

So, the only parts of the ROM I'm not loading are:

Delete_vdisk_shortcut.WWE.sa.CAB

CAB-ArcsoftMMS-2.0.0.20-Magician-Generic-ENU-27Dec04.CAB

CV2.41.386_WWE.CAB

JMM101257_WWE_1004.CAB

Fonix2.0_UKEnglish0907_09282004.sa.CAB

OrangeUK_Help_102804.sa.CAB

OrangeUK_Add_Programs.sa.CAB

I've got a backup now, so when I get chance I'll have a go with the MMS and the Orange CABs and see what happens.

Still no word from Orange themselves. Maybe their reading this and thinking "He messed it up, let him fix it", or perhaps "haven't got a clue what's doing this, lets see if they can work it out for us!"

OK, I've not had time to try other combinations of installation options, but I might still have a go at a "normal" Hard Reset just to check the problem hasn't been there all along.

For now I've setup a macro in Vito Button Mapper (which is neat BTW) which opens and closes Call History to clear the indicators. So all I have to do is press the Green button to open the Phone app, then press the Contacts button to open and close Call History.

It's not perfect, but it's good enough for now.

Still no word from Orange either.

Or you could also press Green button to get the phone app, then press Up on the pad to get Call History and finally the Red button to get back to the home screen. No macros, just standard behaviour.

On another note Chucky.egg, not had a chance to hard reset yet, maybe this weekend. I can't understand why others don't have our problem :?:

Cheers
