K-Jam - Try before I buy

Can anyone tell me if there is any shop in the UK that will carry the Wizard?

Just seems to much of a leap of faith to buy it over the internet without even holding it in my hands first.

I know the dimensions are the same as the Jam, but thicker.

It definitely seems quite a bit thicker than the C500 I currently have, so I'd hate to cart around a 'brick' in my pocket.

Don't know of any shops I'm afraid. In practice you should check out an MDA Compact/Imate Jam. Because that's the dimensions (excluding width) of the K-Jam. If you decide it's too big then you DEFINATELY won't get on with the K-Jam which is quite a bit thicker.

If you consider 5mm to be quite a bit, Pondrew, that is :o :(

Expansys have a 21 day return policy (just don't open the software or you get a 25% return restocking fee). I'm doing that.

If I don't like it I'll return it. But I think I'm going to want to keep it :( :o

Like ddieter I would prefer to go into a shop and handle the unit. I don't want to rely on a return policy of a website.

I went to an Orange and O2 shop in Central London yesterday and neither of them had any on show. I did not ask as I didn't want to wait around and made an assumption of the quality of answer I would have received.

Neither of their brochures has the Wizard/K Jam in but they did have the Universal/JasJar in both.

Look forward to hearing about any sightings.

Selfridges here in Manchester had the JasJar version of the Universal in quite soon after imate released it.

In the basement near MicroAnvika they have a good range of windows mobiles sim free (ie v v expensive - must be for the footballers who shop there!). They probably have them in London and Brum too.

I'll keep checking if they get the K-JAM in stock, because I want to have a play too, and post again when it is.

Might go down the expansys route myself unless orange announce it is imminent - my C500's on its last legs and I've enjoyed playing with a M2000 from work but thats just a bit too big

I just had a go on it in Tottenham Court Road - I must say it's very nice. Build quality seems excellent. The keyboard slide is nice and stiff and doesn't feel like it's going to come apart ever. One-handed operation is definitely a possibility. The chap there said Skype worked no problem at all.

If I were to make one criticism I would say I think I'm faster on the T9 popup keyboard than on the real thing. The buttons are quite stiff so you have to press rather than tap. And you have to use your thumbs really, unless you place it on a surface. Problem with putting it on a surface is that it wobbles slightly because the weight isn't all on the keyboard side.

Been to Selfridges in Manchester and they have indeed got them in - fresh today!

They let me have a play - must look moneyed today as there 500gbp sim free!

I'm sold, it has a lovely feel, light yet solid - auto screen twist is cool.

Come on orange - the m600 will be a killer device!

Went down to C&A and had a play with the K-Jam.

I don't know what you guys are talking about...it is noticably thicker!

We're talking like Sony P800 thick!

I just don't think its worth it. Phones should be getting smaller, not bigger.

I think I may hold out for the HTC Athena. Wi-fi, 416Mhz processor, 2 mp camera with real strobe flash all this and more slim than the Jam.

Not quite. According to my info the HTC Athena is the same thickness as the Jam, just not as long.

i have to agree with tigernet on this one, i do not think its that thick at all, the k-jam is a very well made, well considered device, I think it is the best htc phone i have had and i have had a couple of them.

Much better than the jam, also i think the thickness helps you grip it better, as i found the jam can slip from your hand. but find the k-jam does not etc

That's great to hear your 'hands on' opinion. I have a couple of other questions based on previous niggles with the original JAM.

1. When you receive a text message does it actually say the name of contact (if they are in your address book) instead of just giving the number?

2. Any problems with the K-Jam sending multiple copies of texts instead of one?

3. Is the GPRS connection stable? I seem to remember with the JAM that some had problems with losing GPRS and also not being able to reconnect without a soft/hard reset.

Many thanks for taking the time to answer these!

1. Lets me know the name as well as number.

2. No issues with multiple texts (but I didn't have this on the Jam either)

3. Have had no GPRS connection issues

Cheers

Hi Nick,

I'm in Bedford - apologies if i've posted in the wrong area, just getting excited about the possibility of a new phone - my C500 contract ran out a couple of weeks ago and I've got a PAC number burning a whole in my pocket :o

Dave.
