Guest dazzaling69 Posted October 11, 2005 Report Share Posted October 11, 2005 Hi, I have an MPX220, which is not a great phone, IMHO. I'm on O2, the phone is unlocked and has (had?) firmware 1.28. I attempted a firmware upgrade recently using the Motorola upgrade tool with the modified systeminfo.xml that fools the update wizard into thinking the phone is a US cingular phone. It downloaded all the files and set about flashing the latest official ROM 1.43. The first time I tried it the upgrade tool reported DL FAIL: Firmware Stage ,0x04004 error and had to be cancelled. I disconnected the phone, put the battery back in and the phone booted up normally. The second time I tried it exactly the same thing happened, except the phone refused to boot when the battery was put back in. Obviously I've killed something in the firmware, but can anyone tell me how to get it back? I imagine Motorola won't be excited about fixing it given that the damage was self-inflicted. Dazza. It tells me the upgrade has failed and suggests I 're-upgrade' the phone or contact my phone provider. Something is good and dead. Anyone have any other suggestions? When the battery is out, it is found in modems in Device Manager as a Smartphone 2002 Wireless USB modem. If I unplug it it goes. If I plug it back in it's recognised. I hope that's good news! When the battery is in I unplugged it and it disappeared from Device Manager, as you'd expect, but when I plugged it in again and it comes up with USB device not recognised in the system tray. Perhaps I could assign the driver manually? I tried the firmware upgrade again with the battery out and the Device Manager showing the modem there but it failed again. Install the smartfon driver while phone is off (found in this forum somewhere) 3. remove battery - IMPORTANT 4. run the offline utility 5. select the firmware you want 6. plug the cable back and leave the phone in a steady place so that the cable stays still - you may get the error messages because the cable pins do not make good contact with the phone - IMPORTANT 7. follow the on screen instructions to upgrade. During this process, the update utility requires you to Remove battery!! Also, take away any memory card you may have and the SIM card as well. The step it gets stuck on is step 3 'Detecting Mobile Communication'. It tries that for a few seconds and then says Bad News! and tells me to try re-upgrading my phone. It's obviously detecting the phone and installing the right driver but the upgrade tool doesn't work. I'm using upgrade software 1.85. I'm using the 1.49 ROM from there as well. I managed to get generic upgrade 1.47 to complete by following the above. However, now the phone doesn't boot, nor does it get recognised by Windows. The mystery deepens. Any advice? Dazza. PS. Guest WxGuy1 Posted November 5, 2005 Report Share Posted November 5, 2005 Any luck on this? My MPx220 is on Cingular, and stuck on ROM 1.30... Neither the online nor offline upgraders work. I'm using the correct drivers, and I can tether and Activesync just fine. When I do the offline upgrader, I get the exact same message as the original poster -- it sticks on "Detecting Mobile Communication", then gives me an error ("Bad News..."). When using the online upgrader, I get the exact same error message on the "Applying Updates" screen -- "DL Fail: Firmware stage ,0x4004". I find it odd that the two of us are having the exact same problem. I've tried all four USB ports on my laptop (Dell I6000). I run vanilla IE and Firefox, no toolbars installed. I've emailed Moto about this several days ago, but haven't received a response yet ("respond within 24-hours" my butt)...
