Screen dim/black when using some apps

Hi all,

I guess you could say I'm here because I have a problem.

I've done a fair bit of reading and only managed to come up with a couple of vague references to a similar problem.

It has occurred with the original 2002 OS and also with the newer 2003 v3.70.12.

Examples of the programs (on 2002) include betaplayer (before it became TCPMP), gnuboy, and a tennis game demo that came with the phone (on the cd).

Examples on 2003 include the newest ver of TCPMP, and also Pocket TV.

I will give the TCPMP example:

When I start the app, the screen goes very dark/dim - if i tilt the LCD then I can just make out the button labels at the bottom of the screen etc.

So I click on the left button and *bang* the screen comes back to full brightness. Then as soon as I close the menu, the screen goes back to being dim again.

No matter what brightness and contrast settings I use, TCPMP always starts with the dark screen - even if I set brightness and contrast up quite high.

Even with high brightness and contrast, as the video plays the screen goes dim again.

Sometimes the brightness comes back, sometimes not. Sometimes when I hit the hotkey I assigned to turn the screen on and off (twice), it fixes itself. Sometimes it will be a few minutes before it happens again, sometimes straight away.

Brightness and contrast effect the problem but unless I'm stupid, I can't get the problem solved just by adjusting these settings.

I have played with a few other settings also but nothing I've touched has had any real impact except adjusting the colour and brightness in TCPMP settings - and obviously that doesn't help at all for other programs.

I've had the phone for nearly 12 months and it did this at the beginning but I didn't have a big SD card to put videos on and I rarely play games so I didn't do anything about it. Now I do have a big SD card and I want to get this working!

Please help! This is driving me nuts!

Thanks and congrats on the great community here. :)

I've had a similar problem. Your backlight is turning off on you. This is only a workaround, not a solution, but you might want to try this: go to the power settings, and set it so the screen and backlight never time out. It should solve the issue you're having. Only problem is that it means your screen will NEVER turn off when you leave it open, so it's strictly a temporary fix.

EDIT: Removed the quote because it was huge and unnecessary.
