Anyone running blackberry connect on mpx220?

A year or two after being announced Vodacom SA has started shipping mpx220's with RIM's blackberry connect on the bundled mini SD to install ( just going through my emails from RIM looking for something and spotted it...) so has anyone around here tried it? According to the info I had, the cab file should be available to download from their site but the link seems broken ( and yet the S.E stuff downloads OK. Damn you, symbian!)

Some tw@ is even selling it on ebay GRRRRRRRR.

Almost tempted to get a collegue to buy one in SA and clone the mini sd for me. The install deletes the .cab file according to the instructions so what do you do if you hard reset? Download it from the website? I've already emailed them but why don't you as well?...

Richard

EDIT - it's a cab in the phone's firmware that deletes after install, not on the mini sd, according to the documentation on vodacom's site.

Response from Motorola South Africa ;)

Thank you for your email regarding the Motorola MPX220. The Blackberry Connect Client software is not available for download nor is it available for public distribution. You will need to go into a Vodacareshop in order for the Blackberry Connect Client to be loaded onto your phone.

For further information please do not hesitate to contact us on the number below or on the email address.

Still, if someone could get their hands on a Vodacom SA MPx220 that has NOT had the cab installed yet, it could be copied to a miniSD card, and then posted. The file name in the Storage root folder is:

BBConnect_Motorola_Smartphone_BB_English_2.0.1.33.cab

If someone can get their hands on a Vodacom SA MPx220, please download that file to external card BEFORE installing, that would be great!

I second that request. I have a Motorola mpx220 in Canada and I am dying to get BlackBerry Connect working on my phone.

Please post the .cab file for download.

Thanks!

I second that request.

2 things:

Firstly, I'm yet to hear of anyone who's actually got an mpx220 running blackberry connect ( and I'm a BES admin and a member of many BES webgroups), let alone someone with the ability to extract an autodeleting cab file before they install it - a bit tricky methinks. Yet vodacom provides symbian downloads. s'not fair :-(

Secondly, this isn't the place to ask for a download as anything copyrighted will get removed by a mod - there are plenty of other forums slightly more specialist / technical than this one where people are also looking, and nothing's turned up on those.....yet. You could always pop to S.A and get vodacom to flash your phone.

edit - you're in Canada! Go round RIM's offices and ask nicely :)

From the documentation it's a cab file in the firmware not on an SD.

If you extract it don't post it here- there are other forums happier hosting the file.

Has anyone tried the blackberry on mpx220 with Rogers in Canada?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I am on Rogers in Canada with an mpx220. I just downloaded the .cab file and have installed it. Now I just have to get the email working. Currently it isn't. Either I need to talk with my IT manager or my internet connection is not working on the phone.

For the person who has the mpx on Rogers in Canada, do you know the settings to activate internet connectivity?

BTW, thanks for linking to the .cab file. This will be great if I can get it to work!

Well, I installed it, but I still haven't got it working. Make sure you change your homeview so it uses a BBerry enabled screen or you won't see any clues to status on the home screen. At any rate, I got it installed, and arrange with my local IT BBerry staff to assist. They generated a new PIN for me(as the old one was tied to my BBerry 8700), and it seemed to go well. The service books have downloaded to the phone correctly(via the docking station and Activesync 4.1), and it shows the service as RUNNING. Here's the downside: While I can see the correct PIN that starts in 6Fxxxxx, in the IP field below it says NO CONNECTION. When I first installed it, but had NOT changed the PIN yet(which happened when I first tried to configure it with the BBerry Activesync 2.0 software) it showed an IP address. I have stopped and restarted the service from the MPx220 BB Connect menu, uninstalled the service and reinstalled, and I never get an IP again. It pulled down my company policy as well, no issues there, but that was via Activesync again. The only connection I could select was called BlackBerry, and it's connection details were:

Blackberry

APN: blackberry.net

Username: <blank>

Password: <blank>

IP: 206.51.26.189

Remote Port: 19781

Local Port: 19780

Now, there was one interesting detail that happened on the home screen. When I remembered to load the BBerry Connection homescreen for WM Smartphone, I noticed that in the Blackberry Status line area it said:

BlackBerry: Blocked

I tried clicking on the entry and going to the BlackBerry Settings area, and clicked on the option, REGISTER NOW.

When I did this it would change for a few seconds and say:

BlackBerry: NETWORK AVAILABLE, and the small G symbol would come on by the signal bar, which indicates a connection to the GPRS network.

However, after a few seconds, it would change back to saying:

BLACKBERRY: NOT CONNECTED

It stays stuck at NOT CONNECTED no matter what I do(power cycle, start/stop service, etc)

I think we are back to the old problem of only certain locations are allowed to connect from for particular PIN's or BlackBerry Connect clients, and RIM's servers are detecting that this is NOT a South African MPx220, and I am not connecting from the South African Vodacom network. It's from a SIM that is already configured for BBerry Corporate Exchange email of course. Any Blackberry admins or enthusiasts out there that have any ideas to try now?

Exact same problem. The BB ent server looks fine it updated the device/mailbox information via the desktop software.

When restarting or registering it connects to bb establishes a secure connection then terminates leaving it in an unconnected state or blocked.

I believe it is being blocked as suggested. I might just call and ask as I am a paying customer but I dont know how far I will get. There are other BB connect devices (siemens) that I have had working on our US bb server without any special changes.

I must say that I find it very interesting that your pin starts with the same two characters as my pin. can you post the last two characters?

Let me know how that works out. I was told that almost all Windows Mobile BB Connections start with 62. Mine ends in 61, but I still wonder if they are blocking these PIN's from outside of South Africa. Another person on the board said that no, it was a problem with the firmware of our MPx220's being too "new" and we should revert to older versions, as they had it working with a P910, upgraded to a newer firmware, and it stopped working. Then, the only way it started working again was when BBerry released an updated BB Connect client version months later. I don't know if this is our issue, but food for thought.......

Fuller 6 have you had any success with getting your BB connect to work? Please let us know..... No success on my end, but my BES admin says he thinks it's a block on the PIN on USA networks. I've tried calling RIM, but their hold times have been sick so far!! I've waited as long as two hours, then hung up. Let me know how your hunt goes. FYI, I read at XDA-Developers.com that some people hacked the IP address in the BB Connect client to change from x.x.x.189 to x.x.x.192 or something similar, and then it worked. I want this to work, but frankly if that is necessary, I have to admit I don't know how to hex edit cab files or dlls. Anyone here know how to do that?

Yep I came to the same conclusion. I was able to get tmobile to register my pin and imei on there network but still nothing. I then got back in contact with tmo and had them proxy a call to rim and the answer was a simple not supported in the us.

which would make sence that it is on the RIM end since the phone indicates that it a tunnel is established then disconnected.

I can look into the suggested hack.

this is really stupid. It is not like we are not paying customers

OK, someone is mistaken here then. I spent the better part of 4hrs on hold with RIM and Tmobile last week, and came away from RIM stating that they do NOT block BlackBerry Connect PINs from the USA(or at least the rep I spoke with) on this client. He said that the Wireless transport was not set up correctly by T-mobile, and that THIS was the issue, not blocked PINs on RIM's network, and then transferred me back to T-mobile. T-mobile said thay showed my PIN(which is now the BlackBerry Connect one that starts with a 6F) number associated with my old Blackberry 7100 IMEI number(I'm trying to move away from this to BB Connect), and that it would have to be associated with my MPx220 IMEI number manually. Here's the catch, they said that they spoke with 2nd level engineering, and they will NOT manually update the IMEI information with that PIN, as it's not Tmobile provided hardware or software(well they are right, they never released the MPx220, OR a BlackBerry Connect client), and that's as far as it goes, according to the rep who was talking back and forth. How did you get Tmobile to register your PIN and IMEI on their network??? Are you sure you are using a BES Exchange server, and not the Blackberry web client? I would like to try manually registering my IMEI with my BB PIN at least. The reason, at least RIM says this, that it shows a tunnel as established is due to it getting through to RIM, but having the wrong phone IMEI associated with the valid BB Connect PIN. At least this is what RIM says. Let me know how you got non-Tmo MPx220 IMEI to be registered with your BlackBerry PIN(not just the IMEI with your phone number/SIM, that's pretty easy), and I'll try that out. As for how they hacked the PPC version of the BB Connect client, I'll have to comb through XDA-Developers.com and find it again, as their search function does suck, I so agree.

I found the article and it is not working. it is the bbregistrationinfo.dll.

Yes I was able to have tmo update my pin/imei information. it was the TMO enterprise BB support team. They did it no questions asked. I can call back and verify that this actually happened. Yes I am an exchange 2003 BB enterprise customer
