Ok, I purchased an SDA today...it's my first smartphone. Probably trading in for the MDA when that comes out.

Anyway...

One problem I noticed, some games that take up the whole screen...doom/quake for instance...I can't close out of them sometimes...I can press every single button and nothing happens, I see stuff flashing through the game but I can't do anything so I have to take the battery out. Any way to fix that?

Also how can I code or set up my own today screen? I'd like easy access to the instant messages and texts...don't need the appointments crap up there.

How can I install a clean copy of windows mobile 5 without all that tmobile branding?

Since I'm smartaccess I can't get the unlimited internet access. So I'm stuck with t-zones which means no internet explorer. Is there some settings I can use to bypass this restriction?

Thanks.

I bought one yesterday as well. For tzones, if you check around you can find proxy settings you can add to your phone to enable you to view pages or you can set up your own proxy server to bypass there limitations

I bought an iMate K-Jam (same as t-mobile MDA) about 2 weeks ago and already sold it. What a pain. I just ordered an SDA from t-mobile (same as iMate SP5m) through their upgrade program for $139. I have 2 iMate SP3's, and want to add wifi, which the SDA has.

Yeah I just swapped my SDA out for an MDA yesterday. I don't like it. The touchscreen and keyboard are nice, but the screen isn't as purdy and the phone is wayyy too bulky for my tastes. I either have to have a pocket full or have a brick clipped to the side of my pants, no thanks I'm taking it back for the sda lol.

Could I get some more information on setting up a proxy? I found some proxies online and set used it with the tmobile gprs connection but it still doesn't load the page, could you explain it a little better?

Thanks

I've had my SDA (in the U.S.) for a week now, and it's had good moments and bad moments.

After finally getting it set up to use the internet with GPRS (I have the $29 unlimited plan) with internet2.voicestream.com, I can only connect once and then if I disconnect it won't reconnect unless I turn the phone off and back on again. MSN Hotmail is extremely flakey, and it won't connect about 70% of the time. T-Mobile seems to know about the problem but does not have a fix for it. It's definitely a pain.

Otherwise, things work fine with WiFi, and the phone part is great. I'd really like OS X iSync capability, but I have gotten it up and running as a GPRS/bluetooth modem with OS X (albeit with the same problem as above -- I have to turn the phone off/on again in order to connect).

I also got my SDA from T-Mobile last week through the uprade program.

I asked if they had EDGE coverage in my area (West Palm Beach) and they said no, only in Miami. However, EDGE works fine in my area (can't believe those CS people).

Over the weekend I drove up to St. Augustine (near Jacksonville) and had high-speed EDGE the whole time. I guess T-Mobile has rolled out EDGE to just about every market or somehow it's roaming on someone else's EDGE network.

The SDA has excellent signal reception. EDGE support is great; I've seen speeds up to 200Kbs. The connection speed seems to fluctuate between fast and slow but overall it is MUCH faster than GPRS on their network.

I've already reprogrammed the annoying t-zones button to launch my app.

I worry that it has the same crappy joystick that my C550 has (which is not fully functional after only a few months of light usage).

I had been considering getting the MDA also, but from all of the things I'm reading, I will not bother with it (size + problems).

Overall I am extremely happy with the SDA and especially with T-Mobile's EDGE support which I'm using through their $4.99 T-Zones plan.

Thanks for the info. Two questions:

1) I assume you aren't having a problem with accessing the internet via GPRS/EDGE by having to switch the phone off and then on again each time you want to connect?

2) You have the T-Zones $4.99 plan...I thought T-Mobile closed the hole whereby you can connect to the internet with that plan? I guess not...

tofergregg,

I'm not having any issues with having to power up/dn the phone. I turn it on at the start of the day and turn it off at night. I use pop mail and web surfing throughout the day without any connectivity issues. On my old C550 I used to have to kill the inbox application sometimes to get it to reconnect, but it seems that the WM5 version of inbox is fixed.

POP email is supported on the $4.99 plan and I use the T-Mobile proxy server (documented somewhere) to surf the web.

lol well...again I'd like to ask for more information on surfing the internet with t-zones...where can I get information on the proxy? Thanks a lot.

I'm having a tough time deciding between the SDA and MDA now... I love the size of the SDA but I like the extra features of the MDA... tough decision

Here's the info I used to get GPRS/EDGE working on the $5 T-Zones plan. I don't remember where this came from (I'd give credit if I could remember).

T-Mobile GPRS setup

-------------------

Access Point - wap.voicestream.com, IP=0.0.0.0

outgoing mail: myemail.t-mobile.com

T-Mobile USA

GPRS Connections

Description: T-Zones GPRS

Connects to: The Interent

Access point: wap.voicestream.com

User name:

Password:

Primary DNS: 216.155.165.50

Secondary DNS:

IP address:

Proxy Connections

Description: T-Zones Proxy

Connects from: The Internet

Connects to: WAP Network

Proxy (name:port): 216.155.165.50:8080

Type: HTTP

User name:

Password:

Make sure that no other settings have been entered in each of the respected sections, only have T-Zones GPRS settings in the GPRS Connections section, and T-Zones Proxy in the Proxy Connections section, that's it. Apparently to many settings fouls everything up.

Also pay close attention to the Secondary DNS entry of the GPRS Connections, no it's not a mistake, and I didn't forget to enter in an address, you want to leave it BLANK, just like the User name, Password, and IP address.

Now set all the connections to Automatic. If the Work Connection or the Secure WAP Connection or both say None Available, you OK, don't worry about those two, but Internet and WAP connections should both be set to Automatic.

The last thing you will want to do is configure Internet Explorer on your Smartphone.

Go to: Internet Explorer - Menu - Options - Connections

-Make sure there is NO check mark in the box to Automatically Detect Settings.

-Select Network : WAP Network

Thanks a lot, I'm putting in the settings now...well putting them in my MDA which will most likely be traded back in for an SDA again lol.

Ok, I have three questions about the SDA

1. How did you re-program the pink Tmobile button on the SDA?

2. What is the Tmobile upgrade program and how do you qualify for the $139 price?

3. What are the steps in syncing it with isync on my mac? Right now I'm using it to sync with my pc but would love to sync it with my mac.

Thanks.

1) The pink T-Mobile button is controlled by the hidden file:

\Windows\Short_AP1.lnk

This file is visible if you "Explore" the SDA from ActiveSync.

Edit it with Notepad to run whatever program or web page you want.

2) I had to extend my contract 2 years to get a $249 - $50 MIR price. I'm not sure how to get the $139 price.

3) I'm not a MAC user, so I can't help you there.

When you click on the EXPLORE button on the Activesync window, double-click on "My Windows Mobile-Based Device" and you'll see the file structure of your phone. In that directory (root) you'll see "Windows". Double-click on "Windows" and scroll down to the "S's" and you'll see Short_AP1.

freemz,

Try right clicking on the file, click Properties and then de-select the hidden and read-only flags.

OK, are you ready for this? I explore my SDA and then I double click on "My Windows Mobile-Based Device" and these are the only directories in it:

Databases

Application Data

CommMgr

Dochive

Docprof

Documents and Settings

MAPI

My Documents

Program Files

and a file that is called: pim.vol

I don't see a "windows" folder at all. What am I doing wrong?

Pete,

I don't understand why you're seeing something different from me. On my machine, I see all of the same directories that you do, plus these:

Storage Card (my miniSD card)

Temp

Windows

Are you running ActiveSync 4.1? Are you using the USA T-Mobile SDA?

Every Windows mobile device I've ever used (> 30 different ones) has always had a Windows directory in the root of the device's file space.

Once you're in Explore click Tools->Folder Options and show hidden files

That's why you can't see them - you have it turned off.

THE $139 offer is offered exclusively through t-mobiles retentions department for a 2 year contract only. $249 for a 1 year contract. (add $100 for the MDA to both prices) These prices also do not include the hassle of submitting/waiting for a rebate. You can only talk to retentions if you are currently out of contract on a t-mobile plan. Dial 611, and say "i want to cancel my service", you will be transferred there immediately.
