Universal on high usage UMTS package

I want to get a Universal, and would be happy to exclusively use it for data. I specifically want the speed/flexibility of UMTS.

I'm comfortable enough getting a phone unlocked, so is the very cheapest way forward to buy the phone on T-Mobile's Web'n'Walk for £100 plus contract and then get one of the Vodafone or Orange UMTS datacards with the 1gb / £45/month deal, and transfer the uSIM? Would that even work? I can always then use the T-Mobile sim in my 'voice' phone.

Are there any better deals buying the phone with a UMTS contract directly? It seems ludicrous that the cheapest way has me end up with a datacard and a sim I don't want or need...!

Why do that?Buy yourself an orange prepay 3Gsim and take advantage of their 1pound a day deal-it now covers 3G as well.I'm not sure if the trick that enables free data works with 3G..I don't have an orange 3Gsim(orange 3G coverage is v poor here)

The Orange website still says that 3G is excluded; I'd be very interested if this limitation has been lifted.

3G has been availiable on prepay for a few weeks(been confirmed by numerous users at several sites).Could be a famous Orange glitch... ATM £1 a day access is on!

Is 3G not accessible on Walk n Web? I just bought one on the basis that it could be used on 3G - everything I have read on the t-mobile site implies it can!!

Is there a difference between a SIM and a USIM? If so how can I tell which one I have??

3G is available on Web & Walk provided you have a USIM.

A USIM is a SIM that works with UMTS (3G) and if you bought a 3G phone it will have come with a USIM, if not then you probably just have a SIM which is not 3G compatable.

Thanks for that - the real question is do T-mobile consider the MDA Pro a 3G phone and therefore give me a USIM? As they give 3G as part of it's spec I believe they should? What have other contributors found?

How could I tell if I have a USIM? There is nothing in the packaging that suggests it is anything other than a GSM sim!

Thanks

The MDA Pro is 3G and they supply a USIM with it. The connection symple will display a G in a square when you have GPRS reception and a U in a square when you have UMTS reception.

Spoke to T-mobile and they confirmed that now there is only one kind of SIM for pay monthly and it does work with 3G. There is no documentation supplied with it to indicate that.

I don't live near a 3G coverage area so couldn't check it (unless Milton Keynes has it) - didn't want to find out in 2 months time I had been supplied with the wrong thing.

Thanks to all

Forgot to ask about the Orange £1 a day deal mentioned earlier in this post. Have trawled the Orange website but cant find any info on this - does anyone know where they have hidden it??

Is it £1 a day everyday, or just when used?

Thanks

This works fine, although you have to wait an hour before it's activated.

No joy via the 450 route, but I can live with an hour's delay for unlimited 3G for a £1 a day.

Cheers to flair

Forgive my ignorance but what is the "450 route"? (A search didn't show any results).

Where have you found the t-mobile £7.50/month deal? Yet again I could find nothing about it in the brochure!! In fact T-m rarely refer to 3G/UTMS in any of the sales literature I have read - at one stage I wondered whether they had it!!!

Clive

Compared to unlimited for £7.50/month on T-Mob.......

clive: the '450 route' means you call 450 off the handset, and follow the options to 'buy an extra' - where you may/may not find the unlimited GPRS bundle.

As for the £7.50 Tmob GPRS deal - it is rumoured to launch on the first of next month - so fingers crossed for all of us considering jumping ship on 1/4/06 ;)

(and I assume the bundle will cover 3G as part of the bundle, as its pretty much the same sort of setup)

Hope that helps.
