Spectec wifi SDW-820 + Mobile 5 Problems

Hello again all you helpful folk ive got a new problem for you.

Having finally recieved my Spectec card this morning in the post im very sad to say that after 10 hours (no exaggeration) i have been unable to even activate the card never mind connect to my router! Heres what ive tried:

1.Downloaded driver for Win Mobile 5 (CAB from Spectec sie) and installed from 'mobile my documents', apparently it was sucessful....nothing happened

2.Uninstalled driver and installed driver and utility from cd....nothing happened

3.Updated cd driver with Mobile 5 driver from spectec site as an update....nothing happened Apart from the wifi icon (wich proptly dissapeared never to return!)

4. Unistalled and tried Go Wifi E300 drivers using regestry hack....nothing happened (tried exe and CAB)

5. Performed hard reset (allowing origional t-mobile rom to boot)

6. Installed Mobile 5 CAB from website again.....nothing happened but the little icon (wich dissapeared again)

7.Repeated all steps performed before step 5.......guess what?........thats right....NOTHING!

I am beginning to think that t-mobile have some sort of wifi blocker software to force me 2 use gprs....could this be anything to do with my rom version/

if so here they are:

ROM version: 1.12.2.23 WWE

ROM date: 11/14/05

Radio version: 01.12.20

Protocol Version: 4.0.13.23

ExtROM 1.12.02.110

I hope someone has had similar issues of knows of other drivers i can use cos i am beginning to give up..... if anyone else with an MDA Comapct II wants a Spectec card then be wary, you may loose days trying to get it working as i am!

Hi,

I have an identical MDA II to yourself and have tried unsuccessfully to get the spectec card to work. I bought this on eBay from "merchantrun" who said it worked with Windows Mobile 5.0 (WM5). Unfortunately, I also wasted a couple of days trying to get it to work. Here are a couple of support emails I got direct from the manufacturer:

Quote start:

Dear ******'

If you have download the driver form our website, the type is .cab file. Pls. according to the method below to install:

1.connect Pocket PC and computer by USB Cable.

2.Run Microsoft ActiveSync4.0(or other high version).

ps:the "ActiveSync" software can download form Microsoft website

3.Build partnership between pocket pc and computer.

4.Copy the .CAB to Pocket PC.

5.Double-click it to install the driver from the PDA.

ps: Before you would like to reinstall the driver, pls remove the old.

It is not support "WLAN application" with our driver in wm5.0 .

About seting the SSID and security the part:

The SSID is no need to set, it can auto pick up the AP(SSID) near, when you insert the card in a PDA.

The security setting pls. refer to the attached file specs.

Regards

******

Unfortunately this does not work. I then got this amazing email on February 16th from a Product manager at Spectec in Taiwan.

Quote start:

Dear Sir,

I have to say sorry to you.

we knew the problem with WLAN on MDA Compact II.

It's hard to find the device here so that it's going a little behind schedule.

I wondering if you can lend me the device for 2 weeks, it'll really help us on the issue.

Thank you for your understanding and feel free to let me know if any problem

They actually wanted to borrow my handset rather than buy their own for product development!!!!!! Despite this amazing request I would actually consider this as I am desperate to get WIFI on the MDA II. However, I am still waiting for a reply to my email at this time.

If anyone can recommend an SDIO wifi card for the MDA II I would be very grateful. I am planning on returning the Spectec 820 to the eBay seller as it is not compatible with WM5.0 as the manufacturer has effectivly confirmed.

Outragous! Why isn't it on the website as an unsupported Device? I just cant believe that they would have knowledge of this....and have a list of unsupported devices.....and not somehow merge those two bits of information. It's the kind of thing that makes you black-list a company

I woke up this morning at 09.30 when my card arrived in the post and im still trying to get it working. What is the monitary value of an entire day of my life i wonder? As you can probably tell this is not the ist time ive tried this....it began with the Kodak one (that was my own fault), then i bough a spectec one 2 weeks ago (think ive been ripped off!), so in frustration i ordered yet another Spectec card and began the paypal refund process. Now i have the 3rd card and it doesn't work on my device (but thats a secret!). I wouldn't mind so much but knowing these things have issues i put in considerable research on the driver ect to ensure i would be compatible.

Ranting aside thanks for letting me know this is a dead end, did you ever have any luck finding a wifi card not built by cowboys? If so let me know cos im determined to get wififofum up and running on oxford road (Manchester). Its become a sort of holy grail to me, and although it might be easier just to go to my lectures and do this whole degree thing im not giving up that easily.

Ps; Maybe we should start from the other end and email HTC and ask them to send a device to Spectec? See if we can get the ball rolling..

PPS: I just tried to email spectec and their mail server doesn't seem to exist any more! all my attempts have been failed deliveries! ....not suprising....theyre probably running spectec hardware..hehe

I had this problem initially sending email via my Wanadoo account. It seems that Spectec are experimenting with a spam blacklist service to stop them receiving spam. It probably has all the wanadoo account's IP addresses listed as potential sources of Spam. I got around this problem by sending the email from my Gmail account. I tried again the next day sending the email via Wanadoo and it got through - although interestingly when Spectec replied, the subject header was

" Fw: ##DNS REVERSE ERROR## RE: SDW-820"

So it looks like they are still using the spam blocking system but on a lower setting.

Regarding finding a card that works, I came across this site yesterday. The MDA II is listed as compatible so it should install and work smoothly (fingers crossed) - the only thing is that it is a bit expensive.

Eastgear SD Wifi WLAN card claimed to be compatible with T-mobile MDA II

UPDATE: I've just noticed that Eastgear call this product the SDW-820 - thus it must be a repackaged Spectec card - thus I would suggest not buying it until its compactibility with the MDA Compact II is confirmed. I have emailed Eastgear requesting this.

If anyone buys this and it works, let us know !

Ok, it seems that spectec have decided to help out! In this forum i have been discussing the MDA Compact II comapatability issues, both me (chris) and this other helpful bloke David have been emailing spectec about their card (along with a few others im sure) and they seem to have decided its worth doing a bugfix!!!

So they have apparently bought a Compact II from the uk and when they get it in Taiwan they are going to test the card and hopefully find a solution!

Heres the other forum on Microsoft Communities including these emails from spectec!:

Click me!!!

This is looking like a real possibility and since the card has shown some spots of recognition (wifi icon appears sometimes) im sure theres just some small conflict that needs fixing, I hope they succeed!!

I will post the second i have any further news..

fUNKUS

Ps: its nice to have some good news on this for a change, i was begining to think that the MDA Compact II would never get wifi!

PPS: Maybe its worth a few of us offering to test whatever changes they make, we will have a few different roms between us im sure so......calling all wifi obsessed MDA Compact II owners!!!

This may be as a result of my email reply when they asked me to send my handset to Taiwan for their development team !! Instead I sent them a link to an eBay sale for an MDA II and also a link to the T-mobile site for a new one - either way with or without a contract, it was only going to cost them about £300.

Anyway this sounds like good news. I had just got a returns number from my eBay seller to return the Spectec card. I'll hang on to it for a few more days and see who sends me a postivite email regarding compatibility first - Spectec or Eastgear (see my earlier post).

Hehe we're a little worried that they have bought an MDA II rather than an MDA Compact II which contains very different hardware and software, and probably already works with the card!. But im sure they will check before buying it!

Im hanging on to my spectec card too, it's nice hardware just needs a bugfix im sure.

Ps. Thanks for helping us out windmill, if enough of us need it, they will deveop it so anyone else who is waiting for wifi should drop them a mail and let them know your interested.

Disaster! I have just had the following email from Spectec confirming our fears that T-mobile have blocked Wifi on the MDA Compact II.

Dear Sir,

Sorry to tell you that we found that the T-mobile blocked WiFi service from preload program in ROM, therefore non of SD WiFi card can run, not only Spectec's.

If users want to release the service, need to re-load to 3rd party's program and it might lost their warranty from T-Mobile.

We are sorry for this and hope you can understand.

Thank you.

So where do we go from here? Complain to T-mobile? This does seem strange as they are advertising a UK Wide WIFI hotspot service.

Hmmm. Could this program they reckon removes sd wifi support be in the extended rom?

By the way, I've renamed the thread as it was looking for help getting wifi working on an HTC Magician/Compact. The MDA Compact II isn't a Magician but an HTC Charmer...

Firstly: Anyone who even vaugely cares about getting this feature back on the T-Mobile rom email T-Mobile, then email them again, repeat these steps untill they realize that we are unsatisified (less likely to give them money) and they will put the feature back in the rom, do it soon because they are supposed to be releasing an update in the near future. This would be the best way.

Secondly: I still think the .dll process could be done manually but it would take a bit of knowlege (the bit i dont have). And alot of time.

Yes, lets put the pressure on. I telephoned T-mobile this morning to ask them to investgate the reasoning behind the WIFI feature ommission - whether commercial or a technical oversight. I also forwarded them the correspondence I have had with Spectec (the WIFI SD card manufacturer). I am promised a call back in a week or so.

The assistant said he had not heard of anyone else with this problem so far, but would escalate the report up his chain.

He also gave me a link to a MDA software update web site. There's nothing there yet for the MDAII, but worth keeping an eye on.
