Phonepad on JAMin

{EDIT}

I have installed AKU2 and this problem is no longer apparent! WOOHOO!

Hi everyone,

I just got my JAMin and have noticed that the 'phonepad' input method does not work. What i mean by this is that when I select phonepad, the onscreen keyboard appears. Any other input method I select works fine (transcriber, block recogniser), but the phonepad will not appear. What is REALLY strange about this is that if I hard reset the device, so that the OS rebuilds, and perform a soft reset before the customisation installation runs, the phonepad works just fine! Of course, this means the device customisation never runs, which leaves me without core applications like the MMS and Smart Dialer.

Has anyone seen this before? It's very frustrating! I've tried everything I can think of, including reloading the ROM, hard reset, soft reset, power down and trying to use the phonepad in various applications. I have checked under Settings > Input and the phonepad is listed and I can even customise options for it - just not actually use it!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum :)

This has come up before with various PPCs. I had the same problem with my i-Mate Jam. :D

What I read in various places was that this is a resources problem and is often caused by Today screen plugins eating them up. You can usually get the Phonepad back after a soft reset when nothing much is running in the background. Eventually though it just won't load - as you describe - and writing texts etc becomes a real pain.

The real bad news though is that PPC techs reckon that this won't be fixed without a wholesale rewrite of the OS. :roll:

Hey Disco,

Thanks for the reply - this problem has been driving me nuts! I haven't enabled any specific today screen plugins, or even any extra applications. This literally happens after a hard reset, but only when I let the customisation run.

I have been playing around for the last hour and discovered some interesting things:

1. I unlocked the Ext2ROM and copied the contents to my SD card;

2. I hard reset the device and soft reset to avoid the customisation;

3. Phonepad works fine (as expected);

4. I began manually installing the required CAB files, notably MMS and Smart Dialer;

5. Everything looks good, so I decide to find the "offending" .CAB;

6. I now believe that the *EDIT* Default_MP_Shortcut_MMS1_JAVA_VOICE_CV_051213.cab is causing the issue, it requires the device to be soft reset and after that, the phonepad is dead.

So I think you're right - it IS a resource issue. This .CAB must be faulting somewhere, perhaps it's a one time installer app that just won't die :?:

Meanwhile, i'm going to have my clean install JAMin and install only the apps I want.

I should also point out, this phone is amazing - have had it for 30 hours and LOVE it!

I'm impressed with your detective work. We'd all be interested to know anything further you might discover. :)

'TSK' is the standard PPC Today screen file - which suggests that the problem is in this area somewhere.

I went down the selective extended ROM route but couldn't get rid of the disappearing phonepad problem. At the time there was no definitive explanation for all the cabs and I seem to remember installing most of them just to get the basics functioning.

So am I right in thinking you guys don't have resource-intensive Today screen plugins like weather reports, RSS feeds, media players etc ?

Are you installing third party applications to the storage card ?

Getting this problem after one day's use is ridiculous ! :shock:

I have the problem with the default Today screen. I logged a call with I-Mate yesterday - currently waiting for a response.

Spb's Pocket Plus is quite a resource-hog, I believe. I imagine you would probably solve the problem if you uninstalled it.

Good luck with i-Mate support, greyt. Writing to Father Christmas was a better bet when I first got the Jam :roll:

Hi ddieter,

If you follow what I did earlier in this post, you should be able to get it to work. The trade off for me was no MMS, as I believe this is the application that conflicts.

So to recap,

Unlock ExtRom;

Copy CAB files from ExtRom to external location (like SD card);

Hard reset phone;

Soft reset before auto customisation;

Manually install apps you want (I kept it simple, just smart dialer and operator settings);

Phonepad should work now!

Let me know if it doesn't, i'd be interested as to why!

Phone pad is gone, and I cannot get it back up no matter what I do.

I've uninstalled the anti-virus, but still nothing?

Any suggestions?

Hi all, this is my first post coz I only got the Jamin this morning. Really should be revising but oh well! I have been playing around with it, and I too have noticed a lack of phone pad. Now I have never owned a PPC before so am a little dubious about what to do- I undertstand from the above replies that removing the anti-virus might do it. Do you mean the CA eTrust anti-virus? Do I just go to remove? After that do I need to do a hard/ soft re-set?? How do I do these??? As you can tell, I'm new!! Thanks a lot for your help. Cheers.

I would strongly suggest now is the time to get the latest firmware update from clubimate, since you will lose all your config when you upgrade it - so better to do it before you are too far down the line. The upgrade resolves the keypad problem.

Ok great thanks will do. I am going to play around with it for a day or so to see how I get on with it and then download the new ROM from clubimate- I take it I just download it to my laptop and transfer across? Thanks for your advice though- glad the new rom sorts out the phone pad issue.

Greyt is spot on. The new rom's - either 23rd March or 6th April roms fix the phonepad issue longterm.

To upgrade, you need to make sure battery is fully charged and that you have synced your outlook data, then just download and run the rom upgrade. When it finishes, it reinstalls your operator settings and then you should hard reset once more - as this will clean the new installation. (Imate reckon you dont need to hard reset after a rom upgrade - but I have upgraded twice and the device has been a pig until you do the final reset.

Then sync your data back in from outlook.

Thanks a lot for your advice- I'm going to do the update asap coz I dont really feel I can really get into my new toy, until it is full and complete- you know what I mean?!? Also, I have never had an outlook account in the past, I have always just used hotmail- can this be linked to outlook? Or is it something to do with it not supporting POP3? I have another yahoo account which does suport pop3. Obviously, I want to start using the jamin for email- do I need to set up outlook on that, or just go straight into my yahoo address?? I'm really confused on this- it's pathetic!!!

Outlook is the pc based PIM (personal information manager) and your device syncs with that. It can collect email from your pop/imap/exchange server accounts. You can collect hotmail on it if you subscribe to their extra services. You would need to go into your yahoo mail settings on the web to switch pop forwarding on. You then use activeysnc to sync your mail/contacts/calendar between outlook and your device.

You can also set up specific accounts for hotmail (in pocket msn) and for yahoo etc on your device. Just go into messaging, select tools, new accounts and then ente your email address. It will collect the server settings and then you just enter your username and password and you can then send/receive emails over gprs /wifi/activeysnc passthrough on the device.
