US T-Mobile SDA firmware update.

OK... Who's installed the new iMate firmware on a US T-Mobile SDA?

Is i-mate_SP5m_WWE_2.5.331.2.zip the correct version to install?

Does the update work?

What are the improvements? I have heard 1) IE is faster, 2) push mail support added, 3) bluetooth beaming supported, 4) improved camera software

Any problems with the update?

I would really like to hear from people who have updated the same model phone I have before trying this myself. So, if you have the same phone as me, and have installed this update, I would really like to hear from you, and I imagine others would as well.

Thanks!

-Dana

also for those brave souls who have already tried it .. can you please confirm 2 things

1. MMS continues to work (obviously after plugging in the right settings)

2. TZone push email works also ... what I mean here is, that Tmobile lets setup any of your email (pop or imap) on tzones (tmobile.com) and then lets your phone know about it by a silent sms, and phone connects to get the mail ..

just like Exchange PUSH but I have noticed its not that instant, however its GREAT, and far better than you phone having to dial every x minutes

Also for my tmobile SDA buddies .. which plan are you using .. there is a way to get teh cheapest 4.99 tzones, and still be able to browse the web.

It works like a charm on my SDA. All features are supported and working. Push mail is great :-) Just make sure to use SP5m firmware.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I had heard that 2.5.311.2 was the right version for the US SDA, not the 2.6.311.2

Can anyone confirm which version should be used for the US T-Mobile SDA?

Thanks,

-Dana

I updated mine to 2.6.311.2

works great.. everything thing is fine.. now can asomeone explain to me what PUSH mail is?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

POP e-mail requires the client to check the server on request, or on a scheduled basis to see if there is new e-mail.

With push mail, your clients just sits there. When the server receives mail for you, it actually contacts your device and tells it to pull the mail. But since the process is started by the server and not the client, it's called push mail.

So, basically, the mail retrieval is initiated by the server when there is a message. This eliminates unnecessary connections and traffic. This is also how Blackberry works, more or less...

Clear as mud?

That's not exactly right. HTTP is a Request/Response protocol. You request something, and wait X seconds for the server to respond to the request. What happens with Push mail is that your phone initiates an HTTP connection to the Exchange Server. If there is mail to retrieve, the exchange server will send the response immediately. If there is no mail, the server will simply not respond until one of two things happen:

1) Mail arrives at the server (at which point the response will be sent indicating new mail)

2) The timeout occurs, at which point the phone will initiate a new request and start from the beginning.

Push E-Mail is not Push at all. The request is always initiated by the phone.

I agree with "dleasman", however what I am talking about in my post is also a special feature T-Mobile has in USA (not sure elsewhere)

below is an Excerpt form Tmobile site

http://search.t-mobile.com/inquiraapp/ui.j..._box=push+email

T-Mobile's My E-mail service provides you unlimited access to up to eight of your work and personal e-mail accounts from any T-Mobile phone or handheld. Instantly access your e-mail and take care of business wherever you are.

My E-mail - enables you to get your e-mail from AOLĀ®, Yahoo!Ā® Mail Plus, Earthlinkā„¢, ComcastĀ®, and many more, including any POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail servers. Also, receive text message alerts when you are sent an important e-mail. Smartphone users can sign up with a T-Mobile Internet plan, while conventional phone users sign up with a T-MobileWeb account.

Corporate My E-mail - includes the additional features of access to your e-mail, calendar, and contacts from MicrosoftĀ® Exchange Server (Outlook Web Access) and IBMĀ® Lotus NotesĀ®/DominoĀ® Server (Lotus iNotes). Smartphone users can sign up for T-Mobile Internet with Corporate My E-mail, while conventional phone users sign up with t-zonesSM Pro.

Once you are subscribed to T-MobileWeb, you will be able to access the My E-mail service. The next step is a one-time setup from My T-Mobile or your phone via T-MobileWeb to enable wireless access to your e-mail account(s). Then you will be ready to start checking your e-mail, composing new messages, etc., all from your phone, whenever you want.

Different phones provide different ways to access your e-mail. Some use the browser on the phone; others use an e-mail program that is built-in to the phone.

-------------

Above all , they also have a special settings on the site which sends your phone a specially crafted message (only few phones support accrding to them - and I confirm that my SDA does) to make the phone check the mail ...

So in effect, TMO Server keeps an EYE on your new incoming mail, and then when it sees new mail, it notifies the phone to get MORE ;)

its a HYBRID PUSH PULL ;)

You are correct as well :-) Before the latest firmware, the only way to do Push e-mail was via the SMS method that you described.

thanks.

Then my question still stands... will this continue to happen with new firmware?

my concern is as follows,

currently I dont have my work email PUSH ... (i am the exhange admin) so I dont want to buy the TMO plan for corporate email ... so the new firmware will rock once i have my Exchange box setup with certificates.

However If I get the new firmware, I will have work email PUSHed ... but will I continue to get my HOME email (usa.net POP based), to do the push as well ... like now ?

You should be able to set it up still. The only difference I could find is that you won't have the T-Mobile Hotspot utility.

Just make sure that you have all of your e-mail settings backed up/written down somewhere.

Did this firmware happen to fix the very slow Wi-Fi downloads. I am currently using the US SDA for about 5 days now and withouth the Data plan on my school, and home wireless network downloads are incredible slow (90k per minute).

the iMate ROM is in no way affiliated with the T-Mobile SDA. You will lose out on OZ IM program (which works terribly anyways) and the My E-Mail set up.

I did the update (sp5m wwe_2.6.331.2) about 3 days ago and all is fine...actually better than the tmo version. Most programs are a little faster and respond better. The wifi downloads are also a little faster and I have noticed that I can hold a connection longer and better. The mms works great once you get the settings back in the phone (i suggest copying/writing down your mms settings before doing the upgrade). Also make sure you read the procedure carefully and that you are comfortable with modding yor phone before attempting it. Im still trying to figure out how to re-map the tzones button to something else. When I tap it now it goes to the i-mate site. All in all, it is worth doing it.

To remap the T-Zones button, first app unlock your phone. Then replace the Short_AP1.lnk and Long_AP1.lnk files with whatever shortcuts you want. In case you're curious, AP2, AP3, and AP4 work as well :-)

Got the new iMate firware on my SDA, but now have a new problem. The Application Lock appears to be re-enabled, as it won't let me edit the registry, or add/remove/update files in the windows folder, and won't let me run .cab files that modify the registry. Also, many applications will not install, stating that I do not have permissions.

Sounds like the application lock is back on. However, since it's not actually an SDA anymore, I can't use the SDA_ApplicationUnlock tool.

Does anyone know how I can unlock my phone again?

Check this link out. Do the registry changes with the signed editor then use the sda unlock tool. Worked great for me ;) About 12 posts down

The link above does not appear to work... Anyone else?

Edit: I just figured it out... Used PHM RegEdit to change a couple keys, then used the SDA_ApplicationUnlock tool and rebooted the phone. Back in business! I do recommend to those who do the firmware update to do the install mod, removing the vendor tag, instead of sim unlocking and just running the install. In the end, it would be easier.

regarding the PUSH email.

One of my colleagues just upgraded, to this firmware, and NO the Original PUSH email from tmobile does not work.

see my prev post for details, He now gets those secret TEXT messages from tmobile on new email as NON SECRET . He actually gets a real SMS stating he has new mail, previously the phone would get a secret message, and the phone will silently connect to download more mail ...
