Help on considering a Jamin

Need a bit of help here......I've read good and bad about the Jamin. I'm not a particularly heavy PDA user (currently have a 2210) but I am a heavyish phone user. Just really want the PDA as an decent organiser or maybe the occasional game here and there. I think the Jamin may be for me as it means I won't need to carry both PDA and phone around but.......I travel a bit and also use more than 1 sim in the phone - is there any way of showing the network provider on the screen? Also I'm considering running GPS on the phone too - can the GPS and phone be used at the same time? Finally has the dodgy earpiece quality been sorted?

Many thanks in advance

Paul

Hi Paul,

It's really hard to asnwer for your particular needs. The JAMin does feel a little bit like the jack-of-all-trades, but that said, it is a very good device. For heavy phone use, it has its good and bad points. I think it has excellent GSM reception (well, mine does anyway), but the built-in earpiece speaker and hands free speaker are definately sub-par. The ring volume is not good either, though it does have a vibrate function. As with other PocketPC phone edition devices, the phone function takes the form af an application, just like any other app on the device, and this makes it feel a little bit like an add-on, rather than a primary function.

If PDA functionality is not a major function for you, you might need to concider a smartphone edition device. However, they run different software to PocketPC devices, so if you already have apps you want to carry on using that might not be so good.

I hate dissing the JAMin, because I really do like mine a lot, but I also believe that it's not for everyone. Best advise is that if you can see one, do so. Obvious I know.

I wish you the best in making the right decision.

Regards, Toonie.

I have a Dopod 818 Pro (a version of the HTC Prophet, which is what the JAMin is) and have just installed the iMate ROM - so effectively I have a JAMin now...

The Dopod ROM was creaky at best, and in comparison the iMate one is really good. For me it's fixed all of the problems the Dopod had - losing the SD card, SD card reported as full, WiFi not enabling etc etc etc

I don't have an issue with the earpiece, but I often use it with a BT headset so perhaps I've just not noticed the "problem".

Not all software is compatible with WM5, so check the apps that you are particularly interested in.

Yes, the phone can be used at the same time as a GPS. It should also be possible to use the BT headset at the same time as the BT GPS. I've not actually tried that though.

I don't know of a way to show the network on the Today screen, but there are some free apps (names escape me at the moment) which might add that functionality. I'll see if I can remeber their names...

There probably isn't space under the battery cover for a Dual Sim adaptor, but if you've got one of theose "cut your SIM card up" things then that should work OK. I'm not sure how though, you may just be able to turn flight mode ON then OFF again to change SIMs, but you may need to restart the device - which takes about 1 minute on mine with loads of rubbish loaded.

Hey nice one...that'd be much appreciated. Much better than hooking the back off to see which sim I have in. Also I'm a bit nervous if the thing goes wrong. I'm with Orange at the mo and if there's a problem I get a phone within 24 hours. mind you, I see the service centre is in Ashford which is about 20 miles away so I suppose thats not so much of an issue. BTW, what network are you on and how do you find reception compared to a conventional mobile?

Thanks for the help

So I'm with Orange and have moved from an SPVc500 via an M500 to an Imate Jamin.

The Jamin's very good. Radio reception is not as good as my M500 was (but usually thats down to individual devices rather than actual models). I never have a problem with the ring tone - but thats cos I use a loud one.

If you are used to a phone keypad, the onscreen phonepad and/or keyboard take a little getting used to (no texting without looking at the device).

I use a bt headset in the car but use it without a headset the rest of the time and actually find the Jamin's speaker clearer than the M500.

The GPRS is better than any orange branded smartphone/PDA I have had - ie it reconnects seamlessly after a voice call and the wifi is excellent.

I am slightly concerned about the lack of insurance - but you can always claim a handset off orange if you have insurance (obviously not a Jamin but the one they previously supplied) with a new simcard.

The only annoying thing about the Jamin is inadvertently ending calls or making a second call whilst on the phone - courtesy of my finely chiselled cheekbones on the screen - but I had that with the M500 as well.

Not true - they check your account to see what handset you were using based on IMEI, if it doesn't match that on your policy they won't help, and if they do go for it when you claim that you were using a different phone temporarily as the other was faulty etc , the old handset that you've presumably sold on will get barred.

Actually, I forgot to mention I'm dumping Orange as the reception where I live is awful so I'm going to Vodafone meaning that insurance isn't so much of an issue anyway.

I'm hearing bad things about the earpiece volume......any truth in this? I'm a bit a of a newbie to all this but did the firmware update resolve any volume problems? My hearings a bit shot at the best of times!!!
