Guest Paul [MVP] Posted April 21, 2006 Report Share Posted April 21, 2006 I was looking around on the web at Exchange Push Email providers today, and I came across mail2web, a company i've had dealings with before in fact. What I DIDN'T realise was that they are offering, totally free of charge, and Exchange push email account! They seem to be offering the whole suite of features, such as - Push Mail - Anti Virus - Anti Spam - Outlook Web Access - Outlook Mobile Access - Server ActiveSync - Email aggregation (not included in base Exchange even!) all free of charge... to be honest I really don't understand how they can afford to do it... but i'm not complaining! If you have a nice new AKU2'd device and you've been itching to give push mail a go... here's your chance. What do you not get? You don't get RPC-HTTP access so far as I can work out, nor POP / IMAP / SMTP (so you can't use desktop packages, including Outlook), but heck, it's a great deal at the price, particularly as a dedicated mobile device account to supplement your normal mail. It can even pick up other POP3 / IMAP enabled account, including GMail! Post your experiences below, and if you are looking for a full featured Exchange account, I heartily recommend the great value 4Smartphone offerings. Guest travisb Posted April 21, 2006 Report Share Posted April 21, 2006 (edited) Paul, I signed up a couple of weeks ago, and accessing the Web version of Outlook has been pretty good so far. There is a mobile friendly link which also is ok. As soon as I get the AKU2 update for the Vario (hurry up T-Mobile!) I'll give it a go. I run my own server at home and I like it that way. Ideally I'm looking for a service that can take a message from me (e.g. forwarded email, hitting a specific URL etc) that will then tell my phone to do a sync. If you want a work around to Outlook pop access, you can set a rule to forward all inbox mail to your email address at mail2web and then have it pushed to your device while you're out and about ;) Just hit tools > rules and alerts in Outlook and follow the wizard :P Oh and I've used mail2web for ages for pop3 access while away from home. Guest themugger Posted April 21, 2006 Report Share Posted April 21, 2006 Gonna have a look at this, to be honest i dont mind paying! i have just finished setting up 4smartphone but it takes ages for the mail to get to there web outlook, but as soon as it gets there its straight to my phone. just needs to get to there servers quicker! Guest Doublevision Posted April 21, 2006 Report Share Posted April 21, 2006 Been using most of the functions except push e-mail on my Orange C600 with AKU2 update for about a month now. Happy with the updating of my contacts and calendar items to the Exchange Host, seems to work perfectly. The web Based Outlook is basic but perfectly useable. I am really using it as a remote backup of all my phone data. I received an e-mail last week stating the new Push E-mail support was activated from the company and I tried it one evening via a continuous dial-up account (Virgin.net) as I have no GPRS dataplan set-up (but a heck of a lot of free minutes to use up :P ). I sent several e-mails during the evening from a web based e-mail account to the Web2Mail e-mail address and even through the slow data connection, I was getting the e-mail within approx. 30 seconds. I am yet to auto-forward from Web Mail account but I can't see this being a problem. One thing that should be noted in my past discussions on this forum was the fact that in the Terms and Conditions, Web2Mail can tack an advert as a small amount of text at the bottom of each e-mail sent. I have not had this yet but I would guess it may appear when they need to start paying for this free service. I love that every 5 mins (I don't have the latest push email update) I can sync all my info and get my email. Works great. Because it will impress your mates ;-) I was thinking the same thing, I have been doing a manual download of POP3 e-mail with dial up for years since I had a Ericsson T-39, do I really need to know the instant a message comes in........probably not. Then there is the hassle of either telling people a different e-mail address or replying with the hosted Exchange address when e-mail is forwarded...mmmmmm. Just of interest 'Encece,' can yuu give me an esimate of how much monthly data you use for your method (this could be like asking how long is a piece of string)? At the moment I use dial up but thinking of getting a GPRS dataplan and downloading my single account, (limiting to 1k per message) once an hour automatically. Thanks. But I also d/l weather, rss feeds, and websurf automatically all day. I have unlimited data, so I never had to track. Did take me some time to find everything, so here is a little quick guide to get it working: 1) Sign up here 2) Open Activesync on your phone and configure the server with the following; Server Name: mobile.exchange.mail2web.com ActiveSync Username: ***Your Exchange Email Address*** Password: ***Your Password*** Domain: ad2 3) Open the Comm Manager and make sure "Microsoft DirectPush" is enabled. I don't see any downsides ;) P As I understand it there is a regular "heartbeat" between the device and phone which, I believe, Microsoft say should be between 5 - 8 Mb /month but others have reportrd could be as high as 12 Mb / month - this is without any emails which, of course, would be on top of that. Orange in the UK say they have reduced the amount of data used for this heartbeat but I'm not sure if that's only if you use their server. Push email is great for those of us on unlimited data plans but if you're paying for your data I'd sugest you monitor it carefully as you could be in for a nasty surprise! Push email changes the nature of emailing, you can use it to hold conversations rather like SMS. Without it, if someone sends you an email it could take 15 mins for you tou get it, you reply and then it could take another 15 mins to get their reply - not much good if it' the misses asking you to pick something up on the way home from work for instance. it doesn't suit everyone but I don't know anyone who's tried it that doesn't miss it if they lose it.
