Wifi connection issue with my prophet (M600)

Hi all,

I have a big problem with my Prophet and its WIFI, I didn't manage to connect to anything.

First, I had the Orange French rom.

When i tried to connect to my hotspot with WPA protection, although the prophet could see the hotspot, try to connect to it, connection seemed to stay blocked... status was "connected to network" but no IP given (DHCP is activated on my hotpot) and WPA key was well entered into the device.

Then I read that WPA wasn't well supported by WM5 so i put a WEP encryption on my hotspot. This time the prophet connect and an IP address appeared in wifi settings, but connection reseted all the time... connected, not connected, connected again, not connected...

impossible to stabilise the connection.

I tried on another hotspot without encryption, and same thing, connection reseting again and again...

Now I've just tried with the last dopod rom, but no change, the wifi connection is impossible since it disconnecting all the time...

I'm kinda lost, dunno what's going wrong with something that should work without any problems...

I've seen other post with similar isseus but no real solution (or maybe I've lost something).

Could it be a material failure?

Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Cedrick

I had the same problems and there doesn't seem to be a solution, I thought I had seem that the Imate Rom was better, but can't find that thread any longer.

I have given up with the phone, I really wanted the wifi function, but as you say it doesn't stay connected and is poor!

Well, regarding the price of this PDAphone... giving up on it isn't really acceptable. Above all when it's not the first HTC terminal that comes with wifi...

I don't understand why something that should work without problem is so f**ked up :)

I still hope there's a solution on it, I really need the wifi as VoIP PPC software are about to come out this month...

Anyone else ?

There are so many variables on both devices when setting up wifi that loads of users have problems.

I have an Imate JAMin. Imate's branded version of the Prophet. The wifi on it works brilliantly with WEP 128. So it is either the Orange M600's rom is screwing the wifi (although I cant see them making changes that would physically affect it) or the m600 build is faulty or ...heaven forbid...you guys are not setting them up right.

I dont mean to suggest that you dont know how to set up wifi, but WM5 wifi does sometimes need a little assistance. For example, SSID really should be on - the SDIO wifi card drivers in all WM5 devices can be very iffy when trying to connect to an access point with SSID off.

There have been countless posts on www.imateforum.com where new users have been unable to use their wifi successfully - but as they all seem to report that they are now working, it seems that there are better ways to set them up and get them to work.

I would go back to basics:

1) Turn off mac filtering, turn off WEP/WPA, turn on SSID broadcast

2) Make sure your wifi G access point is working in both G and B modes (as it may be that orange's rom is a step backwards and they have only enabled "b"

3) Put wifi slider on device to max performance

4) Delete all existing hotspot settings in the device (as sometimes the OS keeps a record of previous WEP keys etc for SSID's.

5) Try and connect.

If it does work - then you can start to turn the various security and speed options back on and see which setting mucks it up again.

If it turns out that it is the wireless mode (eg B or G), then there is a reg tweak to enable G properly.

That's some pretty good advice!

I've had grief with my 3com router with WEP turned on, my M600 dropped it's connection every now and then and would refuse to come back on. I have since then switched to a netgear router, was still iffy with the WEP on but with the WEP switched off and MAC filtering enabled it works a treat! been listening to steaming radio for a few hours with no connection problems at all!

WEP seems like it's causing my problem, i'd rather not leave the WEP off but i really enjoy the WIFI built into this amazing piece of kit!

The problem on my side is that I can't connect to public and free hot spot in town either...

I understand that your home setting are important, although I would think that a devide supposed to handle WEP and WPA encryptin would work fine with those settings... But then, I have exactly the same problem on whatever hotspot without protection I can find. The wifi is connecting and disconnecting over and over...

So i come to think my problem is more hardware than software since I tried with many spot and with 2 different roms... always the same.

Hi, as I said I am giving up on the device, i had it on contract from orange and have reported this as a fault so I have the option of changing it.

You are right this should work fine and it would be great to be able to use the wifi at hotspots-which it should be able to do easily.

Regarding the advice above, I have tried everything I can think of as above and with several wifi points at home and work, nothing stays connected for long, I think I got a connection for 15-20mins but once that went it wouldn't come back again.

I think its probably down to orange the hardware is the same for each device. They seem to have messed up other stuff to, like the rubbish dialer that can't be seen in daylight.

Well, I have asked Orange France to switch my device with another M600 as they are unable to give me a solution.

I won't give up on this prophet until I tried another one. Maybe mine had an hardware issue, who knows... if it still doesn't work, I'll go for a wizard maybe... but I definitly need wifi on my device to test VoIP.

Btw, I doubt Orange would have f**ked up the hardware of the prophet... but I have no doubt Orange rom are far from the best. the point is I have switched in my last test to a Dopod WWE rom which was said to be the best atm, and I had the same problem with the wifi...

I haven't tried the Jamin one but i won't cause if I have exactly the same issue with 2 different rom, then it's obviously hardware...

Tommorow I'll have my new device and will get back to test :)
