No, for some bizarre reason the default connection doesn't allow you to add a proxy. :D

At least not on my device! :D

P

Umm... I added it directly to the default connection!

Ok. My connection is flying at the moment using the French proxy, and direct push also working fine.

About time we got some help from the French for a change :D

Any French mods out there feel free to delete this and kick my butt :D

Any non-Plus members that would sign up to Plus for a dedicated UK based proxy?

Definately.

Its always going to be better than anything Tmob are likely to offer.

(Would have to work with Direct Push of course)

- Click the 'Proxy Settings' Tab
- Click 'This network connects to the internet'
- Click 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet'
- Click Advanced

HERE YOU NEED TO ENTER THE PROXY DETAILS

For test details, i'm using the PlanetLabs proxy with IP 194.80.38.242 on port 3128. It's only suitable for test however, and might not give a true respresentation of speed improvements with a better proxy. Running one on a home or hosted machine would be one option.

- After entering the details, click 'OK'.
- Ensure that in the top drop down box your new network is selected.
- Disconnect your existing connection
- Try browsing! You should get the PlanetLabs welcome page first, then you should be able to browse.

Paul,

Do you enter this into the HTTP proxy bit?

I probably would but I'm waiting to see if the new Vodafone plans on 1 Sept have a decent data bundle before I buy my v1605. I'd have taken the plunge long ago if only T-Mobie had any coverage in northern Scotland. :D

Yes, click on HTTP enter the IP address 195.221.155.57 and replace the default port 80 (in the next box to the right) with 3128.

I cant seem to get these extra settings working but it might just be the area I am in and poor coverage.

I will see what happens and keep you posted.

EDIT:

Ok, I am testing now..I have coverage and am getting certain things up pretty fast...

What kind of speeds are you guys seeing? I would say "meh" about the speeds...but you guys seem rather impressed...

Most important thing to me is it no longer hangs on 'opening', that's what really matters, less waiting around.

When the page starts coming down, it's very fast too, but maybe I notice it more because i'm on GPRS rather than 3G/HSDPA here?

It seems faster for me at home, I'll give it a go tomorrow on the train, this is when I find the device extremely slow.

OMG, the difference (using the DNS change & Proxy) is like night and day. It's so fast, that I don't see locating or opening now - it flys - even with 2 signal bars. I was feeling pretty disappointed with the Vario 2, but now it's everything I hoped. Great job and yes, count me in for a Plus membership with Proxy if these speeds can be sustained.

P.s I could add the proxy to existing TMo settings too!

Thanks!
