There are about a million billion free wifi spots all over! so why not take your headphone/hands free business, install skype and get a skyoe in number and buy up some skype out credit! far cheaper than roaming i think. by the way, it won't work in japan as a phone as it's only a tri band phone (or so i'm led to believe) good luck! where abouts you going? i been 3 times and it's bloody amazing!!! enjoy!!!! In answer to your other questions I went all over Nara, Kyoto, Kanaswa, Hiroshima and Miyajima and yes it is an amazing place I love it there.
