I want a decent screen, sensible design, usable keypad goddamit! :) P I think my first Orange phone was my Comunicator 9000i, which I still have somewhere. please dont tell anyone that I used to own a N*kia! Then, several years later, I got a 7210 as a replacement for my eight T68i that'd gone wrong. That was what killed the Nokia for me - the fact that I picked up my 7210 and most of the operating system was exactly the same as my 3310, just in colour and with two or three options added. I know this is exactly the reason Nokia's sell and why the owners love them, but if I can use every feature on a phone within the first week, there's no way I'll make it another 51 weeks without getting really bored. I need to have a phone that you still discover things you can do months after you bought it. That was what sold the original SPV to me - the fact that when I got bored I just downloaded another program and the phone changed again. Oh, and how can people with Nokia's still stand for having to pay for ringtones and backgrounds?!? That would drive me absolutely nuts!! Sorry - rant over and I promise never to say anything against Nokia's again here. I just find the camera and video recording the most fun part of a mobile phone. When Windows smartphones catch up in that arena, i'll be straight back. I currently have an N70, and I love it. Yes the keypad does take a bit of getting used to, but the OS and apps that run on it are terrific. Looks like the Prophet has a half decent camera, so we're getting there! Thankfully though it happened just months before I was due to move to Canada so it worked out ok. Used to really like the look of my bro's Nokia 7110 Matrix Phone too (yes, I know it wasn't the actual Matrix phone - for that they used a modified banana phone). And although I love my Windows Mobile devices (and I've had a few now!) I can't get rid of my Nokia 6310i. As a phone, it's awesome. It doesn't 'do' much, but it always gets a great signal, and the battery life is brilliant. I always take it on holiday with me coz sometimes, I just need a phone. With all the Windows devices, the phone seems secondary. It does annoy me though that many people won't even entertain anything other than a Nokia. "They're so easy to use" I've got a C500, with a 1 gig card in it, that nobody in the family wants because it's "too complicated" to use. So I'll keep that too I guess. Nice features tho! :) P I have a C550 for my work phone, and my own personal phone is an N70. Ever since the 7650 I've been a fan of symbian phones, but the last one I owned and used regularly until now was the 6600 (a real classic of its time.) I brought a 6630 because I was really looking forward to a 3G 6600 but it really disappointed, as did the 6680. The Orange Homescreen on the 6680 really killed it for me. During my time with Symbian phones I did look at the SPV range on Orange. The original SPV and its successor did not impress much. I remember when I first viewed the original in an Orange shop. I found the homescreen cluttered and the menu structure was poorly laid out. I did purchase a C500, in fact in total I think I brought three. But each time it did not last more than a few weeks, quickly finding their way onto Ebay. I've moved over to Vodafone since then. The online 30 day sim only deals were a massive saving on what I had with Orange at the time. I picked up a Vodafone branded N70. I think the N70 is actually one of the better new range of Symbian phones to be reeleased in the last 12 months or so. More stable than the 6630 and 6680, better all round appeal than the N90 and not yet released N91. For me usability on the Symbian phones is above that on MS phones. I'm registered on the Modaco forums and I read regularly, trying to pick up tips on being a windows smartphone user. The menu structure on MS phones is long winded, just lists and lists of detail. Can it be customised? Can I move my own favourite features to the top of the list? Can I make normal changes without having to 'hack the registry' each time? Can I mark all messages to be deleted at once, rather than having to do it one by one? Can I easily send an SMS to a number I just dialled? Can I recall a number I just dialled easily by pressing the green send key? For me the answer is apparently not. Now I'm not such a dumbass when it comes to phones but even these basic features are torturous on a windows smartphone. With a Symbian phone it is so different. The menu structure is mine to command. I can choose a list view or a a grid view with icons. I can move the icons around, restructuring what I see to put my favourite features at the top and move the least used options to the bottom off the main screen view. I can move icons out of their folders, put them in the main menu or put them in folders I have created. Sending SMS to numbers I've just called is as easy as pie, recalling my dialled numbers list is again straight forward. Mass deletion of SMS is not a chore, sending an SMS to reject a call is automatic, and so on. Copy and paste of messages on the phone is simple. Sure the keypad on the N70 isn't the best, but then the rounded keys on the C550 are not much better. With a new piece of software from Yahoo, that integrates fully with existing phone features (calendar, messaging, etc) and allows me to instantly receive emails sent to my Yahoo address, and use Yahoo messenger on the phone as straight forward as on my PC, Symbian has now matched some features on Windows phones (integrated MSN messenger, etc) and still retained the features I feel make it a better phone O/S. Anyway I've had, Nokia 7650, 3650, N-gage, QD, 6630. & on the Windows mobile side : Spv e100, c500, c550, mpx200. Yeah, I noticed that yesterday afternoon when I was looking over a C600. Much nicer handset than the C550, better keypad, nicer look and feel, with the inportant menu buttons much nicer to use. Why couldn't the C550 music buttons be the small ones instead? Would have made a good difference. And I agree, the menu layout on the C600 with 'pretty icons' is nicer to look at and use. Guest Posted January 17, 2006 Report Share Posted January 17, 2006 I recently tried an N90 as I was wanting the decent camera on it, but only lasted for 2 hours before it had to go back. The problems were in data use, I just couldn't get it to do what I wanted. Probably just used to the MS way of doing things rather than an actual problem, but it didn't work for me. That and the poor syncronisation with Outlook (no notes field in contacts or calender) did it for me. Back with MS and a shiny new Qtek 8300. It does what I need, and does it well. I've currently got a Sharp 903, which has a camera that wees all over the N90 from a great height. I have the M5000 set up on single user sim and now this means i should be able to use the N70 for voice and 3G and the M5000 for data. Arrives Friday.. hope it's at least ok for calls! You won't be able to change it, it takes up a lot of memory and causes the phone to crash, regularly. Don't judge the N70 by Orange's awful bastardisation of the menu system. Will post sample pics from Sharp shortly. Yes reflashing will get rid of the hoescreen and return the N70 to the device that Nokia intended it to be. An N70 without Orange firmware will run much faster than one with it. The N70 is a damn good phone, it's scandalous that Orange are allowed to butcher it so badly. I started with the Nokia 909 [analog - no sim :)] then went thru, 6100, 6150, 3210, 5100, 8210,8250 [x2 one acted up and had to be replaced], 6210 [x2 - same as 8250], 8310 [x2 - same as 8250], 7650, I then changed to a SE t68i, then back to nokia 3100, N7610 and 1100 [had 2 sims], then went WM [i-mate JAM and Moto MPx220] now I have a dopod 838[got rid of my 2nd sim]. Phones don't usually last that long with me I like to change my mobile alot but ever since I went WM I noticed I kept my device longer [the longest time I've had a phone was 1 yr and 1/2 month i-mate JAM, my MPx 220 I owned for about 6months] I think because I can do a lot more with them and I didn't get bored. I think Nokia S60 is very promising as a Smartphone OS... it's fairly easy to use and there are a lot of applications for it as well, however the designs are really going down the tube...
