SIM card wastage

Because the physical act of registering the new sim card gives an exact record of the upgrade for purposes of contract/warranty/etc.. That's the only reason I am aware of (and it is, of course, completely unofficial).

Indeed so - Also you have to factor in the matter of Sim Updates. One phone is different from another, and certain handsets (i.e. Motorolas) will refuse to send text messages off older sim cards unless they have appropriate updates on them to be able to use this facility.

Also, think about MMS and GPRS etc -- new sim cards are a very easy way for Orange to keep their network and handsets up to date with the latest technologies.

Sure, its an ache to transfer all your numbers, but its easier in the longrun :)

I agree, someone with a profile 7 SIM card from yesteryear which still exsist on the network are far more likely to develop problems with the newer technologies of today, than someone with a profile 18. SIM updates can only cure things to a certain degree. :D

Here in the US, Cingular will not just send you a SIM. You'll have to buy one at a brick and mortar, or buy one through a rep on the phone with a valid CC#.

...at least here in my market.

I've had 2 phones and one SIM. I bought a 64k SIM when they first rolled out.
