"New Orange Email Service"

Have any of you been contacted for this Orange Trial?

I was tempted, but having read their T&C, I've decided against it.

They appear to be using the MMS network to push emails into the device and then charge MMS rates for each reply made. It sound like another 'revenue collector' to me, rather than a 'useful to the customer' improvement.

When I've got a device that can manage IMAP4 and web-based email such as Hotmail Live and Gmail - why bother to be charged 25p per reply via MMS?

Is there any technical reason Orange cannot use already proven push-email systems?

no technical reason but only to make more $$$ and make customers move away from them

sorry for the bashing but i had to - really its the only "marketing" way of doing things recently from orange.

never heard of this orange email but 25p per reply? cmon!! you can use your own pocket IE to check email for almost nothing or as you said using IMAP4

You'll not find me shying away from a bit of 'Orange bashing' :)

I wonder what the stats are regarding the use of MMS versus SMS? I know there are millions of texts sent everyday in the UK and perhaps they're looking for another way to market MMS?

I think they're asking a lot if they expect customers to pay 25p for every mail sent. I can't see it working.

neither can I my friend

cheaper to perhaps send a small email by SMS :) or via wifi hotspot if your phone has wifi :D lol

I guess it could be mainly for business customers but im sure they get better deals on their special tariff's?

Is this an attempt by Orange to bring text-to-email functionality to devices without built-in email? If so, do they really believe its a killer app for which people are willing to pay a premium? Maybe you could post the invitation letter so we can get a better idea.

Interesting, I've been registered for Trials for a good few years now, and this is the first offer I've had.

As I no longer have an Orange contract SIM, I'm not eligible.

BUT, since I've been using mobile email for about 5 years now on various devices, it does seem that Orange are just slightly behind the times with this one...

It had some real issues for the first few days, but seems to be a stable service now. I think they've disabled the SMS alerts that were configured for my Orange mail account. Had a few issues with the MMS's causing my phone to lock-up completely, but it seems to have stopped now. It is quite useful to have emails sent to my home mail server pushed reasonably quickly to my phone. And is a service I'd be interested in keeping going if 1) it stays free to receive them (no doubt they'll start charging thereby ruling it out for all non-business users) and 2) I hadn't already decided to ditch Orange and go with T-mobile's attractive data offers asap!

I am trialling it. It's better than the text alerts - as you get the full content of the mail - and as previous posters have suggested, you can use your orange.net pop account to reply.

As I have a 4smartphone exchange account on my Jamin for work emails, its quite nice to receive all personal emails to the phone free of charge - until they impose a charge for receiving!
