I like so many others have jumped ship from O to T-Mob after more than eight years. During this time, I have always had the same number and would love to take it with me. Trouble is, enticed by the fantastic Flext offerings from T-Mob (currenty 25% off for life), I have jumped while I still have 8 months left to run on O.

Is anyone here aware of a way I can get O to give up my number (supply PAC code) without me having to wait until Nov 2006? I am prepared to see out the contract, would just like my number now!

I am aware I can buy out of the contract, but as O will expect me to pay the remainder of my contract up front and without any discount for the inclusive monthly services I get as standard, this is not really an option.

sorry if i misunderstood but are you asking if it is possible to take/keep your existing number and give it to another network of your choice?

if so - then yes just phone cancellations and they will easily give you a PAC code without offering any new services to you or even asking you why you wish to leave

Yep, that's what I want to do - ie. take it to T-Mobile now I have taken a Flext plan.

Oh, if only it were that simple Tech. I still have 8 months to run of my contract, so I can't see Orange supplying a PAC that easily just yet!

I am looking for a way around this, if anyone has any ideas?

Drop to the lowest tariff and pay the minimum term off. They will then let you port out, but you're paying line rental for nowt...

Sure, I have dropped the tariff already but the minimum term will be 8 months of line rental will it not? If so, I am paying 8 months at my normal monthly rate but not seeing the benefit of the inclusive time I currently receive each month.

I would be willing to strike a deal with them whereby I pay the 8 months rental less the value of the inclusive time I would normally get but I very much doubt they will agree to that!

Very doubtful indeed.

I'm afraid the only (cheap) way to get your PAC is to lower to minimum talkplan, and buy yourself out. They will then supply you with the PAC.

They may charge you a nominal fee for requesting your PAC this early as well, i think its somewhere in the region of about ?30ish.

AS WELL? Good old Orange eh? ;-)

All this just adds up to confirm I made the right decision in jumping ship - even if it will cost me!

How about joining T-Mobile now, and just porting your Orange number in November.  If you have cross-network inclusive minutes and don't receive huge amounts of calls, you could set up a divert from your Orange handset to your new T-Mobile number.

Good plan! I hadn't realised the divert part of the call came out of your inclusive mins though?

I could be wrong - but I do believe that if the diversion would have been inclusive if dialled manually on the handset, then it'll be inclusive when via a divert.  So, if you have anytime cross network minutes, you should get free diversions up to the amount of minutes in your plan.

Alternatively, do as I did - put an answerphone message on your old phone giving your new number, put it to always divert to answerphone (ie. not even ring first) and you'll not get charged at all, as diverting to answerphone is non-chargeable.   Only issue is texts, as these don't get diverted.

Could be a viable option - although I have heard talk of a 'work around' that may just help me achieve my goal as far as number porting is concerned.

It's a little fidly but if I decide to roll with it I'll let you know how it goes...

I've recommended the Divert option to a couple of customers before, as I have with the Answerphone message one too - which seems like a more viable option as people will gradually start using your new number
