I think that they have a cheek asking for this!  

When I signed up back in 1996 there was no such charge.

I would happily pay by direct debit if they would let me change my date........when I was paying it by DD my bill would always come out a few days before payday and I would be hit with ?38 bank charges.

All my other direct debits let me choose my date so why not Orange!

Try asking them to change your BILLING date. I'm billed on the 15th which means, by default, they DD my a/c just after the 1st of the month.

It might be worth a try
