Tom Tom Navigator 6 freezing on Vario II

I have installed Tom Tom Navigator 6 on the Vario II. It works fine except every so often the screen freezes. Pressing the OK button on the handset and then selecting the Tom Tom icon on the today screen resolves the problem however this clearly can be dangerous when driving!

Has anyone else got this problem and found a solution?

I have the exact same problem - normally I press the msg button and then ok that screen and TomTom runs again or do what you have said.

It does not happen often and I find a soft reset before I launch TomTom seems to stop this problem. Not ideal I know but it does appear to make a difrance.

I am running a M3100 with a 1gb card in it.

Yep, exact same problem here too!

I've tried making sure all the POIs are switched off, i'll report back later when i've given it a proper try.

I've had same problem once or twice & resolved with OK button & TT icon method. But to be fair my M3100 freezes every other day anyway & I have to soft reset. I suspect that SPB Today is behind that. It only seems to happen when I get a text message. Some people have mentioned the speed of the sd card as being a problem. Loading the programme into main memory may solve it, but that's not possible with TTN6.I find it only freezes while entering destinations, ie: when it is searching database for matches as I type in the letters. It's never hung during use or while calculating route.

I've noticed this too and have so far only been able to remedy the problem by the method(s) described above.

Seems like a TT thing rather than a hardware thing (?)

My main gripe with my TTN6 is that it doesn't like running from a 2gb mini SD card I have - It is very hitty missy..........I've therefore resigned to running from the supplied 1GB card.

Has anyone griped to TomTom about this?

It is when entering destinations it'll hang, or browseing the map. Whilst it's actually navigating away though it performs great.

I've noticed this a few times on my M3100, mostly shortly after starting the program. Occasionally while navigating.

It isn't on the official TomTom compatibility list afterall

Mine does the same, ever since I "upgraded" the rom to the latest from S. Africa (see XDA Devs)

It was fine on the original suppied rom, thats where Im going back to. With that rom I could also run TT6 and CamerAware at the same time, I cant now!

Getting the same problem on my m3100 , emailed tomtom and called them as i got no reply back , and they know its a problem but i dont think they will fix it as they seem to be more interested in selling me a go system than sorting out the ppc problem :)

for what it's worth, turning the screen off/on solves this too. a bit easier to do without looking at the hermes.

The latest version of TT6 (6.1.0) solves this problem of locking up on the Hermes platform. However, ver 6.1 is not posted on the TomTom website, so you'll have to do a bit of fishing around to find it. Forum rules preclude me from posting the link here, but it's just a matter of replacing the TTnav.exe file with an updated one- if you don't already have a copy of TT6 installed, the updated file is of no use to you ;-)

Exactly the same problem on my M3100 too. I have only this week upgraded from an M600 on which it worked perfectly.

Mine freezes frequently during navigation mode, which is a pain. I'll try the soft reset before leaving work tonight to see if that helps.

I guess until TomTom officially start supporting the M3100, there's not a lot we can do. But in their defense I have found their online and telephone support to be quite good on the few occasions I've needed to use it.

(6.10) does not solve the problem. A few people reported it had, then after they tested it, the freezing problem remained. I tried (6.10) and can confirm it still freezes on a Vario II

TomTom 'support' refuse to discuss issues on the VarioII as it is not supported or recommended for the product. I was told to return it to the shop I bought it from if I had any problem.

I have always cured TomTom lockup by switching to Landscape and back again, not sure how I got into this habbit.

Well I am sure glad I am not the only one with this issue. It sure seems the simplest way to cure is using the on off button. A quick off and on again restores its a real frustration!

If anyone figures out a fix let us know! Btw- how many people can varify the 6.1 fix? i cant find a way to update at all... even with tomtom home?!

Does not configuring the GPS device to be managed by WM5, and then redistributing the data to TT via the Windows management tool not solve the problem maybe? I activated the GPS menu on my Vario 2 with the Fit4Cat tweaker, and just hooked up my QStarz GPS receiver to see if I could get it to work with Windows Live Mobile Search... Was easy as anything, set up a new Incoming port, a new outgoing port, picked up the device with a scan, set it up with the ports, bam. Chose the ports in WLM Search app, it found my location straight away and went right to where I was on the map. Very cool stuff.

Not got TT6 installed, but maybe installing TT 5.21 and doing that WM5 hack to get it on the device might work? I still use my old Alpine for TT5.21 :)

Just an update to this annoying problem!

I had to perform a hard reset over the weekend, and reinstalled all the software I had on my M3100 previously, including TTN 6.

At first TT worked like a dream, the display showed smooth movement along my route with no jerkiness or freezing whatsoever....

...until I reinstalled all my Pocketgpsworld speed camera POIs and ogg file notifications!

Now the problem is even worse than it was before. So could it be that the M3100 is struggling with all the POI data stored on the micro SD card?

Just a thought.

I'd better add my name to this issue as well.

Exact same, freezes after initial boot of TomTom and will only freeze on the menu screen ands not whilst on the 3D display. I used to think it was every time I tried to do the location, when ever I got to the filtering list it would freeze. But taking longer and using different menu options it happens as well.

It does only happen the once after booting TTN up as well, I could use the menu options as much as I like after the first freeze and it doesn't happen.

I clear it by hitting end call to go back to the today screen and either use voice command or just tap the TTN icon to go back to the already running prog and it works fine.

I'm wondering if it is all based on a bluetooth issue, only reason I'm thinking that is the BT issue with stereo sound and the fact that the vario2 staggers on CPU/mem usage.

I'm not convinced it's a Bluetooth issue.

I had 3 freezes whilst navigating within the space of 10 minutes on my way to work this morning! So I disabled all my POIs and hey presto TTN6 ran like a dream with no freezes whatsoever.

Just out of interest, does anybody use CameraAware in conjunction with TTN6? For example do they both run alongside one another, and if so does CameraAware run in the background, giving camera notifications and then disappearing back into the background afterwards?

Also like to add myself to list. I have just got an Orange M3100( via Ebay) and Tomtom 6 freezes in exactly the same way as described. Some interesting suggestions. I will try taking out the uneeded POIs and see if that improves it. I also have TT5 and was wondering if that would install and work. I do not need all the maps only GB and France. I did have a moan to TT support but to date no reply. Any further suggestions to sort the problem gratefully received

**PROBLEM SOLVED!** No more freezing and smooth navigation!

As I thought yesterday, the freezing issue appears to be due to too many POIs being enabled within the software. I have disabled ALL my POIs but left my POI warnings enabled - I thought that by doing this my speed camera warnings would also stop but the warnings are still working perfectly, and there have been no freezes and the 3D navigation view is smooth.

There are two ways of displaying POIs in TTN6. Firstly when enabled, they are visible as icons on the map, but only visible in the 3D navigation view if very close to the road. Secondly the software can be set to warn when close to a POI, either with a verbal warning of sound, and with an icon that appears in the top left of the screen. This system is independent of whether or not the POIs are enabled, and it seems to be this that is causing the problem.

I personally want accurate navigation without freezing, and verbal warnings of speed cameras - I do not need the POIs to be displayed on the map. On those occasions when I might find this useful (e.g. finding a cash machine or petrol station), I can enable them temporarily.

It is worth noting that warnings are only given when navigating a route, so to receive these warnings it is necessary to set a route before departure.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Travelled 130 miles this afternoon and unfortunately TTN6 froze 4 or 5 times so the issue is not completely solved, but this is a HUGE improvement - before it was virtually unuseable. Let's hope TomTom soon start supporting the Hermes variants and provide a fix.

After reading through yesterday I went in to the POI file on the storage card and removed all the individual POI,s. Have to report a big improvement in TT6 running on the 3100. Couple of freezes after starting up in the destination screen but no freezes while navigating. Biggest problem I have is it keeps trying to compute a route to the last destination when starting up and it will not store the Home location. Any ideas.

Mine does the same. I just clear the route before I exit the application.
