Check your firewall settings and also delete the partnership you had and create a new one.

Thanks for the help. I am afraid I am still having problems. when I connect the device the Active sync icon appears on the pc and tries to connect, if I r click and open the interface it says connecting and shows no partnerships. If I go files the the mobile device options are greyed out. I have tried connection settings and after attempting to connect it says cant find a device.

I have a Magician and a Wizard. My Magician has always connected with no problems at all but until today my Wizard has not connected. I have previously posted regarding this problem. Everything was either greyed out or would hang when attempting to connect the Wizard. Allowing access to my firewall or disabling the firewall failed to make any difference. Neither did a fresh install of Windows and AS on a brand new computer.
I closely inspected the USB cable- nothing appeared to be the matter with that, so I too have downloaded the beta AS 4.5. But today whilst in my loft, I came across my Magician box with the unused USB cable in it. I thought I'd give it a whirl, and yes you've guessed it...both devices now work (I still have to close the firewall for the Wizard though- but not the Magician!)
Just thought I'd post this in case I can stop someone else being driven mad
