Internet over WiFi or Data?

Ok so I just bought a Dash on Ebay, got a great deal on it too I must say :) So far Im really impressed. The keyboard is a little small for my large hands, but its workable and I like the phone.

My question is two part..

First how can I tell if I am accessing the internet through my WiFi connection (when Im connected at home or at work) or through the Tmobile Data connection. I am not paying for Tmobile Internet, but I can access the internet anywhere.. on the highway, with Wifi turned off... The thing is, for the most part when Im connected to WiFi it doesnt seem to be much, if any faster than when Im not. Is there a way I can tell which it is using? Or a way to set it to use Wifi?

And secondly, how much is Tmobile gonna be charging me for using their data network to get on the internet with no plan? Or is it some sort of screw up on their part and Im getting free internet? I would contact them and ask but Im afraid thats the case and I would lose it lol

Any help is appreciated!

I dont think you will be getting free gprs! You can wait for your next bill... but you might get a nasty surprise as out-of-bundle data can be very expensive.

Most WM devices show you that you are connected to mobile data with a G, E, U or 3G over the signal strength meter.

Actually, I was browsing through other sites and it seems that a lot of people are getting free data internet from Tmobile right now, and the explanation is that Tmobile is performing some sort of tests/upgrades in specific areas and they seem to open the flood gates while doing so. This was reported by several people that all said they experienced the free internet for a week or two and then it went back to normal.

Not really. If you don't purchase T-Mobile internet, you don't get it -- no metered useage for those without the service. If they're doing some testing and it's unrestricted in some locations, enjoy it while you can :)

I really would like the know how to tell the difference to being on wifi or not. I find that when the wifi is on and connected, i also see an "E" at the top meaning i'm on edge while wifi is connected. The only way i know of to make sure i'm on wifi is to turn off the data connection / phone in the connecting manager making only wifi connect (seems faster too when browsing tinytube). I'm also getting free basic wap tmo internet, but i'd like to be on my wifi, and keep my "phone on" to get calls.

Any clue?

the way to know if ur getting wifi is that the pagfes load alot faster and once u turn wifi on and connect..the phone will use it rather than use the data plan...so once u turn wifi on its gonna become the primary connection...lol at leaast im about 80 percent sure

The icon used to change when you were actually connected but it doesn't on my C600.

I asume you are in the USA not the UK? I stopped using WiFi on my Universal when I got unlimited 3G as WiFi drains the battery wery quickly and I didn't notice any speed difference - although WiFi is faster than GPRS.

I agree with thedoctor - I'm about 80% sure too!

Paul has an app that will turn off your data connection and if you are at all worried about being chatged for data I sugest you download and install it - you can then disable and re-enable data connections see http://www.modaco.com/New-FREE-Utility-t246171.html - I'm 99% certain it works on Smartphones as well as PPCs

Out of bundle data prices in the UK are horrendus - T managed to take off one data plan and not add the new one on my brothers phone, first we knew was when we got a taxt syaing "please call us as we will disconnect you due to high data usage if you don't" - turns out he'd run up a bill of over £500 (approx $1000) in less than a month as he had no bundle - they sorted it - but it goes to show how good his £12.50 / month plan is . And I only pay £5.63 for my data!

Good luck
