OEM integration specialist Jataayu has released a Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone browsers, named jB5, together with a community aimed at focusing development of the browser.

Available for download (for WM5 Smartphones or Symbian devices) at the jB5 website (registration required), the jb5 browser is free in it's current Beta phase. Here's why Jataayu think it's a bit special...

Personalize Wizard allows you to preserve values entered in form fields for future use. Thus pages containing form fields that need to be filled in frequently like login pages, query pages, etc, can be saved once and accessed without having to re-enter these fields again. Pages stored using Personalize Wizard will take you directly to the resulting page, thus bypassing the initial page where these fields would otherwise have to be entered.

A special folder called “Personalize  Wizard” folder will be created in Favorites folder in jB5. This folder  will contain special bookmarks created by Personalize Wizard.

Personalize Folder may be locked by a PIN (a 4-digit number) to avoid unauthorized access. PIN for Personalize Folder can be set by selecting Options->Settings on jB5’s main menu. On the Settings screen, scroll down and click on the “Manage  personalize Wizard PIN” link. Enter current PIN (if set previously) and the new PIN. Leaving the new PIN field blank, will unset the PIN allowing access to “Personalize Wizard” without validation.

Note: Personalize Wizard PIN  cannot be retrieved if lost. In the event you loose the PIN, you will have to  delete the Personalize Wizard folder completely. Doing so, will also delete  all the stored links as well.

Home Screen Favorite

jB5 has a unique feature where you can move some of your really favorite links to the home screen. This creates a separate entry on the home screen with a specific icon if available. Clicking on this link will directly launch jB5 and fetch the page. A maximum of 3 links can be configured on the home screen.

WAP Push

jB5 supports WAP Push messages. Two types of push messages – SI (Service Indication) and SL (Service Loading) are currently supported. The push inbox is integrated with the messaging application as an independent account type. Thus on installation of jB5 you will see a new messaging component called WAP Push among other components such as SMS, Email and MMS in the application.

I have been using for a couple of days.  It seems pretty good to me (on Samsung SGH-i320).  Loads quickly, no crashes so far and I like to format of the pages.  It also avoids all the annying website auto-reformatting to xHTML or WAP which happens with other browsers - even some which are supposed to report themselves as full html....only problem is it is missing HTTPS in the version I have installed, but I note this is deliberate in the current release.  It is not perfect but I think I prefer it to the MS default browser.

What's different about the formatting? Can you upload any screenshots?

Indeed, it is faster than IE at formatting pages, but when loading a page, the browser refreshes it at least 3 times, thus making total waiting time longer than IE in most case, with complex pages.
It has been crash free and slowdown-free as of now (which I can't say about IE: after 2-3 pages it's almost hanged and hangs the phone too).

However, i find that IE renders most pages better.

This browser is quite sluggish on my Moto Q, but it does seem to show some promise.  I'll track its development to see what it offers in future releases.

I tried it briefly but I didn't care for it. It does tend to load a page more than once (on mdigger it would load the wap style version then the more colorful version). And I couldn't really get it to display the more complicated pages more correctly than pie (I used woot as my bench mark).  But like a couple others have said it shows promise, so I'll try out the next build.

One feature I wish it had (and opera mobile and mini had as well) is the ability to import favorites from pie.
