My Vario II running WM6

Well having read the XDA Dev threads about the new WM6 roms for the Hermes I thought I'd give it a try. The first one was pretty good, but I was having a few lock ups.

I've now installed the lastest LVSW version (the 'more space' version that frees up the extended rom) and I've got to say it's awesome. The phone is much much faster than ever before and seems really stable - certainly much better than before.

I read somewhere that the Hermes was supposed to have WM6 (indeed the OS was partly built using the hermes as a test platform) but the OS wasn't finished in time.

Anyway, I love it and would recommend this easy and quick upgrade, but remember your mileage may vary!

can you go back to the original rom if something goes wrong or you need to send it back? (yes i'm rather new at this...)

If your provider has released a rom for the phone, usually yes, if not (as in the case of my provider t-mobile) then No.

I have WM6 Black v1.2 on my phone, and it is very fast compared to the version that came with the phone, the big plus of Black is that it only upgrades the OS and leaves your other roms (radio etc.) alone.

I would recommend looking for the current version of hard-spl before installing any rom upgrades on your phone as it can help prevent bricking it. Make sure you do a LOT of reading and understand what you are trying to achieve before attempting any kind of upgrade though as it really is quite easy to screw your phone up.

There are a number of ROMS available now including a few that will just update the OS. It is def. worth wading through the info on the site before deciding what to do, but I've not read af anybody that managed to brick their phone. The update procedure was as simple as downloading the update, connecting the phone to AS4.5 and running the update.......it did everything else ;)

The update I installed only came out a few days ago, so maybe the procedure is simpler now?

Oh come off it, if people were passing rapidshare links to ROMs back and forth then I'd agree with you, but discussion of what people do with devices they've purchased has nothing illegal to do with it. They might be voiding their warranty, but they're paying for their device with their own money, it's up to them what they do with it. What people do in the privacy of their own homes, etc...

I think the discussion is entirely relevant to a mobile phone discussion forum!

it may well be however WM6 is not entirely released yet and is just an illegal download which you should not have already obtained anyway. Remember, its your device and if you screw it up - your own fault ;)

Hi, if you do want to make the jump, then you'll find that flashing Hard-SPL 1.13 your best option; it ignores fake bad NAND blocks and so stops you corrupting the device whilst also allowing radio repairs with a corrupt CID etc.

most of the custom packages are being bundled with it anyway now ;)

Olipro is being rather humble, as it's hard work that has brought us Hard-SPL. :(

I find the censorship of the discussion of the WM6 rom a little draconian. I could understand if the s/w is something that will be charged for but WM6 will be FREE. So it's more a case of a premature discussion which will be ok to partake in later this year when it is released. ;)

"you can discuss murder, just don't commit it" I think that's the general philosophy; nobody is breaking any laws by discussing it, the paranoia is silly.

in other news, Hard-SPL 1.30 is released, head over to XDA-Devs for it, enjoy.

and someone please tell the mods or whoever they are to update the darn packages with Hard-SPL that they've released... please?

Good work Olipro :D

At the risk of being spotted by the thought police......a quick update.

My Vario II is now the most resposive and stable it's ever been............way better than the Wizard was also. This is how it's meant to be.

;)

Very happy. Let's see how long it takes T-Mob to bring out their own version of WM6.......possibly never <_<

I suppose even if they do it'll probably be overloaded with all sorts of corporate rubbish. Think I'lll be sticking with the home-cooked versions.

WM6 on my Vario II is blindingly fast, and I am very grateful to Olipro for hard spl as I tried an upgrade before he released it and bricked my phone. Since I had it replaced and put SPL on it its been perfect with all rom's I've flashed on it.

Thanks Olipro.

As for T-Mobile, I wont hold my breath.............

A question to those that have done this 'upgrade', do you have to enter your T-Mobile internet/gprs/mms/etc... settings manually afterwards, or can you use the files in the T-Mobile extended rom part?

If you can make use of the T-Mobile extended rpm, which files should you run to get your internet/mms back up and running?

thanks (in advance)

NOTE: This refers to the Orange rom.

I use the Orange_MMS cab from the original extended rom to restore MMS settings, and the Orange UK internet settings CAB direct from the xda-developers forum to restore internet.

It's important to note that SOME roms, will flash your extended rom too - so make sure you backup first. WM6 Black Edition currently flashes ONLY the os rom, and leaves the radio, bootloader, and extended rom alone.

I entered my t-mob gprs setting manually (very simple). Not sure about the MMS settings as I'm not sure what they are! If i had the mms_cab I'd use it!

My first post. :)

As I am too chicken to flash my phone, for now.

I asked T-Mobile about an update for my phone (MDA Vario 2)

Looks as if they are testing, but don't give a time scale.

Had a reply from T-Mobile about windows mobile 6.

Good Afternoon Rob

Thank you for your email regarding windows mobile 6.

At present we are currently testing updates for windows mobile 6, the outcome of the tests will determine whether or not we release an update, no timescale available.

Kind regards

Jann Lapsley

I hear it fixes lots of issues with the current version of mobile 5, ie lockups and crashes.

I see you have this available for other phones.

I have made my views clear before.

Now that the latest ROMS also include SDHC card support (and people are using 4gb cards in their phones) there is even more incentive.

As I am with Orange, I will probably be waiting for months on end for them to release it (if at all). (Mind you, at least they released a WM5 update)
