SPV M700 4G mini SD detection problem

Hi,

I've just purchased a 4G mini-SD card for my SPV M700 (from MobyMemory). I copied the contents of my 2G card to the 4G card and everything seemed to work ok. I then copied over another 2Gs worth of mp3 files to the new card, but now the phone doesn't detect the card!! ;) According to the description of the 4G card on the MobyMemory it IS compatible with the SPV M700.

Could this be an addressing issue? Does anyone know of any problems with the SPV M700 in relation to 4G mini-SD cards?

When I get home tonight I will try to remove the extra 2Gs worth of music and see if the device detects the card again.

Cheers,

M

I had problems with using a MobyMemory 4GB mini-SD in my iMate Jam - equivalent to SPV M500.

It seemed to be okay but an installation caused a corruption and I had to reformat the card. Touch wood all is fine now although the phone can drag its heels accessing things after a soft reset. I'm a bit worried about Today screen items being installed on the card but the slight delays are only a minor inconvenience.

How much spare capacity did you leave after loading the MP3s ? Always best to leave some breathing room, so I'm told.

I've been using one in my MDA for about a month now and the one thing I do is when I load a large amount or large number of files on it I pull it out of the phone and stick it in a card reader and defragment it with windows defragmenter no matter how little it says it's fragmented. There's also a great little program called pocket mechanic professional that will defragment your card in your phone plus do a whole lot of other things associated with your SD card including scan disk and benchmarking the card. It's the one program that I will probably actually buy once the 30 day trial runs out.

Strange? Im using the (un-branded??) and mine works fine?

I had some detection issues when I first bought it however but thats because I was using it in fat32 but after I formatted it into fat16 all has been good since?.

ALthought im noticing some MASS battery drain issues or is that just me? Im using it in the MDA Vario and I can confirm that it isnt SDHC because it works in all my smartphones and pocketpc's and mobymemory confirmed that it wasnt.

Dont known if this was useful, but also can anyone tell me if their having battery drain issues with this card?

Sam

I have mine formatted in fat 32 with no problems in my vario. I have been having battery issues, but I think I tracked that down to ActiveSync staying active after I disconnect or at least when I shut it down through the memory module my battery seems to drain a whole lot slower. Before I figured that out my battery would drain at least 10% per hour without even being used. Now, after I shut it down, when I remember to shut it down, it only drains about 2% an hour. Now if I could just figure out how to get it to automatically close on it's own after being disconnected I'd be happy (at least for a few minutes anyway ;) )

I was just thinkin that the Activesync thing might be your problem too. I just had to do a hard reset 2 days ago and it didn't fix the problem so I thought maybe it was a vario glitch. I can tell you that earlier tonight I was mowing grass and was listening to mp3's off of my SD card for 2 1/2 hrs at full volume and my battery only drained 7%. That doesn't seem like too bad of a power drain from the card.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback. When I got home a tried to read the card using a usb card reader and it came up prompting me to reformat the card!! I guess a corruption occured when I was copying the music file across. I did a reformat and copied the files over again. It seems to be working ok now, so I can confirm the 4G miniSD card from MobyMemory works fine with the SPV M700 ;)

One thing I did notice, I had problems when trying to access the miniSD card using an SD adapter. Not sure if this is a common problem or just an issue with my card reader.

Cheers,

M

I would imagine that might be caused by dust or grease on the contacts.

The only problems I've had with mine have been resolved with a bit of blowing and waggling !

I can tell you that earlier tonight I was mowing grass and was listening to mp3's .....

That has completely spoiled the image I had of you from your avatar ;)

Pocket Mechanic is a top recommendation though. Will take me a bit of reading to understand the results but looks like a good piece of kit.

lol. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. If I could get away with never mowing grass again in my life it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Unfortunately I don't think my neighbors would appreciate that.

Hmmmm interesting, I read on another forum just now that once the 4GB card exceeded 2GB (which is the recommended capacity), problems started to occur, but it seems it's working fine for you now...but, is it still working?

I've just spoken with Mikeyz and he has informed me that he spoke with HTC tech support and has discovered that 4GB mini-SD is not supported.

Just to confirm what OzzMosiz said, I rang HTC tech support yesterday and they informed me that there is a problem with Mobile 5.0 in that it does not support 4G mini-SD cards.

I had the 4G card working for a while but twice now the card has corrupted. I never have this problem with my 2G card.

Keep this in mind if you are thinking of buying a 4G card!!!

Hmmm, I think that is a typo. 12G mini-SD cards don't actually exist ;) . I think that should read 2G for the mini-SD.

Yeah, I would agree with that. If you speak to HTC Europe direct they would only ever state that they only test with 2GB mem cards, so anything greater in size is not guaranteed to work.

Also they have a nice disclaimer on their website stating that they can not confirm that the information on their website is correct!

This problem isn't just confined to the m700. I suspect that there are a lot of people out there with a 4Gb Mini SD Card which isn't even any good as a paperweight on account of how light they are :D myself included ;) . Have a look on e-bay and there are lots for sale, all claiming to be compatibile with an awful lot of devices which just don't support them. I understand there is also an issue with sdhc standards. I've seen reputable sites where it has been explained that there is no such thing as a 4Gb SD (or mini SD) card as SD only works up to 2Gb. Anything over 2Gb has to be SDHC which as has been pointed out is not yet supported by ppc s. Perhaps a news item should be posted to warn the greater community?

From what I gathered from the all the reading up that I've done on 4 Gb mini SD's is that while there actually is such a card they do not conform to the standards as defined by the SD card association and therefore not recognized as an SD card. I guess that means they are real but they aren't at the same time. A real "recognized" 4 Gb miniSD would actually be a miniSDHC by their standards. The problem there is is that from what I've read also most, if not all, of our phones will not read SDHC cards anyway although I'm sure some of the newer phones on the market probably do but I couldn't tell you which ones do or don't. I also don't know if there could possibly be a software update that would change this in the future or not, but it would be nice if there was.

What I can tell you is that after about a month and a half of having one in my MDA, a couple of days ago mine decided to do pretty much the same thing as a lot of others have had problems with and that is that a bunch of files decided to up and disappear on me. The files that disappeared on me were all movie files that were all at least 100 megs or more, everything else was fine though. I still decided to copy the files that were still there over to my hard drive, reformatt the card, then copy it all back but I'm guessing it will eventually do it again.

My advice to anyone thinking about buying a 4 Gb card though is that you're probably better off just buying you 2 2 Gb cards, copying your card installed software etc. to both cards and going from there.

Xeno - Where were you when I was busy bying a 4Gb card? ;) I'm now waiting for 2 2Gb cards to be delivered, having worked out, through bitter experience that just as you advise it is the best way ahead. Perhaps the salient points on this thread should be extracted and made a sticky somewhere very visible? It would have saved me the cost of a 4Gb card and a lot of frustration trying to get the F*^%@# to work !

Unfortunately I was sitting here hoping that I was going to be one of the lucky few that had a 4 Gb card that stayed working. I guess though that since all that disappeared was a bunch of movie files and not anything important I have been lucky so far. ;)

The down side to 2 2 Gb cards though is that either you have to continually update the 2nd card with the first every time you install something new or have files that you need to be current on both. Either that, or figure out a way to carry around the second card with you all the time in a way that it wont get damaged. I definitely don't trust putting one in my wallet.

I was just thinking, I know this is off topic, but how come cell phones have word completion software incorporated into them for sending txt msgs etc. but no ones ever bothered to incorporate that in to the internet browsers for computers? It would make things so much easier for those of us that suck at typing. :D

I have done a bit of reading, apparently, the Dopod Test ROM caters for 4GB MiniSD cards a lot better than the Orange ROM. I'm not sure about the latest HTC ROM though, but apparently people have also been getting success with MiniSDHC cards with the Dopod Test ROM. 4GB MiniSDs are only around £30, so I'll give it a go and let you know of the happenings.

I just have to wait to get the M700 first..
