With my Audiovox SMT5600 you were able to support a minimal backlight setting that kept the screen from going completely dark so that you didn't have to press a key to "wake up" the phone but could still view screen info after inactivity (or simply talking on the phone for a while).

I just received my Blackjack and the backlight setting offers 5 levels of brightness but the lowest one ("1") provides a fairly high level of brightness which contributes significantly to battery usage.  Does anyone have a suggestion?

Unfortunately you're not able to change those brightness levels AFAIK.
