Turn off GPRS on E650

Hi everyone,

Just got my new E650 on Orange upgrade. Very pleased.

It's looking quite special actually, and I managed to get it up and running with my WPA-enabled network.... I think. I don't have a data package with Orange, and I don't want to use GPRS (only WiFi) - can't be a hundred percent sure whether i was using GPRS when I thought i was using the Wi-fi.

So my question is:

How can I turn off GPRS access, so that I am only using Wi-fi?

I have changed the GPRS + GPRS WAP settings to "Work" rather than "internet", as I don't have a push-email account. Is this a good way?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

I'm loving your work Paul!!! ;)

I think I'd rather wait for the "nodata" fix (the Modaco_Do_New cab works great!!). Will this program keep the GPRS off even after switching the phone on and off? Sorry about all the questions...

This phone is growing on me by the minute. But I'll give it a few days before I make my mind up.

to resolve this problem:

Go to: HKLM-->Comm-->ConnMgr-->Planner-->Settings-->SuspendResume

and delete ~GPRS! value.

This value was couseing phone to keep active gprs connection by any meanings. When you delete it, red button will close the connection again

Just been on to Orange tech support regarding GPRS random turn on and 1: they say it can't happen (yes it can) and 2: They told me that I cant use wifi to connect to my home network without GPRS being enabled cos it uses it. I always thought that wifi and GPRS were two seperate technologies and if not why have wifi on the phone in the first place?

Perhaps I am being thick but any help is apreciated as I don't see the point in paying for GPRS to connect to a home wireless network.

what an absolute crock of crap!!!! you certainly don't need to have a GPRS session active to use WiFi.

the GPRS is activating on my E650 at least a couple of times a day and 9 times out of ten i cant switch it off with the Comm Manager - i have to start an IE session and then it will recognise the the connection. come to think of it, maybe its just a screen bug.. the little G comes on but that might not mean anything is going on..

Anyone got a GPRS monitor to check?

I thought it to be a load of crap too until they disconnected my GPRS settings at their end and I can no longer connect to my wireless network. The wireless connection doesnt even stay on now. Select it for connection and 2 seconds later it switches off again????

not wanting to sound smarmy but how can 'they' clear out your GPRS settings?

i reckon there is something more amiss with your handset than a GPRS/WiFi link being at fault - mainly cos there isnt one!! A GPRS session runs with the same radio as the phone part of your device and the WiFi is entirely different - ones at 2.4GHz (wifi) and the other at 1.8GHz (assuming Orange in the UK) as well as completely different modulation/protocol construction. Although they both provide a network resource to the handset, the operation of one is totally independant of the other...

All I can report is what Orange said to me. It wasn't a case of them clearing out my GPRS settings. What they did was stop my account from being able to use it. When they did this I got a sim update which stopped the GPRS from working but it has also affected my wifi for some reason too. I agree with you that there must be something amiss with my handset and I am waiting for Orange tech support to get back to me regarding it. Since my last post the wifi has started to work again and now connects to the network but like the GPRS before it decides to switch itself on and off randomly too.

I don't mind anyone being smarmy as long as it's constructive to solve problems which you seem to be trying to do and any help is always apreciated  .

Try this: Pull off your sim of the phone. Turn it On, (yes you can run Windows Mobile without SIM) , then try to scan the wifi network , and try a conection.

Maybe you have to put the phone mac adress (if it has one) into your mac filter in your Internet Provider modem settings (if you use a modem router) , or just verify the wep key is correct.

I'm looking for the same thing, but I don't want to lose the option to turn on GPRS. What I basically want it something that allows me to switch off GPRS in my day to day life but will allow me to switch it on when I need to (i.e. I'm out and about and don't have access to wifi but would still like to use the web/get my email)

Many thanks in advance

P.S Paul, your .cabs have been brilliant, it's made such a difference, I just put up with the orange branding on my old C550 but this makes my new shiny toy even more shiny! :P

Knew I should have searched harder, there is a thread on this board explaining how to create a 'No GPRS' fake internet connection that you can set as your GPRS connection, obviously it wont connect but it's the work of a minute to switch back to Orange Internet. This will do me! (Unless of course anyone can suggest a neater way!)

Hey Folks!

I've been playing around with the settings in my E650, having also noticed the "random GPRS connecting" phenomenon, and have found out what causes it - in the Time & Date settings, there is an option to automatically detect and adjust timezone. If you turn this feature off, the phone will not keep dialling home to update the time.

Hope this helps......

I recently took my phone into a different time zone and I deliberately didn't manually adjust the time. It didn't automatically adjust the timezone or the current time for me, despite this setting being on.

Are we sure that this setting doesn't simply adjust for daylight saving time automatically? I mean, to be capable of adjusting timezone would need some sort of GSM service, surely? How would it do this?

Ive checked with Efficasoft GPRS Traffic Montior on my Vodafone v1415 (aka E650). When you have a active wifi session and are still connected to GPRS pocket IE will use the faster by default.

I have my pocket IE set 'Automatically Detect Settings'.

Thanks

Hello,

Mine too but only after a email or other usage of GPRS. The in use indicator stays on until I reboot. I have shut down the messaging task and it still says GPRS in use.

I don't get it. The G at the top off the phone will stay active to 'indicate' gprs is available if you want to use. It doesn't mean it's being used. This is always the case just the same as the normal phone signal strengh (or the word orange) indicates you have access to the network even when you're not on a call.

In comm manager try switching phone off,the radio will have an x next to it,then turning wi-fi on.

Just tried it and it works. Which is the way it's supposed to.

Hope that helps.

Isn't GPRS on only if the a 'G' above the signal strength is visible?

I get the little g appearing also, and in comm manager it says that GPRS is already off, and to get rid of it I need to make a gprs connection and close it or turn the phone radio off in commmanager and then back on again.

It appears to happen after I disconnect from an active sync connection.

Not certain but it may only happen if the PC does not have internet access I need more testing to confirm this.

The G along the top of the screen (usually around the middle) indicates when you have GPRS signal.

The G above the signal strenght meter indicates you are connected to GPRS.

NOTE: When you are connected to GPRS you are not nessecarily sending and receiving data, the nature of GPRS means that it only sends packets when it needs it.

Thanks

I used to think that it was still connected (or reconnected) when the little "G" appeared by the signal bars - but this seems to just be a cosmetic issue that needs to be fixed. I was recently in an area with an EDGE network and made a connection (and got a little "E"), I then travelled back to an area with no EDGE, just GPRS and the "E" was still there.
