Very loose keyboard

Hi. My S710 keyboard is very loose when closed. I've heard reports about the Orange SPV 650s being a little better. Has anyone else had this? It feels like its about to drop off. I'm quite tempted to dismantle and try and tighten it up if that's possible. Anyone tried this?

Gareth.

Mine's loose too. Noticeable 1-2mm wobble. Overall feels a bit cheap & nasty. Not a gret upgrade from my SP5...battery life poor...miss my dedicated Message key too.

Don't bank on it

I've had a 5th since that picture, and this one feels really poorly built. The screen/keypad secton rocks up and down if I press gently on the left then the right side of the keypad, and it moves a few mm to the left when I do simple things like take it out of my pocket.

I did ring Orange and the guy told me it sounded normal, but a few of the previous ones I had were much better.

I think that's a common issue of this phone. Had mine only for three days, then sent it back, because I don't want to have a phone that's build quality is all that bad. When I held mine in closed condition on the back part, the part with the keypad was so loose, that it hang down for 1,5mm or so.

But there are some user, who don't have this problem. So it'll be luck to get a phone with good build quality...

No loose keyboard here, build quality is very good (it amazed all my friends with Nokia phones) but battery life could be better (two days with mild use of calls and internet and heavy organizer use).

I just ordered one, i really hope i didnt waste $500, cause i wont use it if its loose and wobbly.

guys, as I said before, the HTC S710 is very well built, along with all their products.

However the tolerance of this model has been designed to accomodate a slight keyboard wobble. Everyone has it. period!

There is nothing wrong with the keyboard being a bit loose. There are plenty other keyboard products that have the same wobble (Sony Mylo, Samsung E800, etc). If it is really wobbly then I would get another one, but just note that NO HTC S710/E650/Dopod C500 has a tight keyboard.......

Sorry, but that's definetly not correct.

I had three S710 here. One of them had an absolutely perfect slider. No wobble or anything like that.

The other two were much worse. A lot of wobble between the upper and lower part and you rotate the upper part about 2 mm when closed.

So please stop talking about all S710 having this loose keyboard.

I told HTC about the two devices which weren't well built. First they told me that this is normal for this device. After I told them that I can compare these two to a perfect built one, they suggested me to send the two defect! devices to the vendor to get them repaired.

So I wouls suggest to all of you to write a mail to HTC and tell them about it. Maybe they can do something.

it depends what you call being loose. Most S710s are tight when purchase, but develop a very slight wobble after a few weeks usage. no one has reported that their S710 remains tight. If anyone's has, perhaps they can say that here.

Like I said, it doesn't bother me. A big movement would though.

my second one that went back to O for naff quality of the in-call speaker had a great keypad/screen. No movement at all.

I think the issue isn't necessarily they develop a bit of movement after a few weeks, the ones i've had have all have movement straight out of the box.

Maybe it's because these have already been played with by Orange when they add their ROM's to them or something.

I think i'll try and get my digi-cam and take a video so people can see what I'd call excessive play. Maybe then someone can tell me if there's are the same or not.

I have bought my S710 last Friday in Belgium.

As mentioned earlier in this post, I have a very loose keyboard.

I have made a video of it :

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4508994521500527563

I have complained about it in the shop where I have bought it.

They have opened in front of me 2 others new S710 boxes.

Both of them had the same problem.

My conclusion was : This Smartphone seems to designe for the left hand people !

People from others french mobile forum confirms to me that they have the same problem.

Based on my video, if you have the same problem than me, does somoene had the chance to fix or to replace it by an other one recently ?

Thanks,

Lennik

I'm left handed, and the screen sliding out to the left seem more natural to me

However, the free play on the keypad would affect both left and right handed users i'd guess. I just don't like the way I can feel the keypad section rocking about when I type on the keypad. Just picking it up is usually enough to get it to rock about too.

But like the last poster mentoned, I checked a couple in a few Orange shops and they all had some free play to some extent. I guess those with the nice tight ones are the lucky ones.

The phone was specifically designed this way. I believe they made it this way so it is easier to open the slider with one hand. Also to make the phone stay closed and not open to easily. If you slide out the keyboard and flip it over. Look in the two channels/tracks that the slider operates on. On the top side/opposite to the earpiece you can see the metal strip going along the channel but then stopping a bit short. If you compare it to the other side you can see that the other channel, opposite to the keyboard, has the metal strip going completely to the end. Having the gap in the metal at the top would cause the bottom to rock slightly back and forth. I do however not mind the rocking. The phone has an all together solid feeling and there isn't any noticable rocking when the keyboard is slid out. If anyone wants to open theirs up and see if they can add some

I don't believe they were 'designed' to not be nice and snug, and have the keypad area rocking around while you are pressing the keys. Especially as previously mentioned, some people (including one handset I had) seemed to have a perfectly fine one.

Also saying there isn't any noticeable movement when the keyboard is slid out isn't a viable point, as it's held out against the spring mechanism (and is also the same direction the free play being reported by users).

Even with that said, when my keyboard section is slid out, there is free play on the screen/kepad section of the phone. Again, this is just from the microphone end (the left side as viewed when horizontal) of the phone, the other end (the right side) end is fine.

I also find that this 'design' shall we call it, makes the internal speaker vibrate a little. Also when the handset is set to vibrate, when a call is received the whole top half vibrates fairly noisily (first one to say it's meant to vibrate gets a slap ) like it's the case vibrating. Holding the top half while it's vibrating stops the noise so it seems to confirm the theory.

When I went in to Orange today to get mine, I specifically asked for one that was tight.

And have to say the one I got so far is perfect !

correct.

this phone is not a snug design.

however, it is the BEST phone I have every had.

How would I improve it ? a bit thinner, made of stainless steel and a heat coil to boil water so it can make cups of tea for me.

Mine S710 as well has a very loose keyboard, too bad because all other aspects of this phone are very well built. Am considering getting a replacement, but thinking I will try to live with it, and maybe HTC in the future will correct this issue, and users like me can get it fixed.

Have made a video to illustrate the problem, it can be found here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24ZaGg5z45Q

Also let mere hear if it is just me who are picky, it is my first slider phone for years, and don't really know how and when the slider is considered loose or not.

Really like this phone, and even if the slider system will not be better, would not consider getting a refund, QWERTY keyboard is not all phones with that feature, and have waited loong time for some one to compete with Nokia E70, and make a QWERTY keyboard in a "normal" not touch screen Smartphone, think that HTC has got it right, if it was not for the little loose slider the QWERTY keyboard is overall good to use, and landscape mode have bean a missing feature of my old Qtek 8300.

Just for fun, check out the screen compared to Qtek 8300:

Man how nice the screen is on S710, more colours, more brightness, a BIG improvement ...
