Well look what the courier just dropped off... an Eten X500+!

Packing the same specs as the Eten X500 (400MHz processor, WiFi, GPS) in the same ultra thin body but with an improved camera and ground breaking 2.8" VGA screen, the Eten X500+ breaks new ground in the world of compact Pocket PCs. The X500+ is available in the smart black shown here, or silver a-la-X500.

I'll be putting it through it's paces over the next few days, but in the meantime, feel free to hit me with any questions you have about the unit!

P

PS Don't even THINK about asking me whether they've fixed the T-Mobile GPRS issue on this handset :P

This device looks interesting with the VGA screen.

I'd appreciate the views of anyone who's used a 2.8" VGA screen for web browsing - how much of an improvement is it over a QVGA screen at 2.8"?

This could be a big factor in my choice of next PDA. The Kaiser looks ideal, it's just the lack of VGA that's bothering me.

The OS is Windows Mobile 6 Professional (Pocket PC).

P

Thanks. :P

But I'm not stupid. I know that. I think to the OS and build version number, not the name of the OS.

What is 640x480 video playback like? Does it have a Qualcomm coprocessor so that it can handle 640x480 vid?

What is this tmobile issue? I'm thinking about getting the QVGA version of this (Pharos PTL600) and I'm on Tmobile USA. The QVGA version is WM5 so I don't know if this bug would be an issue or not?

Lemme know before I gather up USD$500for it.

GPRS doesn't work on T-Mobile UK... I believe T-Mobile USA is fine.

It does feel pretty snappy, definitely quicker than a 200MHz device.

Not tried video playback as yet...

Gotta say, the VGA does look quite sexy

P

Hi Paul, does it make a significant difference when web browsing vs QVGA?

It does make quite a difference, particularly in Opera. I'll try and do some comparison screens...

P

Thanks Paul. Looking forward to seeing the results of the comparison. I've been using Opera for a while on a 3.7" VGA screen (Acer n311) and have been pleased with it.

Thanks for the info, Paul...

I presume that there is still no compatibility with "HC" type microSD cards, i.e. over 2GB ?

I'd really like a device that I can stuff with both TomTom maps AND music !

Any chance of doing a battery test? The one that I've seen for a few devices is to play music constantly (something on repeat I assume) with the backlight forced to stay permanently on at maximum brightness. Apparently the X500 got about 10.5 hours of play time (which with the backlight on all the time is mightily impressive). I'd be really interested in knowing how the X500+ compares in some sort of head-to-head battery test with the X500.

Hi Paul

Is there a review coming on the x500+???

Like others I am very interested in hearing some hands-on details of this device.

There is, yes, i'm still working with Eten to fix this T-Mo GPRS problem, so it may well be when we've sorted that out.
