Guest frottage Posted August 22, 2007 Report Share Posted August 22, 2007 I have just renegotiated my orange contract and couple of SPV650's on the way im hapyish with the mins and texts deal offered but unhappy with the data offer O tell me they can offer me the following data bundles 10mb bundle £7 25Mb bundle £14 400Mb bundle £45 all prices ex VAT these cannot be shared between my two handsets - need to be added to each individual handset Sadly I have no option but Orange, as the coverage in my area from the other 3 is SHITE however ive seen "web and walk" and heard of a mythical Orange £8 unlimited tariff can someone shed some light on whats going on ? (unless you like hefty bills) last month for example - I used 20mb data without a bundle and they charged me £65 for it if i had any option what-so-ever I would change to another provider. I have had my orange handset with them since 1993 - 15 bloody years - you would think that counts for something in the loyalty stakes - but obviously not. I think they have lost the plot lately. I was today again quoted the standard bundle prices - namely £8 - 10 Mb £16 - 25 Mb £52 - 400 Mb £88 - 1000 Mb However constant pressuring I did get a guy to investigate their "unmetered" products - £5 for 1000Gb of off peak data per month (if you use any data between 7am and 7pm you will be charged £1.50 per meg - although there is a limit of £1.50 per day charge. Alternatively there is the unmetered (what a joke) anytime product for £8 a month. I say its a joke because although Orange claim it is unmetered it actually has a "fair use policy" capping it at 30MB - any use above 30Mb in a month will simply be blocked. As has been mentioned before - if you have any options at all (i dont - due to coverage issues) I would advise the excellent T-mobile flext packages with web-and walk In case anyone wants to get the £8 30Mb deal - as I have ( its still better than buying a normal bundle ) you have to quote the orange data product name "Sunrise". The guy had to search for quite a time before coming back and telling me about sunrise - im sure this info will be of use to someone - maybe this info should be move somewhere else on the site. I just got my first smartphone/PDA today and it's a SPV M700 on orange... i did some research online and went into the shop as needed a new phone in a rush, so thought the shop was the best effort at next day phone deal. I asked in-store about the £8 30 MB bundle and the store reps knew absolutely nothing about it and the magazines/catalogues in-store did not have it listed at all! anyway long story short, they phone up customer services and they just tack it onto the contract (don't know about PAYG) at £8 monthly. It's ideal for picking up emails and some light web browsing but noone could tell me what happened if i was to go over the 30MB limit.... not ideal but went for it anyway!! i have only had it a day so i'll post back in a week ro so when i get some use on it. There was a lot of 'misinformation' prior to its release suggesting it was unmetered, but Orange have never claimed that; all they say is that it is 'unrestricted' in terms of being available at all times of the day. Usage above 30MB in nay month is charged at £1.50 per MB for the 1st 15MB, then £1 per MB thereafter. I wasn't aware that the £1.50 per day cap applied to this tariff- I was told that only applied to PAYU data. You can select OW Capped as an option in your 'Bundles' but if you do that it disables the £8 bundle, as you can only have one Data option selected. Orange CS are still totally confused about data, and many shop staff are worse. They have absolutely no training on the matter, so everyone gets a different interpretation. This seems completely the wrong way round! Are we sure they haven't simply made a typo in the terms and conditions and it should say fair use of 30MB per day and up to 1000MB per month? This definitely needs to be clarified properly before people get charged a lot of money for going over 30MB a month. Any usage beyond this limit during the month will be charged at your standard service plan rates. But I applied for it during the magic six week period last summer an am on panther 75 with a spend of over £100 a month. I actually only use 45mb a month though. Guest Neil5459 Posted September 19, 2007 Report Share Posted September 19, 2007 I think the T&C are pretty clear, though not very helpful ;) The 30MB per month cap is to prevent too much daytime use- times when the Orange network is stretched to capacity by voice calls; if the usage was unlimited for daytime data, the system simply wouldn't cope. If anyone has tried to use even GPRS in places like the City of London at rush hour times you'll see what I mean! The Icon shows 3G, E or H, but data trickes in at about 15-23kbps and there are long pauses. The caveats about streaming, VOIP, IM etc are totally superfluous- 30MB doesn't go far with those services anyway. It makes more sense for the Off Peak plan, as they don't want users congesting the networks with streaming data. It seems crazy that T-Mobile can offer these services and still make a profit; I can only assume that until Orange improve the overall signal infrastructure to reduce cell congestion, nothing will change. Probably because there are 1000's of people in London on wnw and only about five of us on O's unlimited. Just because the two networks have taken different approaches to data charging doesn't make either of them right or wrong. Do heavy data users spend more or less on voice?
