Hi,

I dont have any data minutes on my mobile tariff.

I want to set up Skype on my mobile but ensure that all connection is over the wifi connection and not via GPRS.

What is the best method of ensuring this. Can i turn off GPRS? If so, how?

Thanks

Hi Neil,

thanks for the reply and link to Bandswitch. Ive downloaded the program but am not sure what im doing! All i appear to be able to do is turn the GSM off! Are there any pointers to using this software? Or instructions?

The 1st page is the GSM page and allows you to switch between Auto, GSM and UMTS; half way down the page is a button called 'Connections'

When you tap that you find a page with your available Data connections listed in the top frame- MMS, WAP, Internet etc. with Enabled and Status markers. Currently available connections are Green in Enabled,, and currently connected connections show Green in Status. Tapping any of the Enabled bars, changes the colour to red, and then that connection won't be able to be activated. So, you could theoretically have MMS still enabled, but disable Internet and WAP to prevent unwanted data use.

Hi,

might be a noob'ish' question but, can you also just put the device into flight mode and just connect to wifi - which will stop it trying to connect to another service?.. or is the software you are saying above - basically doing this but in an easier fashion?

Thanks

Rich

Hi Rich- full flight mode will turn off WiFi as well, though you can of course just turn the phone part off. The problem with that is that you'd then also lose all voice call & SMS function.

So if you want to retain voice calls, but prevent data transfer, you need to find a way of limiting the GPRS/3G connections- you can do it by not allowing 'Save Passwords' in your data settings, so each data session would request a password, but with Activesync now trying to connect every 5 minutes, that could become intrusive. So, programs like Bandswitch or MoDaCo Nodata are easy ways to turn off just the data connections, but retain voice calls and SMS.
