Wild speculation time - when is the Nokia N82 coming to TMob?

As per the post title. Will TMob be getting the N82 and when? Its a possible on my list of new devices.

I'd LOVE to know too, as it's the only device that could upstage my Nokia N95 I currently use - thing is I'm one of the old school who prefer Candy-bar/Monoblock phones.

So the N95 is the ultimate uber-ideal "has it all" phone for me, with the exceptions of:

A decent battery life

A Xenon Flash

Monoblock Form Factor.

The N82 has the potential to therefore fix the only flaws with the N95 - albeit with a new flaw of it's own - the small key buttons with the labels on the phone, not the keys (a la the horrible S.E. K810i style).

Why can't Nokia get it 'just right' Ah well, it's as close as it gets for now.

So given that both my partner AND son, have been entitled to a T-Mobile upgrade for the last two months, the sooner the N82 arrives the better!

I take it you aren't regretting your flight from the Windows Mobile then? Thats the main thing that puts me off. I LOVE my Hermes, so much so that I will still continue to use it when I upgrade and although I quite fancy a Touch or an Ameo the N82 is in the mix as well.

Nah not in the slightest mate... though I still DAILY come on this and Modaco, as I use my MDA Universal as my sat-nav, and have a Vario and Vario II still.

It's just that "I" wasn't the right sort of person for Windows Mobile, or rather, Windows Mobile was not the right sort of 'system' for a person like me any more.

Back when I used to be a Councillor, the brilliant Diary/Sync capabilities of WM was a godsend to someone like me back then, slave to his agenda.

But I have to be fair and say I disliked most other aspects of WM - I was too much of a "leisure user". And for YEARS it was no secret how much I absolutely slated the Media and Sharing features of WM - for that read it's terrible poor ability of Bluetoothing images and videos to other people. In my early days of WM, this wasn't even POSSIBLE without something like a third party app like SmartExplorer I think it was.

Later, WM matured slightly, and allowed this direct from it's own File Manager, though on a hit and miss basis, in terms of finding the other phone, being really slow to find, when lots of phones are about, and identifying by unique device id rather than Bluetooth name, at first.

Coupled to this, of course, was the fact that this was done from a File Manager and a list of media, rather than a gallery, and being able to easily browse then send.

I also disliked the fact that MMS was a "third party" provided solution, not a native feature of the actual Microsoft OS itself.

Things like this, meant that my overall experience of WM was not a great one, carried out only because of the advanced Diary sync that I needed at the time.

Indeed, the best experience I managed was with an iMate SP5 - a WM SmartPhone, as opposed to a PDA type device such as I have now.

It was not as bad, but still not great. And as the latest phone version of WM is something like the S710, or s720, it means the feature set is still very old and dated.

So please understand, that I am not slating WM altogether. For the right person or SORT of person, it is ideal, and second to none.

But for me, especially after I stood down as a Councillor, and of course bearing in mind all the fights I had on the door as a Bouncer during this time where large pda like phones were not really practical for me, moving AWAY from WM back to Nokias has been an effortless move.

WM still has so very far to go to capture the lower end, none-techie market, and thus increase market penetration.

Cheaper prices on the devices help to a degree, but it's still no use when that person buys said cheap WM device and then is left thinking "well where's all the cutesy easy stuff like bt gallery sharing etc".

I KNOW that sounds sacrilege where WM is concerned, but let's be fair - this is the reason Nokias sell by the bucket load - specifically because this is the mainstream market, and thus greater market share.

Bear in mind that even with nokia, I still now have a smartphone device, with 3.5G, Wi-fi, Built in GPS, and loads of third party handy apps etc installed, and it's a no-brainer for me alas. Even my Nokia 6120c is a hell of a Smartphone, yet in a tiny size...

So the new N82 is a dream to come true for me!

Do you use the calendar function at all? Tasks? Both of these are essential to me, since I am woefully disorganised unless I have something beep at me 15 minutes before I am meant to be somewhere, and last time I used a Nokia (a loooonnnngggg time ago) the Data Suite was more broken than Activesync(!).

Interesting to note that you have given up on the N95 for your satnav. Am I right in thinking they have upgraded the hardware/software for this on the N82?

Hi again mate.

Right, here we go... PC Suite Outlook sync for Nokia phones has both pro's and con's over ActiveSync and a WM device.

The plus side to Nokia/PC Suite - you can CHOOSE the actual folders to use!!! I can't believe ActiveSync STILL does not let me choose which folder to use for Contacts, Calendar etc on the PC, and this was always a massive bugbear for me, as I did NOT want the default list of Windows (Email based) contacts, to form my Contact list on my SmartPhone when doing a Sync.

So I HATED with a vengeance, this major flaw in ActiveSync/WM.

On the other hand, a big plus that AS/WM has for it over PCS/Nokia, is that the process itself is more solid and reliable, and wide ranging - that is to say, even now, you cannot create a "logical/business repeat" on a Nokia device - a repeating entry that occurs on the same SORT of day each month, such as the "third Friday each month", "last Tuesday of every month" etc, as opposed to a dated repeat (26th of the month, 5th of each month) etc.

On a WM device, creating a "logical/business dated" repeat is easy.

A workaround i use for this however, is that whilst basic Series 40 Nokias (none-symbian, such as the 6300 etc), cannot handle these type of entires at all, Symbian nokias however, such as the N95, whilst not possible to create them on the device itself, CAN receive them FROM the PC when sync'ed - so you can CREATE "business days repeating entries" in Outlook, and then sync them to a Symbian Nokia and they work.

Most of the time *lol* - I say that because I have had a few hiccups of late, for no real reason why.

So something i am all too ready to agree with, is that Nokia and PC Suite is NOT as matured and reliable for Calendar use, as WM and AS is.

In terms of my Sat-Nav...

I use my MDA Pro (Universal) still, as it came with Co-Pilot.

And using this as opposed to my N95 means that I can have full custom POI's (which i have lots of), as well as multiple location routing - that is more than one destination.

My N95 does not allow for POI's, nor does it allow a LIST of destinations (via's) to be used.

But it is still a GREAT little tool, given that it is always with me. And due to the 3 day free trial, it was excellent when on holiday in Majorca this year, and I hired a car and visited Soller, and the Torrent de Pareis etc on the north of the island.

Coupled with Google Maps, with Satellite imagery, and my T-Mobile Data plan, it is a cracking device to avoid getting lost.

It's just not as full featured as a standalone sat-nav. Of course, the very program I use, Co-Pilot, is available for the N95, so that would certainly level the playing field somewhat.

Hope this helps, and feel free to chip in with anything further. Oh, additionally, as I am using the new v20 firmware recently released for the N95, I already have things such as Demand Paging of Ram, for more RAM, and DVFS for better battery life, as well as the latest build of Nokia Maps.

So a lot of it is already similar to what the N82 should have.
