Backup guide-Dosnt work with UK Update (canary v0.98)

*UPDATED*

*NOTE* PLEASE READ EVERYTHING ON HERE BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING

Backups dont work with the UK update their is a fairly complicated way round it, which i will write up soon, it involves using a terminal program to flash back the DK update bootloader!

:!: DISCLAIMER: I CANNOT BE HELD RESPOSIBLE IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO YOUR PHONE REMEMBER YOU ARE PLAYING WITH YOUR PHONES ROM, EXTRA TERRESTRIAL SPACE FREQUENCIES MIGHT PISS THIS UP! :!:

Ok now im assuming here you phone is switched on and nothing has been modified except maybe the cert unlock!

1- Find a spare memory card the process is different for each size of memory card. 8MB, 32MB, 64MB(max required but you can use anything bigger)!

2- Switch phone off and switch phone on with memory card of choice inserted, make sure you are holding down the voice record button.

3- The smartphone bootloader should kick in and say "Card Found"

4- Hold down the action button for one second as directed

5- Now you should be presented with various save options including

Save ALL, Save Bootloader, Save GSM, Save WinCE and Save IPSM and various other combinations of these.

6- Depending on the size of the memory card chosen you will be able to back up a minium of just the IPSM (for 8mb) to a complete backup for 32mb/64mb. NOTE: The ipsm contains the registry, all your settings, contacts, text messages, backgrounds, ringtones basically everything on the phone that is user selectable or has to be modified by the operating system, since this backs up the registry YES it will keep cert unlocked and off!

7- It takes sometime and may appear like its not doing anything but eventually you will be able to press keys this is the sign that it has finished, for some reason it dosnt say passed but you will know if its finished! The key here is you should be ok as long as it hasnt said FAILED which happens if it runs out of space, it shouldnt take any longer than a MAX of 20-30mins (for a full backup)

8- you now have a quality backup, press left twice goto end and holdpower button to reset the phone.

UPDATE: You can DEFINATELY use an 8mb card to backup IPSM, it has been confirmed below, finally a reason to dig it up ;)

TO RESTORE THE BACKUP

1- insert memory card containing the backup and switch on the phone holding the voice record button.

2- it will now ask you if you want to restore the backup, if you only want to restore PART of the backup (e.g. you made a full backup but only want to restore the IPSM) press the power button (to get rid of the normal restore menu) and then hold action key as instructed to get to diag menu.

3- their are now options to LOAD various parts of the backup so if you just want to load the ipsm back on press LOAD IPSM. NOTE: it says something strange like find file and click to save and it appears to have hung leave it it hasnt hung, eventually it will say P A S S E D.

Your backup should now be restored and all settings will now be INDENTICAL to when you made the backup. This process is especially useful when you do the update since you can save IPSM and then do the update, restore IPSM and all your settings will be kept exactly as if you hadnt even touched the phone.

Also a complete restore of the backup (if you did a complete backup) should get rid of the danish rom update too i havnt tried this but it seems pretty obvious.

NOTE: DO NOT F*CK/EDIT/JUMP ON THE BACKUP IT WILL DESTORY YOUR PHONE, THE SD CARD IS NOT READABLE BY SMARTPHONE WINDOWS SO TAKE IT OUT BEFORE IT LOADS OR IT WILL WANT TO FORMAT IT, WINDOWS 98/XP ETC CANNOT READ THIS SD CARD EATHIER IT CAN ONLY BE READ BY THE SMARTPHONE BOOTLOADER AND A WINDOWS HEX EDITOR (WHICH I ADVISE AGAINST). OH AND IF YOU DO BACKUP THE SD CARD TO A FILE (using a hex editor) YOU WONT BE ABLE TODO THIS THROUGH ACTIVESYNC ONLY AN SD CARD READER

 *NOTE TO PEOPLE INTENDING 8MB BACKUP* 8MB BACKUPS CAN BE A LITTLE BIT DODGY (NO IDEA WHY) TEST THE BACKUP BEFORE UPDATING:

1-Put something in your IPSM before doing the backup

2-Do the backup, then delete the thing you put in your IPSM

3-Restore the backup and it should come back(if it dosnt you dont have a good backup, otherwise you do!).

4-If you didnt get a good backup then try again but remove some stuff from your IPSM, and go through this continuous cycle.

NOTE: You *shouldnt* damage your IPSM so dont worry!

Nice one peeps,

Take it easy,

DJ Hope

PS if you do the danish rom update and then IPSM restore you will need two shortcut files for the new apps:

WindowsEzSound.exe for picture manager

WindowsEzPic.exe for sound manager

:!: PROBLEMS UPDATING(TO DANISH UPDATE) & RESTORING IPSM :!:

 ONLY FOR ENGLISH USERS, DANISH USERS CAN IGNORE!

Ok now using this method orange update/orange backup arnt working this is because something in IPSM is giving away our locale as UK and not DK.

Since the files used for orange update in the windows directory all have "orangedk" in them it will complain about not being able to find locale specific resources.

Got a new procedure for this thanks to shuflie copy the files below to IPSM/Windows before backing-up and updating then orange backup/update will always work.

Thanks to preconsitant/cent for the original info!

The files are:

AE_en.dll

AEB_orange_en.dll

AECommon.dll

AEL_orange_en.dll

AER_orange_en.dll

AERASManager11.dll

AEU_orange_en.dll

nice one thx for writing it up, now i can really try and stuff up my SPV safe in the knowledge I'll have used the SD card for something else when I come to restore ;)

Seriously, thanks for taking the time to post the guide - sticky soon hopefully.

Nice one DJ. Just one question - when I'm backing up IPSM it takes *ages* and nowt seems to happen, no passed/failed message. Then - if I press the action-button - it flips back to the load/save menu. Should I just leave it for ages? How long does it take (roughly) to back up IPSM? Anyone?

Thx.

Ahhh sorry whilst you are backing up takes bloody ages if you do a full backup it is writing 61mb otherwise it shouldnt take long, i think it says passed but im not 100% sure whilst you are backing up definately does for a restore.

A complete restore of the backup (if you did a complete backup) should get rid of the danish rom update too i havnt tried this but it seems pretty obvious.

I didn't make any backup of the IPSM, and now I can't get the uncert til work, because the smartphone 2002 screen disappears before my device connects to the computer. Could anybody send me their IPSM backup :?: That would really make my day.... doesn't matter if its english or danish.

Should fit a 8mb sd card, and of course it should be uncert.

Sorry dude its got my passwords n s*** you know everything otherwise i would get someone to send it to you who has just done a fresh hard reset with cert off. I noticed that activesync didnt connect straight away to uncert (after the update finished) but others swear blind it still works with the update, oh well good job i didnt need it, i rekon that "Restore IPSM" could be a workaround for cert that nobody will be able to fix!

Also id be a tiny bit wary of using someone elses IPSM according to the xda developers the latest version of the xda bootloader writes a machine specific checksum to each SD card to stop people trading roms etc, you might be ok with IPSM tho since its not rom! No idea!

Hmm trying to back up my ISPM here onto the original 8Mb card, I go through the instructions as above, select IPSM then get:

Save IPSM

Not a valid disk!!

Now format disk!!

Saving IPSM!!

it seems to just stay on this screen then, trying it now for the second time, first time i waited maybe 10-15 minutes then pressed a key which took me straight to the 3 color canary screen. Stupidly I left the card in whilst it booted to windows which then offered to reformat it for me, as I was thinking maybe it hadn't worked due to lack of space I let it format.

Just rebooted and tried to save again and its stuck on the Saving IPSM window, been maybe 10 minutes now... going to leave it a while longer.

Once backed up is there anyway to verify it has worked correctly ??

Yeh ok it seems like it dosnt say PASSED, oh well, just push a button if it does something i imagine that means its worked...i pretty damn sure it says FAILED if it dosnt work since people have run out of space doing a full backup and it definately says failed.

I rekon that means its worked then pure assumption tho, sorry! 15mins should definately do the trick!

I honestly cant remeber if it said passed or not DOH, but then i did a full backup and it does other stuff after IPSM so it definately finishes the IPSM backup.

Can anyone whose done this on an 8mb card comment?

How much space does a full backup take - I had a 32 Mb MMC, it allowed me to do full backup - is there enough space on the card for this or does it really take up 61Meg (In which case I will nuke the card an redo it as I dont want to restore half a backup and kill the phone) cheers

[Edit]

Gave up waiting, 30 minutes and still nothing to say it had finished.

Neil: 32mb might be ok if it didnt fail then you should be fine, the only reason why the backup file i made took up 61mb MIGHT be because it Zeroed the rest of the file so it had a complete image of the 64mb card (this was when i dumped the image in a hex editor).

I dont understand how it could take up 61mb since the internal memory is only 32mb so yes 32 should be fine, but i cant gurantee it!

er quick newbie question - will this process work with a 128mb memory card as the thread seems 2 imply 8/32/64MB are the only options

;) thnx for any help

well after back up i was gonna save all files on mempory card on my pc and then format the mmc card for use with the spv again and only restore the backup files when required - that should be fine shoulnt it? ;)

That should be ok, make sure that when you back it up to a file on your pc it dosnt do ANY modification to the file, or your phone will pay the price ;)

Did a IPSM save on the 8MB card installed the DK update

went to do the backup and on the load potion it said passed very quickly?

powered up the phone and nothing

Not a sign of my old settings ;) so I did it again and still nothing.

So I presume saving the ISPM did not work.

Any ideas or shall I just try to do the decertifiy thing again

and install all my apps from scratch

I've backed up IPSM onto an 8MB SD card (which I think only takes a couple of seconds ... but doesn't show PASSED when finished) and then I restored it back to the phone (to make sure it worked, which also took just a couple of seconds).

Then I took that SD card and placed it in another SPV and restored the IPSM on that SPV using the IPSM I'd backed up from the other phone ...and it worked fine with no problems. (although I was a bit worried about doing it at first just incase one phone f*cked up, but twas a happy ending) ;)

Now I just wish I had a bigger SD card so I could try to restore a full backup on another phone.

Backing up to the pc cant be done through activesync you MUST do it though an SD Card reader, since your only reading the card through windows smartphone when you use activesync and what did i say about that?

Asher mate if you try that make sure you have a backup for the SPV which you are trying this on first if you do try ;)

When you back up the IPSM or any other parts, you know it has backed up successfully if you can use the phone and it hasn't hung (so if it responds to button presses it ok). It took me ages to figure this one out. You'll know if it hasn't backed up cause it will say failed, but says nothing if successful.

For those of you worried about whether you have shagged your phone by taking out the SD card to early, don't worry if you have a full backup. Just restore all and start again, these phones are quite durable. First time round I didn't think my phone would ever work again, it's working better than ever and is de-cert now, but I did put it through it's paces.
