Guest Confucious
You don't say which country you are from so difficult to say.
Guest Samsonite
it might be that you're getting an MMS picture message rather than an SMS. MMS's use GPRS as the delivery method whereas an SMS comes down to the phone a different way. the ghost little G is a common issue with the S710. My E650 (Orange's version of the Vox) does this and i cant work it out either. Even going into the Comm Manager doesn't indicate an actual GPRS session active and therefore cant be cancelled in that way! if the little G bothers you, the only way is to actually initiate a GPRS session by using IE or something and THEN killing the session - madness i know but there you have it! as far as i can tell, the little G (ghost one, i mean) is not actually sending/receiving any traffic but the only science i have to back up that statement is the fact that there is no dit-ditdit-dit-ditdit bleeding thru to the speakers i have waved the phone at when the mysterious little G appears for no reason! beyond that, not a lot i could suggest! :(
Guest Fizz_daz
Ah Uk.. orange, E650... I know about MMS's it's doing it when I get a text message though.. soft reset restores things until I get another message..
Guest Confucious
Strange, have you tried turning your data connection off and seeing if you can still receive texts?
Guest paholman
I no longer have this phone, but seem to recall that you could change the SMS settings to use GPRS instead of the usual network standard. It may be in Start > Settings > connections > SMS or something similar, sorry I can't be precise Hope it helps
Guest Confucious
That was why I asked which country the OP was in - the SMS by GPRS is not supported by any UK operator I believe. But this can, of course, be tested by turning off the data connection and seeing if texts can still be sent / received.

It probably only happens in years ending 7 - you just wait, it'll start happening again in 2017! :(
Guest Samsonite
strange this.... not touched the phone but now it's ok when I recieve a text message... hmmm very odd.. seems to have cured itself??? dont be fooled!!! :( i reckon you have seen another incarnation of the ghost G bug... the fact it seemed to be linked to SMS's is a red herring imho... I tend to get the bug appear after i have actually used a GPRS session and then ended it with Comm Manager - if i on/off the phone it does seem to cure it until the next time GPRS is used and then it may (or may not) come back after that.
