Does your screen look like this?

We initially had two Shadow phones that were as normal as they could be... Then, we had to return those and order two new ones with a lower price tag. Unfortunately, the screen on one of them looked awful (you can check the pictures to see the difference). If you look at it from anything but 90 degrees, the colors and the text looked washed out.

I've seen number of Shadow phones to know that it was not normal. So I returned that, but the next one was the same. Today I received the replacement for the replacement and it is still the same. So, I decided to just return it and wait about a month or so before ordering it again with the hope that these are just coming from a bad batch.

I am suspecting that people who dont know what a Shadow screen should look like (i.e., like the one on the left) may think that these are just normal. When I e-mailed these photos to T-Mobile Customer Service, they immediately acknowledged the problem and took the phones no questions asked.

Does your screen look like the one on the left or the right?

Actually 4 in a row. They made a mistake and sent a Copper instead of Sage one time. The other three were Sage. All with a crappy screen!!!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that 2 of the phones had a problem with how the screen was sealed as well. The light was "leaking" from the camera button. Makes you wonder about the quality control at HTC and/or T-Mobile.

Wow, interesting info. I always felt mine was a pain to see unless looking at it straight ahead. Straight ahead it has a nice, sharp, bright display. But when you angle it a bit it is hard to see. Looking from bottom up it is washed out. Looking from top down it is very dark. Do you think I have a bad one?

Looking at your pictures and reading your description, yours looks more like the one I have on the right in the pictures. I know it is easy to "think" that this is normal, until you put it next to another one that has a normal display. When did you get yours?

Mine arrived mid December. There is a T-Mobile store a mile from me. I'll see if they have any working demos in there to compare it to. When I put on sunglasses it is impossible to read my screen. Maybe I have a dud and didn't even know it?

I just got a Shadow on Friday and it suffers the same problems with the screen. It's washed out and over-bright when looking at it at any angle but stright on. I thought it was annoying but perhaps this is a defect. My old MDA is a little washed out at an angle but not this bad.

It sounds like this problem is pretty widespread. I will probably take it back to the store, but I wonder what the chances are for getting one with a good screen?

I am sorry to hear that your phone has the same problem. I am just waiting for them to receive and process my return and cancel my 2-year contract. I actually asked them whether I could return or just buy one at a store, since it is easier to return it if there is a problem. They said that if the phone was ordered through Customer Care, then store was not an option. They operate somewhat independently.

Down the road, I will sing up again at a T-Mobile store. I will open the box right there in the store and check the screen. If it is defective, I'll try another one, then another one...... until I found a good one -or until the manager kicks me out of the store :)

I'm with you on that. I had a bad experience returning a phone to customer care once (not a shadow - it was awhile back). Going to the store is so much easier! And you can see what you are getting (imagine that)!

Today I stopped by the T-Mobile store and looked at some Shadow phones. There used to be two Shadows that had a "normal" screen. They were replaced with two new ones, and both had the "bad" screen. Even the display units are all washed out now :)

If HTC indeed switched its LCD source, then finding one with a "good" screen is going to be even more difficult.

The price went down again to $90 and I ordered two more phones. Let's see how the screens are on those (keeping fingers crossed).

Has anyone received a Shadow phone recently with a good or bad screen? I hope that "bad batch" is over by now...

Don't get your hopes up. I think this is the way it is now. The screens aren't bad, that's just how they are now. I took mine back to the store and they guy there said that's how they all look. He had never seen one different. He even pulled out his own which he had for awhile now and it was the same way.

At the $100 I paid for it, it's not bad. It's only bad at a severe angle, and I can just tilt the phone. Had I paid twice this I might be upset but I think it's OK.

FINALLY!

I received two new Shadow phones today and both of them have the "good" screen! After going through 6 phones, it was about time to get a good one :) I hope that it was just a bad batch, so that nobody has to live with that awful screen. Now we have 3 good-looking Shadow phones at home :D
