Shadow Update - Mystery of the Edge icon

Since there are several different discussions going on, I thought I'd put one up specifically for the one that's bothering me. What the heck happened to the "E" Edge icon? It appears when the phone is accessing the Edge network for internet access. Otherwise... MIA. For some time I thought that the Edge coverage in Chicago had dropped. But that doesn't make sense, 'cause little icon appears. Some people have reported that the icon came back after 30 mins or so. Mine has been left overnight, and it's still the same.

Can we have some theories on what happened, and how to solve this? I can't imagine that this is a design issue... Does T-Mobile really not want us to know that they have a slower Edge network, while everyone else is going 3G? :)

EDIT:

Just got this from Allshadow.com. Check out this link which explains some of the new changes, including the Edge icon being removed. That's weird why they would decide to take it out. And even more weird that some users see it coming back. Now I feel frightened for them - did their update go as planned? :D

I use a Registry hack to force my Data Connections to stay 'ON' All the Time, so I always see the [E] on my shadow.

I of course had to reapply the hack after the update.

Yes. But is it the "E" in the middle of the icon bar, or by the battery bar? The hack enables an always-on GPRS connection, and I suspect you are seeing the "E" constantly by the battery bar. Right?

The larger 'E', which means that EDGE is available whether you're currently connected with it or not, is the one they removed. The little 'E' that is combined with the signal bars is what remains now, showing just when you're EDGE-connected.

The little 'E' next to the signal bars shows all day on my phone even when I'm not connected to EDGE. My comm manager shows no data connection but the 'E' is still visable. I hope this is not an issue.

Ahh, yes, you are correct. I didn't even remember the Large [E] in the middle. Sorry for the confusion.

Isn't that weird how some people are getting it, and some people aren't? In the back of my mind, I have the feeling that this is what happens when you don't completely clean out the old OS, but install something on top of it. In my previous WM6 custom ROM testing, we ALWAYS used to say that for making sure that no weird things happen, do a "format BINFS" with Tera Term. We had seen that sometimes some files get left over in the space not taken up by the new ROM, and can cause problems. That's one theory of what could be happening here. The ROM upgrade process (I believe) does not format the device, and merely installs over the current OS. That may result in different behaviours for different people depending on what was installed on their phones.

Worth about $0.02.

I was hoping that removal of the E would allow room for other notifications such as yahoo messenger or even the P when you have a new message from palringo. I guess I was hoping for too much. :)

Ask Rinku if he can add it to his iconbar.

Hey guys,

I'm new to the site and I’ve actually only had my Shadow for two days. I upgraded and like most of you the big E went away.

Which actually is fine by me. However the little E seems to stay on after accessing data etc.. the only way I can seem to get it

to go away is to go to connections and manually turn off data transmission. So basically I'm wondering is this thing supposed to be on at all times (perhaps meaning EDGE is available?) I don't really care about it being on but it seems like the battery would drain faster with it on. Again I'm new to the Shadow so sorry for the long question.

It may stay on because the application that was accessing the connection is not closed, you have to manually close applications from the task manager.
