UK Data contract - best deal

What's the best deal for 3G data in the UK these days - I have Tmobile WnW basic, which costs me £7-50 a month. Anything better on offer than that, or is it still the best game in town? My contract is up and I have to decide whether to renew, haggle etc.

I've not found anything cheaper,, I'll have to have a look at the 3 tariff Jimbouk points out.

I've got a sim only deal with WnW basic, so that's £15/month (7.50 for phone inc 50mins + 7.50 for WnW), but no text (which isn't a biggy for me).

I actually sent a message to T-Mo CS earlier to see about moving up to WnW plus and see if I can get the hotspot access.

I think 3 are doing an unlimited data deal for £5

That's only on your phone though. If you use it as a modem for your pc then the £5 data is not for you (I think it is £10 for 1G and £15 for 3G). Having said that £5 unlimited on HSPDA is sooooooooo cool :D

Look at this - £5 extra a month (granted data is £5 on top of that) but look at all those minutes / texts. (1100 any time any net) Hurry!! Don't forget quidco (£80 back) and refer a friend (£30 back). Free phone (probably poor) which you can flog for a few quid.

O2 have a £7.50 unlimited bolt on as well now. No connecting it to your laptop, no P2P or VOIP allowed though (same as the standard WnW) i believe. I was only looking as I can't decide between the £180 T-Mob want as an upgrade to the Vario III or moving to O2 and going for the very nice looking Orbit 2 which I could get for £90 on a similar contract. Totally torn between the two ..

£7.50 isn't £5 though is it?? :D TBH after years of chasing upgrades (free or early) I have gone to SIM free (MWg Atom) and it allows me to go for the best contract for minutes/data. I paid £200 for it - the Kaiser II was £149 on contract! So a bit more but I can choose the contract I want not the deal that they are trying to give me :(

That's fine if you don't mind 120kbs download speeds/

And Three is fine if you're in their coverage - do you still get GPRS data when you go out of Three's coverage? If so, it's a good deal.

I still prefer my £20.52 / month for Flext35 + W'n'W Plus though....

Yep sure do both on O2 and Orange (my phone tells me the network I am on).

O2 are completely out for me - no reception. Quite interested by 3 - what is their service like these days? What restrictions do they put on the "unlimited" 1GB internet - can I get away with using it for modem access for example? I mean "get away with" as I do with WnW basic! And is it HSDPA?

3 will do £15/m for 300 mins/txts on a 6 month contract at the moment, so £20 including the net access. Otherwise you have to commit to 18 months which I don't want, my plan is to try and avoid too much commitment, keep usint the TyTn until something better gets cheaper or the Xperia comes out. Wonder if 3 will do the internet on PAYG, I don't actually make a lot of calls.

If the 18 months was not such a bummer, it would work out at £450 in all, minus £80 quidco and ebay an N73 for say another £80, which comes to about £16 a month. Not bad I guess. Decisions... just wary of 3 given their past rep.

Haven't T offered you vast amounts off your contract if you stay with them?

I got £15/month off which means I only pay just over £20 for W'n'W plus and Flext35

They've offered me £10 off, but I already had £5 off from the original offer, I'm waiting for them to get back to me about whether they stack. If they do it would be about £13 a month for WnW+Flex35 and I think I'd buy that for a 12 month contract.

They do stack - my £15 off was off the net amount as I already had 25% discount. (£35+£12.50)*75%-£15 is what I now pay.

As Confucious says, the O2 data tariff is limited to 120Kbps so completely useless if your handset is HSDPA enabled. I just dumped O2 after a week (I think that constitutes a record!) and am going back to T-Mobile. There's nothing else out there that comes even close to Web n Walk :D

Not in my case. Just got off the phone, best they would offer is to sign up for another 18m at 17.50 for flex20+WnW. If I do nothing it'll go up to 27.50 because the fiver off runs out with the original 18m contract expiry. Doesn't seem that good to me.

So: it looks like Tmob and 3 are the only ones worth considering. Tempted by the 6month @£20 offer at 3, give them a go and see how it pans out. Are you sure their sim's work in this handset?

Ah! my 25% off was for as long as I stay with them - wasn't the £5 off deal?

There are threads on 3 SIMs in WM handsets and they do work - but getting 3's content can be a prob - if you don't want that it shouldn't be a problem.

Very hard to search for anyhthing to do with 3!

Don't care about 3s content, I just want an internet connection for web and email. If it can do that I'm happy.

Only slight worry is what happens if you use data (3G or not) outside of 3's coverage. Read somewhere it can be considered as roaming and charged for.

meh, now they're saying the discounts do stack, so it'll be 12.50 for 18 months for Flext20 and WnW basic. Can't do better than that I reckon.

(but for information folks, the PAYG on 3 allows you to do the £5 a month internet add on)

The £5/mth from 3 also covers you for data roaming in Austria and Italy. Not sure if advertised, but was soooooo pleased when discovered it.

I've just had a look at the SIM only PAYG and the internet add on is £2.50 a week. Is there a £5 option?

Yeah, I couldn't find it on the site, but spoke to a callcentre guy who assured me it's there when you log into My3 ( I couldn't try this of course). Downside is you have to redo it every month, there's no way to make it automatic. It's a very good deal though, I'd be jumping on it if Tmob hadn't come through.

OK - I got a letter saying I'd signed up for another 18 months when the website said only 12 so I rang them up. They then told me that the discounts DON'T stack and I'd only be geting £10 off the Flext20 for another 18 months.

I have now cancelled that contract and gone for a Virgin SIM only for £10/month I get 300 mins and 300 texts which is more than enough for the other half.

Disappointed with T though - first time I've been disappointed with them since I joined them. Still happy with my main contract though.

What if I need to use Mobile Broadband outside the Turbo coverage?

· You will experience our fastest speeds when using Mobile Broadband in areas where we have Turbo coverage.

· However, outside of these areas our 3G network still provides good speeds for internet browsing across 90% of the UK.

Check our coverage map here for details of coverage in your area, and plans for improving speed in the future.

Please note: Although you can use Mobile Broadband in the UK when you roam onto 2G, the speeds are much slower.

The 3rd guy I spoke to found out they didn't stack after all but he could offer me and extra £3 off, making it £14.50/m for Flext20 and WnW basic. I'd found that 3 didn't have reception in my house so it seemed like the only option and I signed up. Am not entirely happy with an 18 month contract, but they have given good service, and it's pretty cheap.
