Guest Jefgorbach
I began with an Hp545 and later upgraded to an Ipaq-6515 for the integrated internet/phone, which Im considering updating again between now and July when my ATT contract renews. However hit a stumbling block - there seems to be TWO versions of WM6 now: Standard and Professional. MSFT's Windows Mobile site doesnt mention/compare the two, however other sources imply the only(?) difference is the MSFT apps included in the Standard version on smartphones like the BlackjackII can only EDIT existing excel/word files, not create NEW ones on-the-fly. True? Are there other gotchas?
Guest gmatharu12
I believe, WM6 Standard refers to the Windows Mobile smartphones with NO Touch screen. Programs are usually available for both. WM6 Professional are the mobiles with a touch screen. As for the editing of files, I am sure you can always download and buy 3rd party tools to do what you require.
Guest Confucious
gmatharu12 is correct - there used to be SmartPhone and PPC versions, now it's standard and Pro so it just depends on if you want a SmartPhone or PPC.

Thats why Im researching the differences. Obviously smartphones/WM6-Standard have smaller non-touch screens but otherwise seemed the "same" as their larger PDA/WM6-Professional Brothern ... until I discovered the WM-Standard excel/word intentional "defect", making me wonder what (if any) other differences exist before I discover my intended upgrade isnt. HP's site implies their PDAs no longer have embedded phones (like my Ipaq Hw6515 does) so Im leaning towards a Blackjack2 but would love suggestions/reccommendations. Thanks. Guest Confucious
Homescreens are different on Std from Pro and a lot more customisable. They come with profiles to switch between vibrate, ring, silent etc which pro doesn't but pro has some advantages syncing outlook email folders - it came up in a q recently, I explained how to do something and someone and someone else pointed out that you couldn't do it on Std as the feature didn't exist but I've forgotten the details. AFAIK they are the only differences s/ware wise - and the fact that the std version doesn't have s/ware keyboards of course! Some software is specific as well so if you have s/ware for a pro (touchscreen) version it might not work on a std version and you might have to pay to 'upgrade'. I have had varying success - some s/ware works on both, some there is a different version but if you have a licence it works on both, others you have to pay again. It's best to check before you make a decision if you have amy s/ware you particularly need. Good luck!

True? Are there other gotchas? Just tried on my BJ2 and I can't seem to create new Word/Excel docs cause I haven't tried that before. Maybe I just might keep a blank word and excel document on the phone and then I can open it and start using it to create one.

Have you got the latest version of Office Mobile? (6.1 I believe)
