According to Orange - who kindly remove the Live Messenger application from the TyTN II ROM with their crappy customisations - you can now get a free trial until June 2008 of their 'Orange Messenger' application: after June however, you have to pay for the messages you want to send and receive.

Now, I know from my old SPV M3100 (the original TyTN) that - with a generic ROM that includes Messenger - you can send and receive messages at no cost at all (bar your network connection that is) - so what gives Orange the right to charge for something that should be not only already on the phone when you get it, but should also be free to use too?

...I will eventually install a new ROM to my phone since Orange fill theirs with bloatware - however, can anyone recommend a good IM client that works with Windows Messenger and is also free? Damned if Orange are getting any more of my money for something that shouldn't cost... :D

5p for a message? :o £1 a day or £4 a month??? :( I think the phrase " 'aving a larf " applies here. Come now Orange, do you seriously expect people to pay for this?

You could just download it from Microsoft at http://messengergonemobile.com/ .....

No, you can't. the windows mobile section of that site just says "if you can't find Messenger in your programs folder you can still use it in Internet Explorer.

So no go, I'm afraid :D

Me: *LAUGHS* You're a pistol, you're really funny. You're really funny.

Orange: What do you mean I'm funny?

Me: It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy.*LAUGHS*

Orange: what do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?

Me: It's just, you know. You're just funny, it's... funny, the way you tell the story and everything.

Orange: [it becomes quiet] Funny how? What's funny about it?

Random Other: Orange no, You got it all wrong.

Orange: Oh, oh. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did ya say? Funny how?

Me: Jus...

Orange: What?

Me: Just... ya know... you're funny.

Orange: You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little ****** up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to ****** amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

Me: Just... you know, how you tell the story, what?

Orange: No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the **** am I funny, what the **** is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!

Me: [long pause] Get the **** out of here, Orange!

Orange: [everyone laughs] Ya ***********! I almost had him, I almost had him. Ya stuttering ***** ya. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes. You may fold under questioning.

I think that about sums it up.

Chances are that you will find that downloading the messenger app., or a full rom, won't do you any good. Messenger uses a specific port(s) to sent and receive on so O can either block or monitor the port and you'll either not be able to use it or they'll charge you anyway.

Oh dear. Orange just don't get it do they? Their business plan of getting people to use dozens of individual pay-per-use applications is flawed.

Blimey, if Orange honestly believe this will take off, they're even more stupid than Bottler Brown and his gang of thieving scumbags.

Mainly because people wont!!

T-Mobile will be waiting with open arms now, just as they were when Flext and WnW first came out (which is when I made the jump).

...Christ, just saw an ad for this in my MSN window. They're making it look like it was something brand new and never done before.

We really should try and spread the word about the free alternatives so people aren't ripped off.

I'll stick with my Tesco payg and wifi for now me thinks.

Orange are seriously losing the plot, such a shame when they were one of the main inovators of the Smartphone five and a half years ago.

Orange totally lost it when they ceased to become hutchinson. Their "Our network will never be overloaded or busy" went out the window. Customer service calls were prioritised depending upon which tariff you were on.

Every day they do something that makes me glad that I switched to T-Mo.

Although I was abusing orange for a good few years with one handset matching the Virgin tariff on OVP! hehehe

I've tried all the other providers too, Voda were ok with customer service, but just couldnt match the package that T-mo offered. 02 ... imho pretty close to Orange ... terrible customer service. T-Mo's customer service is the best I have seen for a long time, and will happily pay a couple of quid more for that.

Orange were the company that really started the SmartPhone revolution and supported MoDaCo with the summer events et al. I still have my MoDaCo C600 as a spare phone. It is a shame they went downhill so quickly.

T have ruled the roost with their excellent data prices coupled with great CS and good network but is that going to change now Voda are bundling 500Mb with all contracts (at effectively £5/month whether you want it or not!) - competition is hotting up! So what do Orange do? Start charging for messenger - great response guys :D

Exactly, Orange were kings once, The E200 and C500 were what got me into the whole smartphone scene.
