Hello,

I am old and new to this technology;-) I would like to learn to develop simple applications for my mobile phone. Can any one suggest me how to go about it? Are there any tutorials on this forum which provide a step by step explanation about technologies and coding involved? I remember seeing something like that from Paul MVP but can not trace it now.

I have determination but need guidence. Appriciate your help!

Thanks in advance.

If you want to start developing I would suggest you look at C#. If you have any programming experience the transition isn't very hard at all, and there are loads of samples that you can use. There's a lot less in the way of samples for VB, but the languages are similar so (with a bit of work) you could achieve the same thing in VB.

AFAIK there are no samples on Modaco, but if you Google for "c# windows mobile code sample" you should find plenty. There are loads on Microsoft's site in particular

Here are some to get you started:

Quick way to access Pocket Outlook in your applications

Various samples from Microsoft

Thanks for your suggestion. Also, any suggestions regarding flash for interface design prototyping purposes??

Do you mean Adobe/Macromedia Flash?

I wouldn't suggest it - AFAIK there's no Flash support in WM (perhaps in some browsers, dont know) so it wouldn't be realistic

The developer tutorial was one of my plans that hasn't quite made it to reality yet.

I'd still love to do it, but the lack of a free development environment for WM is a real bummer :D

There are no "good" tutorials for writing Pocket PC applications. Sorry, I've looked, Microsoft has quite a few tutorials but none are really considered good for the beginner. I started writing software for the Smartphone a while back and found it hard to gind a good starting place.

The biggest hurdle to writing software for the Mobile platform, and a hurdle to most, is the requirement that you have the professional version of Visual Studio. That one thing keeps all the people from developing things for fun.

YES! And i've beat on MS about this SO much! In 2005 it was at least standard version, but now they've RAISED the cost of entry.

If makes me so angry that mobile development isn't included in 'Express'!
