HTC TyTN II - Can it be used as a modem for Unlimited Internet 3G on Orange?

Hi there,

I'm thinking about upgrading my Orange phone to a new plan were apparently i have access to unlimited internet through the phone. I believe its a dolphin 35 or something along those lines with 600 minutes and again "unlimited texts".

I often carry around a laptop for work, and i'm not always in an area which allows free wi-fi access, but i need an internet connection on an almost daily basis. Although i won't be using the internet for downloading movies or p2p, many of the text documents and pdf files which i need to view can be a few mg at a time.

I discussed this when i first went into my local Orange shop. The sales assistant believed the best phone in my situation would be the HTC TyTN II. He stated that i should use this to connect to the internet via 3g as a modem with my laptop. However they didn't have the phone in stock. When going to a different Orange shop their sales assistant stated that he believed there was some kind of fair usuage policy - but when we looked through the t&c's, there didn't seem to be any such limit stipulated. He also stated that the phone can't be used as a modem for the internet browsing as its against their T&C's (which it is :D ).

My question is whether how can Orange find out i'm using the phone as a modem - is it easy to do? And whether i'll be charged for using the internet in this process, or will they first notify and at worst disconnect my internet connection. Further does anyone know of limit for "fair" usuage, and roughly how long in internet surfing time this will equate to.

I would buy one of those USB internet gizmo's, but thats an extra £15 per month, and if i get so called unlimited internet access, id rather save the money!

Sorry for all the questions. Thanx for your time

Cheers

-Steve

Whilst it is possible for them to work out what you are doing from the type of traffic, they don't currently monitor it but that doesnt mean they wont start.

I "occasionally" tethered my laptop to my tytn2 and Orange never batted an eyelid.

(Apparently the "unlimited" is 500mb per month but some orange staff are telling people its 250mb... but they have proved to me over the last week, they simply dont have a clue)

Thank you jimbouk for your reply.

Another question though, when you reach this so called unlimited data limit, where it be 250mg or 500 mg, do they just cut you off for that month, or will they charge for any excess use? Else i could be in the situation of racking up a pretty hefty phone bill.

Further I may be using the internet daily, would it be worth instead just to forget the included data package and try to connect to wifi hotspots using my laptop and instead get the N82 (easier to fit in your pocket as opposed to the HTC!) - many of the word documents may be upto 6 mgs+ and i'll be viewing a few daily, along with other various websites.

Cheers

They would not cut you off as going over your allowance could mean a nice little earner for the network.

I would think that if they did monitor it they would charge for the extra MB used (normally at a high rate), it's all down to the "fair usage" policy.

From what I understand Tmobile just throttle your bandwidth, but as I do not use data i can not say from personal use.

If you have a wifi hotspot available and depending on the charges (if any), it may be more cost effective but you would need to check your figures first.
