Disabling Data when Roaming and MicroSD Class Q.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if it's possible to disable data being activated when roaming, as in Australia, there are huge charges if outside 3's network?

Also, will a Class 2 microsd card be sufficient for the touch hd?

Cheers,

Stas

Hi Stazi,

There is indeed an App for disabling data connections. It can be found here, and also listed with several other useful programs in the Wot? No "Paul's must have FREE Touch HD software" yet? thread.

Regarding the microSD card, I'd recommend a minimum of class 4. Most SKUs come bundled with a Sandisk 8GB card which I believe is class 4 and I'm guessing HTC supplied the class 4 over a 2 because of the transfer rates needed for music and video.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Thanks for the help.

Would that utility allow you to ONLY disable if roaming. If on the 3G network, I get inexpensive rates - it's just that I don't want to manually switch the data on/off whenever I move between zones.

The problem with the microsd class is that I want to use the phone as an mp3 player. Having an 8gb card is tiny for my needs, but the 16gb microsd cards only come in class 2 at this stage

Haven't tried the app as I won't be going abroad anytime soon. but i'm guessing its pnly a toggle to switch data on and off. Don't know if there are any that work automaticallybased on cell connection or GPS.

Regarding the SD card, a class 2 should be fine for music, but ypu might have lag issues with high bitrate music or video.

phonealarm is a very fully featured application that can change profiles/settings based on location and cell towers (even gps now too). I'm sure this could be configured to turn off data under certain circumstances (ie roaming off own network), though only really use it to automatically turn my phone to silent when I'm near work.

it is not free, but (aside from the obligatory modaco plus membership!) is the best money I've ever spent on my phone.

hope you find this helpful.

I forgot to menstion there's the SD TuneUP app listed in the Wot? No "Paul's must have FREE Touch HD software" yet? thread, developed to counter the poor OOTB performance of the SD card slot.

It claims to improve performance by upto 3 times, but having only started using my SD card after installing it, I can't give a 'before n after' opinion. Also it might not be needed if your ROM is 1.19 or newer.

I bought a UK Spec unlocked HTC HD, card supplied from HTC is a Sandisk Class 2 and it does struggle (especially the photo album, 5MP pictures takes around 10 seconds to load), Toshiba are launching a 16gb Class 6 card in Jan 2009 (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/11/30/t...onsumer-market/)

So the question is should I live with my laggy phone for 1 more month and get a 16gb card (£unknown), or just go and buy an 8GB class 6 card from Sandisk now (£20)?
